RM199k for 199km range: How the Mazda MX-30 won me over

The MX-30 has a pretty obvious fatal flaw - a too-small battery. But Mazda had developed it deliberately around that limitation, and within that frame it’s an epic thing. Drives wonderful, funky looks, and even an interior to put some Porsches to shame.
It can’t do everything, but it’s so freaking likeable.

I love it, it's my main car (and I live in Sweden). The thing is, I come from a small car which where a combustion engine, and it could take me to another country near by, but how many times do I travel that far? 1 time a year. Most of the time I commute to work, and the local cities and grocery stores. For that - it's absolutely unbeatable. The comfort in this car is NEXT GEN. People always complain about the range, but never even use that range in daily use. And Mazda MX 30 has ONE big party-trick that NO ONE talks about, and that is that within the city if you drive slow-city speeds... you don't have to charge FOR WEEKS! It's crazy low-power usage within the cities, when I go to the store, it literally says the same KMh range as it did when I went, every day! TRY THAT with a Combustion engine, or an EV that has tons of battery power (Huge battery, weights a lot!)

Awesome you mentioned that. This is the car I want, I live in Finland, not very big city and I see myself using it perfectly.

@@MrChristocentric You will probably be quite happy with it. I mean... for the price, it's above a 100K class in just pure comfort and luxury, people who haven't tried it over some period of time, have NO clue who this was made for, and I can tell you...I'm not switching back.

@@joonglegamer9898 yeah, he literally compared to Taycan which is 100k and above. Insane when you think about it. And I think they did a good move by lowering the price because of a smaller battery.

I love mine, had it for a month. Not phased by the 2 doors, I rarely have a full car. Not many of them here in NZ either so it's nice to have one, I've got the hybrid version ❤

It's amazing how you mentioned Taycan in this. Because they are both made by car enthusiasts.

Thank you, I have had one since mid- October, 2023. My experience is one of great satisfaction in terms of driving, comfort and transporting my Atto super mobility scooter. The lease deal was very favourable, certainly compared to others I looked at. My driving over 12 months amounts to no more than 5,000 miles. My criticisms relate to those doors. Gimmick rather than practical and access to the rear.

I evaluated MX30 EV for a 3-week period. Every day i loved it more. Yes, the range is low. But it is a refined car. You hit the nail on the head. Its hard not to dislike it. My sister bought the M-Hybrid, but was mainly spending cost as she was retired, distance per day was OK for the EV. Charge at home each day with the Solor roof and cost wise it suits a demographic! Great review.

I got mine for 3 weeks already. Love it. The range is not a worry if you live in a city. So many charging stations. The low cost of charging beats petrol $ anytime.

Not here in the UK if you have to use public chargers. Diesel is still better.

This is the vehicle I would choose. But still it will cost me $15k extra. But you get quality plus and reliability. I have a Mitsubishi I-miev. It's 12 years old. One cell, that's right just one cell dropped. And that's all you need in any ev to bring the rest down. It has only ever been recharged from a normal 240 volt household socket (Australia). I was getting over 100 Kms range (16.5kw) battery. I can put a new 30kw battery in it. But the cost is way up there. But the range goes up to 250 Kms easy. Some say 270kms. I know that's more than enough for me here in Sydney. So it's a choice. Sell it with a few new cells and use that money and the money I would pay for the new battery plus another $15,000 and buy a new EV. But here's the thing. Most cars depreciate at $100 per week or more. But the i-miev is already depreciated to its maximum. So the depreciation would be just the battery now. That's about $25 per week over the next 10 years. So is it a good idea for people to buy a used EV cheap and put a new battery in it. Because you are saving at least $75 per week. That's over 300% saving. This never dawns on anyone on the internet making KZfaq vids etc. Nobody at all. Anywhere. But I have. Why is it just me that thinks of this. Or am I wrong somewhere. Plus it will save a lot of EVs ending up on the scrap heap. And it's good for the environment. Not that many people care about the environment it seem these days. Particularly here in Australia. What do you think?

Wow, a Mitsubishi i-MiEV. Hats off to you as one of the early adopters. Honestly, you've got a great point. EVs need to have some standardised mechanism to enable relatively simple battery replacements. If they're completely sealed-in, requiring the full replacement of the vehicle, that would be the opposite of environmental friendly. Nio (of China) had an ambitious plan to make all their EVs capable of easy battery swap support, so that you could roll up to a battery change station instead of a charging station. Drop in a fully charged battery in 5 mins. Haven't heard much from them about this tech in a while, though. Not sure if they've backtracked, which would be a shame. They had the right idea.

The primary use case of the mx 30 is not to be a secondary car, but its use case is to meet California regulations

In Canada (Quebec), the price for a 2023 MX-30 GS is 44,500$ + taxes. After that, you take 12,000$ off the price (credit from provincial & federal governments) and then, another 4,000$ off the price (Mazda rebate). So the final price is 35,100$ taxes included. Yes it has a lower range than the others in the same class (Kona, Soul, Bolt, Leaf etc...) but also has a lower price. I won't use the car in winter time as my wife has an AWD vehicle. I rarely drive more than 80 km/day (running errands) and will be using it from may 01 to october 31. BTW, I've done more than 180 km with 15% left. I must say that I'm a pretty smooth driver and I drive usually no more than 10-15 km/h over the posted speed limit. 😁 If it was my only vehicle, I would have bought a Bolt EUV with 460 km range (more than 12 months for delivery) !!! 😕

Sounds like you're a satisfied owner. EVs are pretty great as around-town cars, and that's exactly what Mazda wanted the MX-30 to be

This car is so expensive cars in this same price range get close to 300 miles range. In cold weather it will be about 60 mile range. This will be half priced used in 2 years.
