Today I give you my 2 year ownership report on my "DieselGate" Volkswagen Jetta TDI SportWagen. I go over reliability, issues I've had with the car, how it drives, how the DSG transmission is holding up, and real-world MPG fuel economy numbers on it. Enjoy!

I love my 2012 jetta tdi. Bought at 75k, and have over 107k on it now. Best car I've owned, I've used it as a lawn care work vehicle and I've beat it to shit. I dont warm it up in the cold for as long as I should, I keep it FULLY loaded 8 months out of the year, and I'm 25 and drive like it. It's a great car. Oh, and I still average 35+ mpg combined

Mystyclpork it's true! I beat mine to shit and the cars warranty covers the entire drivetrain till 140000 miles, I beat mine to high hell and still get great mpg, I do like 80 everywhere I go and put like 50000 miles at least. And once that warranty is up hehehehe 6 speed tdi of course

113k now, and a new season to tackle! Already was able to fit a timemaster, whacker, edger, blower, hand tools, a power washer with a hose, and plenty more. Just added an ohio steel manual aerator and the groundskeeper ii as well. Still all fits, still getting awesome mileage, still making that side money! If you see a tdi jetta just fucking buy it, I'll be looking for another if mine somehow dies anytime soon

Bought a 2012 Jetta Sportwagen S (no sunroof, base TDI)TDI, DSG in April of 2018. It was a certified preowned, with 59K miles on it. First thing is I absolutely loved it. I've had BMW's, C class Mercedes-Benz and Audis. The VW rides just like one expects a fine German to ride, the handing was pretty good for a long top and the mileage was fabulous. I averaged 35MPG and on one 250 mile, mostly interstate trip I averaged over 41 MPG, at 75 to 85 MPH. But, right after I purchased it the dealer replaced the entire fuel system at 61K miles (the car had gone it limp mode and had several trouble lights), fuel pumps, fuel lines, filters, everything supposedly, under warranty. A very expensive job, for sure. The car was doing great until last fall. I had a right rear wheel speed sensor go bad. Then, in the fall of last year (2020) the right rear caliper froze up requiring new rotors, pads and brake fluid replacement and three weeks ago, around the 1st of February, 2021 the left front wheel speed sensor went out. At that point I felt I could not trust the car, as much as I loved it I traded it. It was in perfect condition at that point, mechanically and cosmetically, not even a ding on it. Anyway I got good money for the trade. I really wanted to trade it on a GTI S model but the sting of maintaining a German auto again still hurt. Went with a 2021 Toyota Corolla Hatchback, with 6 speed manual in silver metallic with a black metallic roof. Other than it is wagon like with the hatchback the two cars are not comparable. I am thinking after several years of maintenance free ownership (hopefully), I will go back in to VW with a MK VIII GTI w/ a manual 6 speed.

getting good mpg is a point of pride for owners of these for some reason. My fuel economy is about the same as yours, a little lower in frigid cold. I haven't met any owners personally that are much different unless they tune, delete, or both. If you do that you can get up into the 50's. Love your videos!!

Thank you so much for watching! What sort of annoys me is that I was selling VWs new from 2007-2010, so I was there when these things came out, and I sold a ton of them. My customers back then would tell me they were regularly getting high 40's on the highway without even trying. Of course, this was before we knew that everything wasn't on the up and up with these cars. So when I bought this one I knew the EPA highway mileage estimate was revised downward 3 MPG (it was originally 40 MPG highway), so I figured it would do low to mid 40s without much trouble. Unfortunately that hasn''t been the case. I think I've only broken 40 MPG on two tanks of fuel, and both were under pretty ideal conditions for doing so. Still, it's been a great car and I don't regret buying it.

I bought my 2013 Jetta TDI Sportwagen in October 2018 too. It had 31,000 miles on it and came with the sunroof, navigation, satellite radio, etc. it has the 48 month power train warranty which came in handy which the high pressure fuel pump failed sending metal bits through the fuel system. The dealer replaced both fuel pumps, the fuel filter, the injectors and fuel lines. Without the warranty it would have been about $4,500. I also had a problem with the sunroof leaking due to plugged or disconnected drain line lines. I really like the car’s handling and ride. I get about 34 mpg in town using the DSG in sport mode and in the mid 40s on the highway. I put about 13,000 miles on it in 2 years.

3 yrs ago I bought a 2013 Jetta Sportswagen TDI from Ole Ben Franklin Motors in Knoxville. It was picked out by a friend of mine. I went out, looked at it I thought VW??? Diesel!!! Oh hell no, (Diesel Gate) but he convinced me for a test drive. I liked it and ok I bought it as-is. $8,000 73,000 mi. Well 3 yrs later I still have it and turned out to be the best car I ever had! I put 15,000 miles on it in 3 months! Now it sits at 137,000 mi! I did very little to it, my record mileage is 57 mpg City and 67 mpg HWY. I avg 42 combined mpg. I love it so much we just bought another one just like it! 2014 $15,000 with 107,000 mi. I highly recommend one there hard to find and a Stick Shift is very rare! So now we have Twin VW Jetta Sportswagen TDI in the driveway, only difference is one is a 13 and the new one is a 14!

Like many of you that have commented, I purchased a fixed TDI. Overall I am extremely pleased with this car. This is my 4th VW purchase. Maintenance since purchasing in 2018 has been relatively normal. Leaking sunroof repaired under warranty. No fuel delivery issues. My overall average MPG is 44.8 with a high of 60.2 on a 34 mile highway trip in August 2021. I would buy another one. EPA and VW need to find a way to re-introduce these back into the US market.
@davidparker9676

Diesel vehicles are strongly disliked by the EPA. The future of diesel in the USA looks like they are trying to push consumers and fleets away from diesel and toward electric and CNG. It is sad because diesel is the most economical and power rich fuel we have, other "alternatives" are in their infancy and nowhere near as good. The golden era of TDIs was in the early 2000s, very simple engines, extremely reliable and more efficient than most modern diesels with all of the emissions equipment and de-tuning.

i’ve got a 2011 sportwagen tdi 6sp with 80k on it. i love the car, i’ve had it for about a year now. i agree that they are getting hard to find, i’m in iowa and you see quite a few tdi’s around but not a ton for sale. i really like the wagen bc it’s pretty luxurious compared to my old 2005.5 jetta tdi. i agree about fuel mileage, i seem to get around 30-35 ish. i can’t be certain. it struggles getting anything above 38-39. this was a slight disappointment bc i was getting 45mpg all day with my older tdi. and i’m not hard in the throttle either. but that’s the trade off with the newer vehicle i guess. mine has been very reliable (knock on wood) and i plan to keep it as long as i can. i haven’t had any issues that you stated but the bottom of my front fender on the driver side in starting the rust (salt and grime from winter). also, one thing i don’t like is all the body lines, they just collect dust/dirt/grime and you really have to keep up on cleaning it. i live on gravel road so i try to keep it clean as much as i can.

I bought a 2014/mk6 dgs tdi a year ago. Emotionally I rate similar to my '73 chevelle ss back in the 70ties. Otherwise so far it is a great driving vehicle.

I too had the moonroof leak. I have been keeping the car under a cover as there is a Redwood tree that drips sap on it. I had left it at the airport and with a large storm dumping several inches of rain. There was a couple of inches of water on the floor front passenger side. The dealership reports it was a plugged drain tube. There were 3 other cars, different models, that were in the shop for the same. VW obviously has a big problem with the drains for the huge sky roof.

Your Jetta is a mk6 not 5. Anyways, the gas door release is most likely the actuator. You can buy them relatively cheap from rock auto and is relatively cheap. As far as the dsg, just make sure you keep up with the 40k service interval. As far as long term reliability there are 3 main components that fail. The dpf, egr/intake gets clogged and the cp4 high pressure fuel pumps aren’t too reliable. As far as the dpf/egr your only choice would be a delete and tune but the intake ports and cp4 pump are a little easier. Doing an oil catch can will help with carbon build up a good bit bc a lot comes from oil being sucked into the intake from the pcv system. Without an egr delete you won’t be able to completely stop soot buildup but egr soot is easier to remove then carbon buildup from oil. You could spray carbon cleaner into the intake every 10k to keep soot buildup to a minimum but will still need to pull and clean the egr valve periodically. Carbon buildup may be affecting your fuel economy as well depending on mileage and type of driving the car as done throughout its life. As far as your high pressure fuel pump, they make an adapter to install the cp3 fuel pump which is way more reliable and produces high pressures. It’ll help economy a little, reduce exhaust gas temps and makes the pump and all exhaust components more reliable. You would also need a tune to go with the cp3 fuel pump. A tune is the best thing you can do to boost economy btw. Good luck to you bud and hope the car starts to exceed your expectations as time goes on.

This guy lives in Long Beach California. There is no way he could get away with doing any deletes or tuning as the smog testing would quickly identify both and cause him endless headaches. California is not the great place it used to be, it kinda sucks now.
@steffytheking
@steffytheking 3 ай бұрын
@@davidparker9676 welp that sucks. But if he can’t get a delete, he can do a tune which changes the dpf’s regen setting that tend to make the dpf’s more reliable. I’ve seen a bunch of research showing the benefit of hho generators on a diesel when it comes to reduced soot, build up and the dpf cooks off at a lower temperature which further increases reliability and fuel economy bc regens tend to be pretty fuel hungry. California still may be a problem in that they see any mod and they want to start ish over it. That mod may drop all emissions to 0 but how dare you modify your car without the king’s permission.

I'd say in general the newer the better. As far as the US Model Jetta SportWagen goes the 2009 models had a slightly different front fascia and radio, the 2010+ models look like this one.

Shiiit I’m averaging 16mpg on my 2015 Silverado ... I have 2 months to look for a sportswagen tdi Not sure if to go manual 6speed or get and automatic. Or get the 2.5 gasser!
@CarDietrich
@CarDietrich 3 жыл бұрын
I think you could probably get better MPG overall with the 6-speed manual, but they are a little harder to find. The 2.5 is cheaper, but honestly that engine is not desirable. It's course and rough and sounds like hell and the TDI feels both faster and more refined. TDI probably has better long-term reliability too, even though its technically more complicated. If you find a really clean 2.5 with a good service history and a good price I guess go for it, but personally I would not have even considered this car with that motor.

My dad had a late 90s jetta tdi manual transmission that got 50ish on the highway and 40ish around town with just over 300k on the odometer. It was a great little car but it seems they have continued to over engineer the heck out of their vehicles much to the shade tree mechanics chagrin.

Your fuel economy is bad only because they've fixed the car. My car hasn't been fixed and it pushes almost twice your miles per gallon. Averaging 55Mpg.

Def noticed that my fuel Economy went down after VW fixed our Golf. But, then I deleted the emissions and got a Malone stage 2 and the mpg went back up above the original mileage

In the US market (which is where I am) 2014 was the final year of the Jetta SportWagen, which was still based on the MkV Golf platform. For the 2015 model the Golf SportWagen debuted on a newer platform and replaced the Jetta SportWagen.
