To run the numbers we want with our Drag Challenge ute we need to make some pretty serious horsepower. So we're building up a twin turbo 427ci engine to go in the Ute.
Street Machine Carnage is all about having fun with cars. Sometimes it's serious performance, sometimes it's crazy fun, but it always interesting and done on a budget.

Scotty I just have to say when COVID hit and we were all locked down and not able to go anywhere, my mental health tanked badly. I discovered your channel and I have been watching ever since. You were my escape to the world, to some normality, to be able to get out virtually at least by watching. And here we are afterwards in a kind of normal world and your videos go from strength to strength. You really don't know how much your channel has meant to me over the past 3 years. EDIT Receiver grooves cut on the heads? There needs somewhere for the hump in the copper head gasket made by the ring ring to go so the rest of the head isn't held off the gasket. This will lead to a water leak and loss of head bolt tension as the fire ring slowly cuts through the copper . Steve Morris did a vid on this ( EDIT ) Found it Sealing in the Boost with Hoops Steve Morris Engines

Found it Sealing in the Boost with Hoops Steve Morris Engines
@seanb250
@seanb250 8 ай бұрын
Scotty, airspeed doesn’t change when boosted, only the density of the charge, port sizing should be near on the same as a NA engine for the cubic capacity and rpm target, you can make them slightly larger when running very high boost to manage airspeed with the extra mass and it’s inertia, generally that’s 30+ pounds of boost at under 100 degree air temp.
@STREETMACHINETV
@STREETMACHINETV 8 ай бұрын
I know what I meant but probably didn't explain it well. The point I was trying to make was big ports on boosted engines aren't going to hurt you like a big port might on the wrong size NA engine would.

427 should do 1000 rwhp easy as pie, pending turbos 15-17 psi. Probably going to need some bigger breathers off the rocker covers to let her breath Also its usually a trans issue if convertor is being pushed forward and pushing crank into block. Trans needs a restrictor to lower pressure.
@STREETMACHINETV
@STREETMACHINETV 8 ай бұрын
Yep, should do it easy, and yeah it's a good point regarding breathers on the covers. I'll probably change the covers completely. On the trans thing, I'd rather have the insurance than wait for a "will it or won't it" moment.

Love your content Scott, you always keep it real.!! I hope I don't come across as a wa'#ker but you keep mentioning 1000hp. I would think that this combo should be aiming at 2000whp mark as a minimum especially when guys like Auto Perfection have achieved 1100+whp from their little (Street driven) K24 Honda and there's multiple 1000+whp evos and other 4 and 6 cylinder cars making around and over that mark with less than 1/2 the cubic capacity. I understand you might be shouldering more of the work load and might be less experienced or feeling your way at this level which may be the cause of the conservative target figures. Good luck mate. I'm looking forward to seeing how you go. 👍👍💪💪

has the bottom end been balanced ? thats a $1500 episode the current price of Mallory at $150 a slug and could take 3 or 4 of those thats what it cost me similar to yours but I'm going with Manley rods, lunati sig crank, and JE pistons, I'm going to be going with at higher static compression, then you have all the crap thats hangs off the engine, those headers are pretty much useless I tried them on my VE wouldnt clear the power steering pump an alternator I guess those tanks the Americans drive they got the room I got a 1 7/8 header kit, I'm going with a big single Turbo you should use ARP main studs on a turbo ls, I've spent $46k on engine parts alone by the time it hits the engine mounts ill be into the $60k mark I didn't get mine for free lol , fuel system is the place that guys overlook I went with Aeromotive pump, reg, using 220lb injectors its capable of running 90psi with -10 I'm running a 10lt fuel cell for a surge tank so I'm busting to see your build as you'll be going before me when I researched my build I couldn't find anyone in OZ who actually had a clue about a 1500-2000hp LS I went to the US for that those guys are way ahead of us for LS and coyotes, these days 1000hp isn't that hard guys with Barras do that which you know that from your barra

Attention to detail, you're taking the piss right? I would be absolutely livid if Dandy Engines did that to my crank and block. They have taken a crank journal that had a nice mirror polished fillet on it, and given you back a roughly cut square edge in both the block and the crank. They have reduced reliability, not increased it. I hope for your sake the harmonic balancer can save it from cracks. I'm not blaming you for this, all you can do is trust the machine shop to do their job right, but they have dropped the ball big time.

I guess we'll see how it goes. If it snaps at that point, you can say "I told you so"

@@STREETMACHINETV I hope to hell I am wrong. I never want to see anyone's engine fail, but you have to call out shit work when you see it. I have a bit of experience with blown engines making in excess of 1000hp. I would be checking it for micro cracks whenever you have it pulled apart. I'd be doing that regardless... You're talking a horsepower level where that becomes an issue on boosted applications.

The needle thrust bearing has a hardened washer on each side of the needles. These washers contact the cam and crank. Given this is a turbo motor, there is very little bending moment on the snout of the crank. If this was a blower / supercharger driven from the crank Via a belt, the crank groove might be a problem.

@DodgyBrothersEngineering I understand the concern

@@bobroberts2371 I agree to a point. While the blower does produce additional load, and therefore additional resistance to twist, I don't think it is the greatest influence on the problem. The lack of a harmonic balancer is likely to be a greater area of concern. The blower load is constant i.e. the toothed belt is the same all the way around, the rotors have a uniform angle of twist, and air / fuel is a constant (well it's not but close enough for this example). So once the slack is taken out of the belt the load while varying is fairly constant. The irregular cylinder firing dictated by the firing order is the greatest source of irregular load on the crank journals, as it has the greatest leverage on the crank courtesy of the stroke, which is a twist multiplier. The more boost / power the greater that shock load is going to be. I just hope that it being the front journal and close to the harmonic balancer that it can do it's job effectively. Clearly Scotty won't be using some cheap shit Chinese balancer on an engine like this, but I sometimes think that these kinds of machine jobs should be handled by a proper machine shop instead of a performance shop where the person doing the job may not necessarily have the required engineering skill. From what you can see on the video even using a 17" laptop screen I can see ripple marks where they have attempted to not undercut the journal size. How hard would it have been to have switched the diamond shape cutter to one with more radius towards the final passes. That is not quality machine work. You can also see that they have tried to linish the journal afterwards to make it look smoother. This is evident by the dull look on the journal face, the quality of which is also poor, they should have finished with a much higher grit count. And yes I have linished crankshafts myself, back when I worked at Superformance in the late 80's/ 90's, so I know what it should look like.
