Hi Anthony, Your efforts in helping others are really appreciated, and I have noticed that you reply to every single question which is amazing 👍 I am Dr. Karrar, a Cardiology Specialist, I had my speciality training in the American University of Beirut, 3 years in the Internal Medicine and 3 years in Cardiology, also I have experience of 4 years as Cardiology specialist in Oman. I applied for Specialist assessment pathway My question: 1. What is expected in the RACP interview? any medical or clinical questions? 2. What is the opportunities to get Cardiology registrar's job if required by the RACP ? Thanks

Hi Karrar, thanks for the positive feedback. It's a pity you had not contacted me earlier than at this phase. Cardiology is difficult to get into in Australia. I know of other IMG Cardiology Consultants who have been granted substantial comparability by the RACP but been unable to get a position to undertake the specialist recognition process. You might have a better shot with General Medicine. If you watch the other videos you will see that the interview is partly about reviewing your application and partly assessing you clinically. In general I find most European (continent) Specialists gain partial or substantial comparability. It depends on the country and the specialist college.

I'm a fully-trained ob-gyn, but in my country, we only study for three years. Hi Carmen, unfortunately RANZCOG are quite strict in terms of expecting you to do a 5 year training program which is similar to RANZCOG. So you may struggle.

Hello Leo I would need to go over your career in more detail to be definitive. A 4 year formal training program in Neurology should be sufficient for partial comparability with the RACP. But it also comes down to whether there are openings in Neurology in Australia. I'd recommend booking a call.

It's hard to say as this is a very small specialty in Australia. Like most specialties there will be a need for Nuclear Medicine Specialists somewhere in Australia.

It can be tough getting through the college of surgeons and then there is the issue of being able to find a supervised post in neurosurgery which is not that easy. Anyone with AMC Part 1 can apply for jobs. You will need to pass the AMC Part 2 eventually. This is explained in my standard pathway videos.

RANZCOG generally like more training than 3 years and you should ensure that you have been trained for the full scope of practice for a FRANZCOG in Australia including minimally invasive surgery.

Thank you for the information. I’m planning on getting Ortho surgery training (4 years) here in Italy; do you know, by any chance, if Italian specialists are generally accepted? I couldn’t find any info on it, so I’m wondering if, unless of course Italian specialists are usually accepted, it’d be wiser/less time consuming to just apply for the standard pathway and try to match into res in Australia. Any info/personal experience on the matter would be appreciated.

The answer to your question is that colleges genreally assesses each applicant and their training on a case by case basis. If your training program is poorly documented and structured and not competency based then you will likely find you will struggle with the RACS assessment.

Hi Anthony! Thanks so much for all the information you're putting out there for us IMGs. I have a question regarding the RANZCP's Comparability Checklist. One of the requirements is having sufficient "Scope of practice as a Consultant Psychiatrist", and it states that you should have worked for 3+ years as one. Am I right in thinking that this means exclusively after the training program (in my particular case, residency in Argentina)? If so, do you happen to know if you can attain at least partial comparability if you don't have those three years under your belt? I know it's all on an individual basis, but even anecdotal evidence would be great. I'd love to work in Australia, but I'd much prefer to do it fresh out of residency, even if it means training for 24 more months. Again, thanks so much.

Similarly, one of the items is 2+ years working in Australia/NZ as a Consultant Psychiatrist/Advanced Trainee equivalent, which is a tall order!

The most important thing I want to know is the details and process of interview-based assessment. They said the assessment committee will clarify the applicants' experience and training by a standardized template. That is what I confused, What is the standardized template?

Hi Dr Anthony. Your videos have been immensely helpful. Thank you so much! I completed my medical degree in an Australian University (Monash University). Following which I worked in Malaysia and completed my specialist training in Anaesthesia in Malaysia on a pathway which includes a Fellowship from the College of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland. I plan to gain employment in Australia as a registrar / senior registrar in anaesthesia / ICU first and register through the SIMG pathway while I am already working in Australia. Do you think this is a feasible / possible approach?

Yes. Perfectly feasible. I have been working with a couple of SIMGs from Malaysia recently and am impressed by the rigour of their PG training systems.

2021 was an unusual year because of COVID. There was still a relatively high rate of not comparable 33%. Also you need to look at how many are also completing the pathway.

As I said both are difficult. With RACS you have about a 1 in 3 chance of getting onto training per year.

Statistically that should be sufficient to gain Partial Comparability with RANZCR. Sadly that lands you in a bit of a bottleneck with other SIMGs looking for Advanced Training posts to complete the pathway.

It is a common misconception that completing the various UK College exams helps in Australia. It doesn't really. Completing specialist training and obtaining the CCT in the UK is what matters. But it also sounds like you have enough already to consider applying.

Hi I know of quite a few German doctors who have been able to work here both for a short period as well as longer period. I think the training system is reasonably different in Germany. But reasonably solid. So its definitely possible to translate across.

Hello obtaining a job is IMO the hardest part of the process. But yes once you do you will be paid. This is Australia and we don’t take too kindly to employers who don’t pay people properly.

In 2018 10 German specialists were found partially comparable and 3 substantially comparable out of 13 across all specialties. We don’t get breakdowns per country and per specialty but most colleges sit around 70% for granting comparability.

As much as I researched, after getting Partially Comparable recognition a SIMG has to do at least 2 years of training/fellowship in australia. After those 2 years, Does a partially comparable SIMG finally get specialist registration or he has to still do 1 year of supervised practice like that required for 'substantially comparable' SIMGs ?

So you have things in the wrong order. You verify your qualifications with the AMC first. From the sounds of it you don’t need to do the AMC exams. thanks for helping with all questions related to validation in australia. I have a doubt, when you are graduated and have special skills in the United Kingdom, is it easier to make the equivalence when comparing with other countries? The training is very similar. Would that make it easier? Another doubt, you met doctors who validated your specialty, even though you are a surgeon such as orthopedics or neurosurgery, as I heard that it is almost impossible to validate surgical specialties.

@@CareerDoctor thanks for the helpfull content! I get where Bruno is coming from. he is saying that this doesnt really make sense for english specialists recognition to be easier. Why? Because some countries have equaly as good or better speciallists than UK. Yes Australia is a frontrunner in speciallist education like USA, France and Germany but in a big portion of EU the whole system is normalized which implies that the quality difference medical education and specialist programs amongst most EU countries is so small that it is not quantifiable. There is also the argument that some countries will predominantly take the top 1% of med school applicants in terms of cognitive ability, ppl that simply learn quicker and make the right decisions quicker with a higher accuracy. This for instance is not the case for UK where personality traits, empathy .. play a bigger part. Dont get me wrong personality traits are important in day to day patient care but have 0 benefit for the specialist skill level. So the question is rather: Are You implying that there is a some level of discrimination towards non-US or non-UK speciallists? I really doubt that let us say a french specialist program or speciallist is somehow worse than an UK one.

The system in Australia generally discriminated in favour of doctors from the UK, USA, Rep Ireland and Canada. This is partly historical. Whether it is valid or not is a reasonable question.

Hi Anthony I have completed 5.5 years of MBBS , 3 year of internal medicine training and just Now 3 years of Nephrology advance training but i don't have consultant level experience in my country India. Hello Anthony..I am really grateful to you for posting these immensely helpful videos. I have completed superspecialist training in Plastic and reconstructive surgery (MCh)from Mumbai. I wish to pursue a fellowship in Australia.Is it possible that I can get absorbed into plastic surgery specialty in the college where I pursue my fellowship during which they find my skills to be substantially competent and comparable to Australian standards
