Doctor: "Hey daughter, this is what's called an open heart surgery. Here's a scalpel and some surgical equipment. I know you don't have much training in this kind of thing, but I'm gonna leave you to it. Good luck, I'm gonna go take a break."

She's got the tickets to do the job, you get the experience from doing the job. Communication was what went tits up there. She said it herself, she didn't know what the signals meant, and now she does. That's called experience and no fucker I've ever worked with was born knowing exactly what to do in every situation they've found themselves in.

@@keithpringle3940 You're right. They aren't. Which is why it's best that the experience you do get is under good leadership and when you do gain it, it's done safely, supervised and there is someone there who knows when a person is 100% ready to take on a job/position which literally is responsible and in control of the lives of others. You know, so people don't die at the expense of "Whoops, now you know." She needed experience yes, but it was a bad call to just leave her there by herself. He fucked up. Period.

When a captain leaves the wheel house they are walking away from their responsibility. Sometimes this is ok like steaming and letting crew take "watches" so everyone can sleep. When working a boat he should have never left the wheel house with the boat under someone else's control. I am a father too and guilty of chucking my daughter in the deep end for her to build confidence, but he should have stayed in the wheel house and watched over her shoulder. This could of been a lot worse, also the crew arent stupid, they could/should of gone to the opposite side of where they were dropping and waited for a snap(they all knew it was coming) Glad everyone's ok and it's good viewing

Been checking her operate, she will get the hang of it. That was a fluke thing and luckily no one was hurt, and she actually got to see how it can go horribly wrong. She will always revert to neutral on the throttle controls when she he hears that tapping from the crew. Best thing, is she was not overtly defensive when Sig was explaining the issue to her. As a captain she has to be paying closer attention to every detail, and should have noticed that. But the video title and the narration don't really paint an accurate picture. The guys on deck are the ones that actually caused the dangerous situation because they allowed the buoy line to get caught up in the hook. She should have noticed it happen, but realistically all she could have done at that point was try to slow down. There is very little possibility that that would have actually prevented the hook from snapping back. A ship like that doesn't just stop.

@@Highplainsdrifter44 It should be even easier for a seasoned captain on an Alaskan crab boat with a green trainee at the helm. This is all on Sig and no one else. He was yelling with his hands around his mouth. A radio or hardwired intercom is would be better. His command was "slow down" when it should have been "neutral" and "hard right rudder". I don't know how long his daughter has been "training" at the helm, but it was immediately clear that she wasn't ready to go solo. That's more dad's fault than anyone else's. It looked like Sig went about it the right way though, by turning it into a learning moment. Fortunately nobody got hurt!! Hopefully she'll get there soon if that's what she wants to do.

(Edit) I also want to point out I absolutely love how Sig is even after a possibly life altering event happen, he just wants to get the point across so it doesn't happen again, and hell even says he shoulda turned on something as well, He wants nothing more then the safety of his crew and the prevention of further incidents. Older Sig has a leveled head even with the waves banging him around.

Perhaps not, but it remains a fact. Almost any dangerous situation is improved by immediately taking the boat out of gear (m.o.b/collision/wave/etc)
@cplcabs
@cplcabs 4 жыл бұрын
@@samueladams5243 agreed, but we have seen that taking the power off and even reversing has little immediate effect. In this case it seems everyone is trying to lay the blame of their mistakes on the lass because she didn't immediately take the power off. In addition, the lads on deck knew that she was in charge and knew she was inexperienced and as such should have been more vigilant, instead they got sloppy and that is why it happened in the first place.
@extractedentertainment8213

@@cplcabs Completely irrelevant. "To be fair"? This isn't a trial. Graham is 100% correct, I spent 9 years in the USCG, you always take the boat out of gear when you are unsure of what's going on, period end of story. They damn sure trained us that way. And for what it's worth, this should be common sense, for commercial or recreational vessels.
@cplcabs
@cplcabs 4 жыл бұрын
@@extractedentertainment8213 No shit sherlock? Where did I state taking the boat out of gear was the wrong thing to do? (additional actions could also have been done). So in all your years in the USCG, are you telling me that the instant you took a boat that size (or any size really) that the boat would have instantly come to a stop which would have definitely prevented this incident from occuring?

Gender is irrelevant here, a proper apprenticeship should involve all aspects of every role and should be trained on every discipline until competent and knowledgeable. A maritime graduate doesn’t know shit, it’s all theoretical analysis which serves little purpose when you spend your first season in the drink. She wasn’t ready, still didn’t understand her faults and will lose the confidence of her future crew. Poor decision by Sig to leave her unattended, but blind faith in a loved one is hard to get past

In a business as dangerous as this one, I could never be okay with putting my life, as well as my co-workers lives in the hands of a young girl, out on the ocean where people die all of the time due to bad judgement or mistakes. It does not matter how hard her dad tries to train her. It is a whole different story when you are out on the ocean on your own and have to make the big decisions without the boss there to ensure they are the right decisions. She seems like a decent, level headed girl. Maybe she will be okay with good training but I wouldn't wanna be on that crew during her first year of trial and error because errors on the ocean are not forgiving.
