This was a video i put together to show how to rebuild the carb / carburetor on the Yamaha TTR90 dirt bike. This is a 2006 model, but would be the same as many other years (2000,2001,2002,2003,2004,2005,2007)
At the end i shot my dogs chasing me around (french bulldog and rottweiler mix)

Thank you so much for this video I have never worked on a carberator before but your detailed explanation and great camera angles where top notch. After my first rebuild I had too high of an idle but after watching and rebuilding again I noticed the problem and I was only able to spot it from your great camera angle! I started the day with a bike that would not start and ended with a perfectly running machine! Thanks a ton!!

Thank you. Grandson's 2005 TT r90 was hard starting, then wouldn't start at all. Pilot jet was mangled and clogged. Rebuild the whole thing while I was there. Yamaha manual had minimal information so thank you for the details like, where the short and long springs go and how to get the needle seat out.

Man I have had my carb off about 5 times now and still had a top end bog or better yet, a sputter, that I couldn't sort out. The main jet was clean and the float height was reset to stock. Finally after seeing you punch out that nozzle and sleeve I finally discovered my problem. Everything else was spotless but these other two parts(that I didn't know existed) were completely clogged. I cleaned them up and what do ya know I can finally rev 'er out. Symptoms before the fix were that it ran fine other than wide-open throttle where it would sound similar to a two-stroke. The bike would also run fine without the airbox attached to the carb(Not recommended). If you are having the same problems that I was, then watch this video closely and you will see what you missed. Thanks Matt Dobson. I was about ready to give up on a cure for the bog. You the man!

@mattdobson123
@mattdobson123 8 жыл бұрын
either the jets or passages are clogged.. You may be able to clean it all out, but you may have to rebuild. If you leave your bike sitting with fuel in the carburetor for any length of time, the fuel evaporates and leaves a residue which hardens and sets like glue. The airways have been blocked in the body of the carb and because they are so narrow the pilot jet is always the first thing to block . Try high pressure air through all of the jets and carb body . If this doesn't work try acetone and soak the carb to soften the residue and then hit it with the air again . One problem with the acetone though , it will wreck all of the rubber gaskets your carb may have , so remove them first. Best bet is to always use a fuel stabilizer if the bike is going to sit.

Thanks for the video. Where did you get that set of brushes? Also- my pilot jet has a hole at the top where you put the flat head- the hole does not seem to go all the way through- no matter what I try to clear it with- the bike runs after putting it back together, so it must not be clogged- but I just want to verify that that is correct if you can remember that jet. Thanks, Tom

I did the same thing, and hoped for the best. I had on/off issues.. Once I rebuilt the carb it ran great.. So its up to you.. The rebuild kit is $35-$40, so it's a little bit of money. You can also try just cleaning the carb.. Spray a bunch of Carb cleaner throughout, and that may do the job...

I have rebuilt my sons 01 TTR90 and it still runs very rich and bogs a 3/4 to full throttle. I have changed the main jet to a 85 I think it is but it still bogs? Anyone have any clue to what I can try next? It even has a FMF exhaust on there so its getting any more air than stock. So confused and tired of banging my head with a solution.
@mattdobson123
@mattdobson123 2 жыл бұрын
the bog is always an issue.. I found this on a site, but its tough to nail down the exact cause: The “Bog” simply means the engine is not receiving enough fuel when you go to wide open throttle. While there are other issues that may cause similar reactions within the carburetor, often the problem can be traced back to the accelerator pump system. Incorrect adjustment is the typical culprit. The accelerator pump function, as mentioned, is based on hydraulic principles. Therefore, it is essential that the accelerator pump always has tension at your normal idle position. Any air gap here will delay the actuation of the accelerator pump system allowing air to rush into the engine without fuel. The common misconception is that it is necessary to adjust the pump arm to obtain an air gap. This is correct; however that air gap is only at Wide Open Throttle (W.O.T.) not at idle. The air gap is simply to ensure additional travel in the pump arm so it does not bottom out on the fuel bowl. If it does bottom out eventually it could loosen the accelerator pump housing causing a fuel leak. Fuel leaks are something we all want to avoid. Assuming the first adjustment is correct. Then the next step in the process is to add more fuel to the incoming air which is accomplished by increasing the size of the pump discharge nozzle or squirter. This will quite often correct the “Bog” or hesitation by richening the air/fuel mixture when the pump system is activated. If the carburetor works well everywhere else on the track then a bigger squirter might be the only change necessary. Pump squirters are available in a wide range of sizes, the bigger the number (size) the more fuel when you accelerate. Simply remove the pump nozzle screw, lift off the old nozzle and install the new. Be sure both gaskets above and below the nozzle are replaced. If the gaskets are a different thickness the thicker goes under the nozzle and thinner one on top.

@@mattdobson123 Went just perfectly! 1/4 inline fuel filter worked great, also rebuilt and cleaned the carb. These bikes need a fuel filter right from factory because of the small aperture of the carb jets and passages, they plug right up with the smallest amount of dirt and the bike starts running poorly. Thanks for the reply.

@mattdobson123
@mattdobson123 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry i no longer have this bike but found this info on the web: The fuel screw under the welch plug & the pilot jet regulate fuel for the idle circuit. This is the first and most common passage to get gummed up, since it is the smallest orifice. Also, after the carbs are cleaned or rebuilt, you really need to adjust the fuel screw(s) to what your engine WANTS, not what the service manual calls for. The service manual may be a good starting point, however they are usually too lean. Better throttle response and performance can be achieved with proper pilot jet and fuel screw settings.

It sounds like the needle valve in the carb is not closing. Remove the bowl from the carb and clean any debris/junk that may be interfering with the needle and seat. If you don't find any obvious junk causing the problem check to see if the needle and seat looks worn. Replace the needle and seat if necessary. Clean the bowl before reassembly. Be careful not to disturb the float level setting. It's a good idea to install a fuel filter between the tank and the carb if you don't already have one.
