This episode analyzes Led Zeppelin’s track, “Bring it on Home” a blues “sandwich” which closes the album
Led Zeppelin II from 1969. During the intro to this video I demonstrate the epic guitar riff and verse guitar
figures as three overdubs just like Jimmy Page played on the track: The main theme, the main theme
doubled with the harmony part, and the octave up version of the main theme. Disclosure: That is me
playing the guitar riffs live against a KZfaq backing track. I’m using my 1970/72 Les Paul into a Bogner
gain pedal into my Fender Deluxe Reverb Amp.
In this episode I discuss: 1. the origins of the blues track (Willie Dixon composer, Sony Boy Williamson II
recording artist; 2. The mindset of how to stay in the groove while playing the blues figure (it’s about a
train ride and you have to keep steadily chugging through the figure); 3. the great Jimmy Page riffs that sit
in between the blues bookends; 4. I compare the blues figure from Sonny Boy Williamson’s recording to
Led Zeppelin studio version through to my favorite Led Zeppelin live version (LA Forum Sept. 4, 1970 “Live
on Blueberry Hill”); 5. I also mention the greatest riff of all on this song is John Bonham’s opening double
snare hit! Has anyone ever said more with less musically?
This episode wraps up my journey through Led Zeppelin II. I have grown so much by bringing this
reassessment of this music from my childhood to you. I’m so in love with this material I plan to play this
album in local pubs live just to share it with people as soon as possible. From here I will pick some other
great artists to start analyzing. Please give me as many suggestions as you can. And, of course, please
like, subscribe and share this content. My ability to continue to present these videos requires the support
of my camera guy and editor (I’m no good at those things). Anything we can do to build a base here will
help me keep it going!
Stemming from my 40+ years as a professional musician and composer as well as being a passionate
musicologist, I bring a classical and historical perspective to my love of rock music by analyzing and
playing some of the most iconic music of all time. At the heart of all my videos is my enthusiasm, my thirst
for understanding and a gift for sharing the simple to sublime with others. Music and people are my life.
Whether you’re a guitar player, musician, songwriter or just a music enthusiast, I’m sure you will find
something in these videos to inspire you and make you smile.
If you like what you see, please like, subscribe, comment and share! It really makes a difference!
Also, give me some ideas for other songs you’d like me to dig into!

I remember reading Hammer Of The God's as a 9th grader. I am a drummer and ZEPPLIN was a butterfly that metaphorically grew into my life. Page was just a god like to me even as a little boy I could feel the machine drawing me to play hard and hit with attack. I still play drums and the little boy at 52 now still plows into ZEPPLIN. Amazing band....

Your knowledge of all the small, but ever so important details is pure gold. The detail about the droopy / delayed bend in the riff was exactly what I had been missing for two decades of playing guitar. Thanks a lot!

This track always blows me away. I love Robert's vocal delivery and harmonica in the first section, and then it winds up to be an absolutely blistering rock song. What a way to end such an amazing album. And Carl, you play it so well!! Thanks for the video man.

Once again Carl... You brought us another great installment of Zep!... I really have enjoyed this series because it got me into going back and learning some riffs and stuff I've forgotten or really didn't bother to sit my butt down and learn... I was never much into really learning "Other Peoples" music if you will.. I always had this fear of cross contaminating my playing style. But ultimately I got to understand you have to learn somewhere along the line.. And for me.. This was a great reminder.. Thank you again for this incredible insightful series.. ,,V

Thank you so much Carl. I’m from Sydney Australia and was about 14 years old when I got LZ2. I basically learned guitar by playing along with this album. Being so young and inexperienced I got a lot of the basics down but wasn’t able to get all the details. And the record wore out completely with all the needle juggling to try to hear details. I got a 68 les Paul custom when I was 15 and still have it today. I got to see LZ live in feb 73 in Sydney and it was the best show of my life so far. Your skill, experience, passion and insight is adding so much value to me I can’t thank you enough. Thank you, thank you, thank you……..

You’re very welcome! I’m glad the pick angle mindfulness helped you. There is so much to say on that. It’s important to recognize and allow yourself to continuously adjust the parameters to picking! There is NO “constant” at the molecular level. In fact my pick angle changes within that very riff to accommodate what’s necessary. If you’re stumbling trying to play something always check two things: the fingering and the picking (angles as well as motions -up/down etc). The problem is usually one or the other or both! Peace my friend!!

Hi Carl, I just found you and your channel and I just subscribed! Led Zeppelin II I found back in June of 1972 when I first saw them at the Nassau Coliseum at age 14… And like you I have been immersing myself in my favorite album of all time Led Zeppelin II going on nearly 50 years! I can’t wait to dig into all your videos you’re doing a fantastic job of not only describing the technical aspects but the brilliance of the music itself… Blueberry Hill is my first ever bootleg as well, for me it was in 1973 that I first heard it… And while the studio version of Bring It On Home blows me away every time I listen to it, the live version from Blueberry Hill has got its own bit of magic for sure!… Love that you’re touching on it here… One little thing I’m surprised that you did not mention though in this video. Yes the main riff is one of Jimmy‘s best of all time. But those double stop and triad chords things that he’s doing underneath Plants vocals are some of the most manic an amazing playing I’ve ever heard him do… And pure tone from the gods!… rock on 😊

I've been listening (well, I thought I'd been listening) to Led Zep II for 49 years, and yet I now hear so much more in the music thanks to your fascinating and inspiring presentations. Your joy for the music is infectious. Well, I can't wait to see where you're taking us next. I only know that you like Blackmore. So, will it be more Led Zep (no complaints from me). Or Blackmore? Or, perhaps, someone else? Mr Baldassarre, sir, I think that a man of your infinite class, taste and refinement just has to be a fan of both Steve Howe and David Gilmour.

Tony, first of all, thank you for the very kind words. I give it my all and I appreciate your acknowledgment. ...And yes, Howe and Gilmour are two exquisite guitar players! Although they have completely different approaches (like Page and all the true “greats”) they create their own unmistakable, sonic world that is immediately recognizable. Love them both!

I love your videos!! The level of care and detail you employ to go into these analyses is really wonderful to see and also learn from. One possible suggestion: I would love to listen to your videos analyzing each Zep album as a collection, so maybe consider putting, for example all of the Led Zeppelin II videos in a single playlist?

Yes, that live chunky intro is so great and single handedly demonstrates all one needs to know about the two creatures of Led Zeppelin studio vs Led Zeppelin live!! PS I’m auditioning vocalist in a couple of weeks for the zeppelin II local pub concerts I’m going to do! PS: I just signed on to do a North American tour next January - February. I’ll be playing my Collinwood Yards album across US and Canada.

great stuff...really enjoy your analysis & enthusiasm. I like playing the opening "chugging" riff with the side of my thumb tip...seems to add that fleshy fatness goodness to the sound.

Carl, Zeppelin II has been a great ride, first off Thank-You so much for putting in the time and work into this series. Appreciate and enjoy it very much. Secondly, will be looking forward to what comes next. Positive if it isn't a LZ album will still be a fabulous one. Tell anyone I know to check out your channel, don't do a whole lot of social media to tell the world. Was very happy with your pointing out the proper way Page does the harmony. A mistake I've heard many times and a pet peeve. Cheers my friend.

@@CarlBaldassarreMusic know exactly what you mean. Do find it refreshing looking/listening to these fabulous songs via someone else's eyes/ears. Said to someone recently, 'no matter how long you play the Guitar or listen to a song, you'll always hear and learn something new. Especially playing an instrument. There's many ways and variations to play the same bunch of notes. Don't ever think the journey is over and you have it figured out, that's when one stops learning'. This was after he told me he'd figured out the Zeppelin Catalog in a couple months and was moving on. Sigh!! So many reasons that is sad. Is it really learning to enjoy and understand? Or memorize how to play to say "ya I know that"? The journey has so much to enjoy along the way. Take care. Can hardly wait to see what's next.

I love your videos. So many of these reaction videos add nothing and get old quickly. Yours are great because you don't play the track that we have all heard a million times but instead give fabulous insights into how it was played and created. I would love to see you react to the complete 8/31/69 show as well as a Europe '73 show like 3/22/73 or 3/24/73 particularly the "Dazed and Confused" and "Whole Lotta Love" from those shows. Jimmy's playing is at its peak and the Bonham Page syncopation during the blues part of the "Whole Lotta Love" medley is always unique. And for more great Page moments, "Thank You" from 1/22/73 which has a particularly beautiful solo and very different than the 1970 "Thank You" solos and "No Quarter" from 2/12/75 which again has a particularly beautiful Page solo.

Cool video again, Carl, thank you. That's quite the journey! Regarding Willi Dixon and this song, I'm trying to dig up an old Jimmy Reed recording (I think it's on a CD packed away on a shelf) in which he delivered the lines: "Took a little walk down down, messed and got back late, find a note here waiting for me, said 'Daddy I just can't wait" I was gobsmacked because like every other Zep Head, I knew the estate of Willi Dixon won the copyright. I had no idea Plant had ransacked Jimmy Reed as well! On reflection it's not surprising, since Plant was a genuine blues fan and afficionado even at age 19. He would've soaked up that lyric like all the others: he was marinated in it. 😁

Mr. Baldassarre, what a tremendous series this has been! You're insights and analysis of this album have been educational and inspiring! After watching them, I just want to go and pickup my guitar and start playing! May I be so bold as to make a suggestion/recommendation? As big a fan as I am of Mr. Page and LZ, my reason for wanting to play guitar started in 1971, when I purchased the Humble Pie album "Humble Pie Performance Rockin' The Fillmore". Although I have a few players such as Mr. Page, Wes Montgomery, Kenny Burrell, Mark Farner, Alex Lifeson, Jeff Beck, Gary Moore and Peter Green that I consider as favorites, from that day on, Peter Frampton has been my overall favorite guitar player. It was his playing on that album that inspired me to play. His style was like nothing I had heard before or since for that matter, with his melodic approach mixed with jazz. I would love for you to analyze and hear your thoughts on his playing. Cheers, MB
