Sadly the only thing this video doesn't mention is the importance of doing home blood glucose monitoring! I've had a diabetic cat and became quite experienced in understanding and performing the monitoring using a BG meter. The standard protocol should be test, feed, shoot. By monitoring with home testing you can greatly reduce the risk of a hypoglycemic event. And if you cat is displaying any symptoms a quick blood glucose test with your home tester can either confirm it or tell you its something else. If you can give insulin shots you can do home testing....its worth the peace of mind.

@@Verbsdescribeus I rewatched and still don't see any mention of home BG testing, Sorry if I missed it. It says call your vet and monitoring is important (which it is!) but didn't hear mention of home BG testing. If you are home testing and your cat is displaying those symptoms the first thing you'd want to do is a BG test to see how low he is and then to monitor it as you give him the syrup and or food to bring him back up to a safe level.

Hey Jeff, we just had a diabetic cat join us here and I"m wondering if you could recommend a blood glucose monitor to check his levels. I'm going to switch him straight away to our Zero Carb kibble instead of the 16% he's been fed, so it's important to be able to check this.

@@headbutthotel4471 The Alpha Trac 3 is cat and dog specific. That said a standard human BG meter ( I used a Contour BG meter) can be used but you have to correct the reading by about 20 -30 %. The blood plasma in humans is different than in cats so a human BG meter works but you have to figure the correction which I did for years without and issue. Yes very important to check / monitor when changing diet! Anytime a cat is diagnosed with diabetes I would recommend switching their diet to a wet low carb food (10% or less carbs) first for a week or two monitoring their BG before starting insulin. If they have already started insulin then definitely make sure you are testing and monitoring when switching diet! I would recommend only wet food as it helps with hydration. (I use Fancy Feast Classic Pate) canned. Low card diet can make a big difference in their BG and could make insulin dose difficult to manage. If you start the cat on insulin and the diet alone drops the reading 20 or 30% and you aren't monitoring you could end up with your cat crashing. The other thing to consider is the cat being in a new environment is likely to be stressed and would likely cause higher BG readings. That's why I recommend home testing. As you know when cats go to the vets office they are often in flight or fight mode which can push BG sky high! I think that maybe that vets sometimes miss a diabetic cat, or can't get an accurate "curve" for dosing. For more and ongoing info and help check out www.felinediabetes.com They have some great info and message boards plus a food list with carb break down info. Also a great downloadable spreadsheet to help manage your cats diabetes. It sounds a bit daunting, but really its not once you get things stabilized and home testing is the key yo that. Let me know if you have any other questions.

2 months of home treatment for my senior cat and these low blood sugar episodes happen once a week, but on the positive side the insulin injections are needed just once a day

Are you testing your cat before every meal? Also what type of insulin are you using that is a 24 hr insulin? Remember to follow the "test / feed / shoot" protocol. By testing before meals you know what his / her BG reading is. If for some reason he doesn't eat then its best not to give him the shot or reduce the units so as not to induce a low BG event. (always talk to your vet on this) Also cats BG will tend to go lower at night. So if the random events that are occurring once a week happen at night or you notice very early morning before food you might ask your vet about possibly adjusting the dose for your cats night time shot.

Why does no one mention to measure blood glucose levels immediately?

At 1:13 the video tells all the signs from mild hypoglycemia, and what to do. Then at 2:24 it tells the signs from severe hypoglycemia and what to do.

I'm disabled, poor, and can't afford the vet. I'm pretty sure my cat has diabetes. I have it myself, take pills, and can't afford insulin. Unfortunately, being disabled is a crime for which a person needs to be punished. When I become hypoglycemic, which can hit suddenly, among other things, my muscles don't work right and become jerky. I try to keep milk and peanut butter on hand. Afterward, I'm usually wiped out and need to sleep. Neither of us has much time left. I receive poor medical care and my cat doesn't receive any. Like I said, being disabled is a crime.

Title says "Recognizing and Treating Hypoglycemia", but shows literally nothing to assist in recognising this. No examples at all. Downvote.

Give the cat herbs, like black cardamom, curcumin, berberine. You can mix it into little honey ( don't worry honey is good for diabetes) with few drops of olive oil and make a paste, apply it on the cats tongue. It works
