@@StaxReacts all those harmonies in the background were ONLY Karen and Richard Carpenter. THey dubbed their voices in different octaves/inflections. The other men in the background was their touring and LIVE on stage band and only then did they sing backup. ALL the recorded versions of their songs on their albums, like this song was Karen and Richard Carpenter. This song also reached #2 on the charts in 1970 and Karen Carpenter was only 20 years old with a voice for the ages... This song followed closely behind their number 1 hit that same year "Close to You"... And yes, this song, "we've only just begun" for decades now as been a Wedding classic staple...

The smile on her face as she played drums was all you needed to see to know she was a DRUMMER who also sang. Rolling Stone ranked her above Bonham... Another top notch drummer was asked, "What's it like to be the best drummer in the world?" "You'll have to ask Karen that," he answered.

You just listened to the legendary Carpenters. As I and many others were into psychedelic rock in the 70's this brother and sister duo tore up the music world with 3#1's and 5 #2's on the billboard 100. Adult Contemporary charts they had 15 #1's which is astounding and have sold over 150,000,000 million records and still counting. Karen Carpenter was just voted best female voice on sirius/xm 70's on 7 and is considered the best female drummer by many in the music business. She is a legend and never to be forgotten. Next song "Top Of The World". Great Reaction.

Nice reaction sir. You nailed it. This was known as the " Wedding Song " when I was young. Many couples got married to this tune. It was originally written by Paul Williams as a jingle for a bank advertisement. Karen's brother Richard, a musical genius, heard it and turned it into a hit. Their song " Close To You " was also a big hit, and a must play at every high school dance. Glad you found and appreciate Carpenters music. Delve deeper. I'm sure you'll be glad you did. They blessed us with some wonderful and timeless music. Try " Superstar ". Luther Vandross did a cover of that song. Two of my favorites are " This Masquerade " and " A Song For You ". All three songs written by the late and great Leon Russell. Rest in peace Karen and Leon!

They were great. I've always loved the Carpenters. Karen died of heart failure due to anorexia at age 32. She was pressured into losing weight, and it evolved into a psychological disorder for her. But she really was one of the most talented musicians and singers that ever lived. Her voice was like buttah! 💛

To think this song started out life as a Bank commercial, lol. Richard Carpenter heard the song one day on tv, and recognized the musical composition and thought it sounded familiar. It turned out he was correct about who wrote the song and was able to contact him and ask if there was more to the song. And if he could fine tune the piece. I'll see if I can find the clip, maybe....?

The song was originally in a wedding-themed television commercial for Crocker National Bank in California in early 1970, with Paul Williams on vocals. Hal Riney of the San Francisco-based advertising agency Hal Riney & Partners had commissioned the song to help Crocker appeal to young people. The song played over footage of a couple getting married and just starting out. In the song, direct reference to the bank was left out, in part to make the song more marketable. The commercial turned out to be very popular, but it attracted customers in which the bank was not interested: young adult customers with no collateral for loans. The campaign was eventually suspended, and Crocker subsequently franchised it to other banks. As a single, the full song was first recorded by Smokey Roberds, a friend of Nichols, singing under the name "Freddie Allen". It was released in March 1970 but did not get significant airplay. Separately, Richard Carpenter saw the TV commercial and guessed correctly that Williams was the vocalist (both of them were under contract to A&M Records). Carpenter ran into Williams on the record company's lot and asked whether a full-length version was available. Although the TV commercial had only two verses and no bridge, Williams stated that there was a bridge and an additional verse, forming a complete song, which was then delivered. According to Williams in the documentary Close to You: Remembering The Carpenters "We'd had some success with songs before, a few album cuts and some B-sides - but no singles. This was a major break, a chance to get an A-side and maybe even a hit, so we would have absolutely lied through our teeth if there wasn't a full song." Carpenter selected the composition for the duo's third single and included it on the LP Close to You. Released in late summer 1970, the single featured Karen's lead vocals and the overdubbed harmonies of both siblings. Following their hit "(They Long to Be) Close to You" onto the charts, "We've Only Just Begun" hit No. 1 on the Cash Box singles chart and No. 2 on the U.S.Billboard Hot 100 behind the Jackson 5's "I'll Be There" and the Partridge Family's "I Think I Love You", becoming the pair's second million-selling gold single, spending nine weeks in the Top 10. It was considered by both Karen and Richard to be their signature song. According to The Billboard Book of Top 40 Hits (6th edition), on the U.S. Adult Contemporary singles chart, it was the duo's best-performing tune, lasting seven weeks at No. 1 (beating the six-week stay at the top of "Close to You"). The song also helped them to win two Grammy Awards in 1971: Best New Artist and Best Contemporary Performance by a Duo, Group, or Chorus (for "Close to You").

The harmony is actually the result of overdubbing. Richard and Karen would lay down tracks of themselves singing until Richard liked the content. He adapted this technique from listening to his father’s recordings of Les and Mary Paul who originated the technique in the 1950’s. Also, Karen is a true 3+ octave contralto singer who had no voice training. She started out in their group as a drummer and started singing some. Richard recognized she had an incredible voice and convinced her to become the lead singer and abandon the drums. She always considered herself a drummer who sang. She was also known as one-take Karen-several of their hit songs were literally done with one take-she was so frigging pitch perfect! Listen to “Solitaire” if you want to hear the full range of her voice and especially her lower register (Karen always said the money was in her basement!) She also had total and complete control of her breath-if you watch her she sings effortlessly and rarely opens her mouth beyond that required for speaking. That allowed her to use note stretching that was almost surreal. Many believe, including Paul McCartney, that she was one of, if not, the best female singers ever.

The Carpenters were a group of the 70's, their music was played on AM radio stations and it was labeled "Easy Listening", "soft rock" or "Contemporary" music. Perhaps today's generation may call it "Christian" music because there isn't any profanity or sexual connotations in it, but the only "Christian" references would be in their Christmas music.
