I've never driven a train, but in university, I did take a course in physics. Even if a train is only moving 5 miles per hour, mass matters. These beasts do not stop on a dime.

Coincidentally, the surface area each wheel contacts on the rail is about 1 dime. For a 140 car train, the entire mass sits on the rails using an area approximately the size of a large desk.

17:30 - replacing those diamonds (especially the double and quad ones!) just blows my mind every time. Even with power tools, I can just tell what a PITA that must be to get those rails to line up *exactly* where you want them to, and held together strong enough to sustain the weight of freight trains all day, every day.

Boy I'll bet the engineers hate going through Darwinville--I mean LaGrange. Loved "Jingle Bells" at Horseshoe Curve AND Wichita--and I think it's so neat that Metro-North has cars named for Ichabod Crane and the Charter Oak! Ms. Barb, I never knew you, but I bet I would have liked you. Wherever you are now, I hope there are trains there! Another great Grab Bag with another beautiful ending; thanks, you guys. 🌹

She was a very loyal member of Virtual Railfan and chatted at many of our locations. Many looked forward to seeing her. She passed away in 2020 and many of her friends at Virtual Railfan pitched in at a fundraiser made by Matthew Schuh to erect a bench with her name on it at Skykomish.@@user-de1hg8cf6b

Imagine the following phone call to their Insurance carrier: I came to the tracks and saw that the train had the right-of-way (the train was to my right side) I stopped to let the train pass me and the train hit me! The train had lots of room to go around me and they didn't.

Welded rail train in Roanoke, power move in Decatur, nice lash ups and jingle bells at Horseshoe Curve,car had plenty of time to move, alot of those freight locomotives fully fueld up can weigh up to 250 tons per engine and a big train can take up to a mile or more to stop in emergency, NS brick/geometry train and lots of great trains👍!🛤🚂

That collision was ridiculously avoidable. The person just had to throw their car in reverse problem solved, but he or she will probably try to get a new car at the RR's expense or money. And it's all on video, not a leg to stand on. 🙄

0:08 12-unit lash-up! 2:27 airplane fuselages on an intermodal 3:00 NS 4000 leading 3:13 well car on a flatbed 3:30 CSX 30 and UP 1989 trailing 4:28 C44-9W and SD70M-2 with a welded rail train 5:33 ex-CEFX unit trailing 5:53 New Haven P32AC-DM on the rear. 228-231 are owned by CTDOT. Any other Metro-North rolling stock with red on them like the 3rd car are owned in part by CTDOT and can sometimes be seen on CT Rail trains 6:54 CT Rail P40 and a Horizon car on the Empire Service. CT Rail has 12 P40s acquired between 2005 and 2015, and are being overhauled at Beech Grove, Indiana 7:12 CTDOT's cab car at the front has state seals on it 7:54 the Amtrak switchers (in La Grange at 22:50) 8:02 two P42s and the Metroliner business car tow an Avelia Liberty. Alstom is still building them despite the completed sets having flaws (again at 24:30) 8:16 these M8s have Connecticut seals and Metro-North logos on them 8:38 ALC42 301 "Blackout" pulls a Northeast Reigonal of Amfleet IIs 9:04 13-unit lash-up of mostly AC44C6Ms in fresh paint 10:09 CP and KCS units trailing over Horseshoe Curve 11:06 I can't remember the last time I saw NS 6963 on Virtual Railfan cameras 11:38 SKOL and UP local jobs race 12:44 what are Saratoga and North Creek bi-levels doing in Quincy, Illinois?! These are C1 cars designed to work in pairs, of which 10 were built by Tokyu Car Corporation in 1991 to a Comeng design. They were a prototype for the C3 set and most ended up in the hands of SLRG/ Iowa Pacific. 12:57 NS towing Amtrak 13:26 two BNSF locos and an NS high-hood geep 13:55 WOW! Two LTEX F40PHs still in Amtrak colors! I think these were once planned to have been rebuilt as cab cars like 406 was 14:05 P42s 175 and 131 and ALC42s 348 and 349 on the Capitol Limited 14:26 NS 4005 leading 14:40 the black car that got hit by a train in La Grange. this was on the crossing east of the street running 15:40 11-unit light power move 16:18 the red flashing lights and bells mean nothing to this jogger 17:10 setting fire to the rails in Deshler. But all the work done was not in the parts they set fire to 18:18 old Cotton Belt boxcar 19:07 once the freight train clears, they install a new electrical box 20:08 NS 4296 moving NS 38 without any inspection coach 21:45 NS Pier 6 coal hopper 21:55 CSX 1976 22:05 Brightline train with Orlando Health wrap 22:30 Southern boxcar 22:39 so that's what the big caboose is for! 23:36 CSX 1871 leading 23:55 BNSF SD9 trailing! Quite a rare sight ever since the GEVOs came in 24:46 two river rowboats sailing together

Horseshoe Curve, Altoona, Penna. Back in the early 1980s, I jumped over the fence and crossed the tracks to get good photos of two trains moving around the mountains at the same time. Before the Internet, before Virtual Railfan.

Power Move. Railroads need to send power units from places that are commonly destinations to places that are commonly starting points like Ports. So they attach several locomotives to a train that's going that way

Cold weather contracts the metal rails making it difficult to work on/disassemble some trackage so an implement often referred to as a "fire rope" used to heat up rail to release enough pressure so work can be performed.
