Good to see you again Andrea! One other thing that worked for me - if one is using the same meal over and over again... is to make a first educated guess, and then adapt (if required) on your next meal. Not all meals digest in the same way - even if their carbon content is the same. Pizza is tough to get right, and I typically do multiple boluses.

Hi Andrea, When I was diagnosed in Australia, there was a book everyone received from the diabetes educators called the traffic light book, all the foods were shown in portions , and that was 15g. So really carb counted that way. Only trouble was all the 15g portions were equal, ie. Apple equal to banna, or 2 arrowroot biscuits , 1 small potatoe. I didn't know why one thing would send me high, another not. Years later the GI (glycemic index) came out by prof Jennifer Brand-Miller. Book called low gi diet. This made a huge Difference, Eg. Some potatoes have a higher gi then glucose, so could avoid them. Pizza is a high gi, I avoid those. Maybe you could do a video sometime on the glycemic index, and how it is a factor in the carb counting . God Bless ❤

Oh Rex - this is so informative and interesting for me to read! Honestly I don't know all that much about the subject of High/Low glycemic index foods, but can absolutely relate to foods packing more of a punch than others and needing more of a pre-bolus accordingly! I'm going to add your video suggestion to my list and try to educate myself on this topic further because I really think it could help people! Thank you so much for bringing it to my attention and I just wish you the most wonderful week ahead my friend!! 💙

Thanks yet again Andrea ☺️. I have a child who was diagnosed with T1D last year. We were given the carbs & cals book at the point of diagnosis with digital scales (NHS). The app was recommended at the same time, which has been great. However, just to make people aware, the fee has recently changed and there is now a regular subscription fee to get access to all the info you need as a T1D & previously got with the initial one off payment. If you're an existing customer the service should remain unchanged. Unfortunately we bought my child a new phone with NFC as we now have the libre 2, so will need to monthly subscribe if we want the full service. Thanks again for this week's chat 😁

I find that very disappointing. I will have to look into this further. Different sources of carbs affect people differently. Rice is a my downfall, So I stay away. It spikes my BS and stays with me longer. Fruits increase my glucose but metabolizes quickly. This is where experiences help me. Bolus application for me also modifies the time period depending on the type of carbs. Eat lighter breads bagels bad(60g) croissants good(16g). Thanx Andrea for more great tips!!!!! Going to download the app now.

Regards fr Canada, great video. One thing , as far as i was aware & feel free to correct me if i'm wrong . Don't natural carbs(sugars) from fruit enter your system at a slower rate as opposed to processed sugars such as fructose ? Not to confuse it combine that with carbs from potatoes or bread , or pasta. Those carbs are a whole other ball game.
@ShesDiabetic
@ShesDiabetic 2 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right - however, we are all so so very different in terms of how our bodies react to different type of sugars. Actually it's for this very reason, when I mention in the video about dates being a low treatment but only when I'm not too low, it is because if I were too low they wouldn't hit quick enough. It's all so complicated. I try to keep it as simple as possible in explanation and then hope viewers know their bodies and filter it through their own experience! This is my goal at least! But I really thank you for your comment here and for watching, truly!! You are awesome!! 🙏🏻

When I first used this app back when I first started carb counting (2014), it was completely free. Now they're charging £36/pa, which is a big jump. It also makes no sense what's free and what's part of the paid for section. I looked up an apple. It told me that an 85g apple is 9g carbs, a 130g apple is 13g carbs, but to find out what 170g apple is, I have to pay £36/pa. But even I can work out, it would be 17g. I'll continue to use the free part, and maybe it'll come down in price enough that I can afford it, or it reverts to being free again.

Only problem is that who eats the core of an apple? Some people leave more than others so it's useless when carb counting for a small child. It should show everything prepared or ready to eat.
@robertl4182
@robertl4182 2 жыл бұрын
Apply common sense to the portion. Do you eat the peel of the banana? Measure the approximate edible amount. It takes a little effort. If it’s a child take extra care. Cut it in measurable slices. Bolus accordingly watch glucose after eating.
@tom7676
@tom7676 2 жыл бұрын
@@robertl4182 exactly Robert, useless as it doesn't tell you if the core is included per 100gm or not. It's totally impractical for a 6yr old to be slicing up and weighing an apple on a day out. If you prepare the apple before going out it goes brown and they down want it. It's very easy to say common sense but to be honest that's a stupid remark. And also, we monitor blood sugars every minute of everyday to keep out daughter in range as much as we can so that's also a daft thing to say.
@ShesDiabetic
@ShesDiabetic 2 жыл бұрын
I’d like to hop in here. I think Robert was just trying to be helpful, and I believe you are too Tom. I truly believe some of these weights take into account the inedible portions of the items. There’s no ‘perfect’ way to count of dose, it all takes experience and learning, and even then things will fluctuate as that’s what life with diabetes is like, unpredictable. It sounds like you’re an amazing parent and looking after the health of your child, which is so admirable and no doubt stress-filled at times (I know I’ve spoken to my parents about this frequently and still can’t quite get my head around it!) Please just know we’re all trying our best, and I truly believe Robert was only trying to help. We all are only trying to help, and all do things slightly differently 💙🙏
