Carli Ball Joint Review | Worth It for Your Cummins?

After ‪@thecarlisuspension‬ updated their extreme duty Ram ball joints for the 03-12 Cummins Dodge Ram platforms, and after getting an early shot at testing them I wanted to share my thoughts. $800 is not small amount for a set of ball joints, but you get a lifetime guarantee, metal on metal design and top of the line steering feel. Hopefully this review helps anyone trying to decide if these ball joints are worth it for them! After trying more than a few other options, I think they are worth what I paid for them- especially in my use case.

Back in 2013 I installed a set of Carli ball joints on my 2006 Ram 2500 so almost 10 years and over 90k miles they’re still going tight. I grease them at every oil change interval and check for any play and so far so good!! 👍

During a restoration/upgrade of my 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins diesel truck, I chose to install these Carli ball joints. It was the top recommended ball joint from many 4x4 truck retailers and you can find plenty of rave reviews on the web. Almost everyone raves about the lifetime warranty. Has anyone had to actually request a warranty claim? I did and my experience was horrible. When I started seeing the tell tale signs of ball joint wear, I had my mechanic verify the ball joints were failing. I requested replacement ball joints and Carli stated the ball joints had to meet a certain play requirements to verify the ball joints were worn. Unfortunately, I had already replaced the ball joints with a different brand. Through multiple emails and conversations, Carli assured me the ball joints were not bad and did not meet the requirements for replacement. They needed video evidence of the ball joint play while installed. So I had them reinstalled and I installed a new front end kit to make sure that wasn’t the problem. Sure enough, the wandering came back. I videoed the play in the ball joints and sent it to Carli. Their response was the ball joints still aren’t replaceable because the play wasn’t “large enough” for their specs. The play in the joints were significant enough for the shop to tell me they have to be replaced. So I replaced them and Carli still won’t send me replacement ball joints. So if you think you’re getting a lifetime warranty with Carli, you really aren’t. Know you’re getting good ball joints that’ll last about 40-50,00 miles but that’s it. They don’t stand behind the lifetime warranty.

After contemplating for some time on which ball joints to choose, I went with the Carli ball joints for the lifetime warranty. I appreciate the review, I haven't installed mine yet but that's the next project. I Hope they last a long time.

Hey hey......late to the party on this one. Great video follow up to the Carli vid on the joints. I have an '03 - 3rd gen I bought new. 150K on the clock now. USE the heck out of the truck off road with a light camper. Kore-Carli-Thuren 3 inch VR suspension of my own mix. CTD, Manual, 4:11's from the factory, 37x11.50's on stock wheels (the new Nitto Recon Grappler). My 4th set of 37's in 15 years, no issues. Factory LSD rear, NO power mods....all stock. It all works well. Albeit...injectors last year. Anyway......just subbed to the channel, you have lots of cool info I want to digest. To the joints. Yeah, on set #2 that are smoked. I've had some Moog's on standby on the shelf. Was checking some vids on R&R to make sure I had what I needed getting ready for the change out, and started researching joints. I knew of the Carli's, and saw the updated unit vid, then your vid. hmmmm..... Yes pricy, but so is everything that is quality, as well as my time. I'm thinking of biting the bullet and just going Carli joints and sell my Moogs somehow. Do the job one---last---time.... and wheel bearings, pre-emptive, just because 150K. The day I bought it in 2003, I knew it was my forever truck, and still love it. I can imagine ever paying what they want these days for new vehicles. And the stroke of luck for what these 3rd gens are in simplicity. Peace !

Carli Joints In ! A little bit of a tear down to install, so I did wheel bearings and fresh u-joints at the outer axels. Instructions were good and seemed like a straight forward job with just a couple Carli specific procedures that were easy.

Although its great with regards to the life-time warranty,....if your Carli joints wear out or end up with tolerances that aren't acceptable down the road, (unfortunately they do at times) guess what?? Your pressing them out and pressing in the warranty joints. To me that's not a selling feature, its EMF for me, last time pressing in ball joints, extremely easy to adjust or re-build (if needed), while staying in the truck. AND I'm biased, they are CANADIAN MADE. They are in my truck now, and the improved quality of steering is excellent, I am also running the Synergy HD steering and a Carli trackbar. I'm not bashing on Carli joints, in my opinion, EMF doesn't boast about their warranty, they don't need to, its their quality that sells. They aren't "just an entry level ball joint".

Same here! Haven’t installed them yet but EMF is the best choice for ball joints I think. Carli is a great joint but they are gonna go bad at some point. It’s inevitable. EMF is basically one and done never press in joints again. Too easy to rebuild on the truck

My 2012 ram 2500 has 160k on it, at 70k I had BDS 3.5" lift kit installed at Absolute auto in PA, at same time I had all joints swapped out for MOOG joints. So for last four years and 40k miles I'm on rough Alaska roads, just making sure to grease them every 3 months and they are still feel as they were 90.00 miles ago.

Do they fit in stretched holes? I did ball joints on my 06 s couple years ago, I got moog problem solvers at first but I could push them in and out of the holes with my hands so I had to go with NAPA brand because they were slightly bigger.

Having trouble finding somebody to install these correctly. Three shops 5 sets of moogs in the past 2 years. Say these are junk and won’t fit.. kinda feel stuck paying 1,500 everytime I go for a tire rotation. Anyone know of a shop in Montana that does these?
@KRich408
@KRich408 Жыл бұрын
I don't most shops won't let customers bring in their own parts. I do know a shop that lets customers bring certain parts on occasion in Sturgis SD . Now if they install them right is another thing? They do good work but they also forgot to do a balljoint when I had them rebuild the front of my RAM 2500 . They did warranty it out not wanting to admit they forgot. I never said I saw it was never replaced. Probably an innocent mistake it happens . Let me know if you want their information I don't know how far from Sturgis you are.

Ok I'm calling you out on something you said. They are designed to Last the life of the truck! They are different because the others have wear surfaces in them, they are lifetime if you have an issue then send a video of the premature wear to Carli. This is the same terminology all other brands use Premature wear is covered but normal wear is not. At almost $1000.00 I don't want to hear premature wear in a warranty . If they say that if they wear out for "Any Reason while you own the truck they will be replaced free of charge! " That's a true lifetime warranty.
@JustDiesels
@JustDiesels Жыл бұрын
That’s the warranty. If they have out of spec play, the send you a new set. It doesn’t matter if it happens at 10 miles or 300k. Sorry that wasn’t clear!

You can tell the difference between a company who will honor a lifetime warranty and one that won't pretty easily. These guys are US locals and are at the top of their game. It wouldn't take too many reports of "they screwed me" or "they didn't honor the warranty" to tank their company. And with less than 1% of their product coming back in for warranty replacement they are not losing money on that lifetime warranty offering guaranteed. OEM were going to cost $600 from my RAM dealer for parts only. These were less than $900 for the RAM 3500 using the Veteran's 5% discount, free shipping and no sales tax when purchased out of state. I'll pay $300 more for these and save myself the trip back through the front end of the vehicle to replacve them again in 50 to 100k personally. Minimum labor cost in Houston is $550 at our shade-tree locations. Average is $1000 labor and the local Stealership wanted over $1500 labor for OEM install parts ($600 more). Took 2 hours to strip everything out down to the ball joints so far and should be 4 hours for a DIY first timer to put it all back together after I press these out using Harbor Freight tools on everything. My 2 cents
