Hi, Everybody -
It's time for another archetype video. And this week, we are doing the indentured servant, an archetype not often thought of. And then, when I mention it in a class, people say that's me. So I'm going to describe it.
But first, I'm going into a bit of its history and more of an impersonal view of indentured servitude. Its history goes back to the United States, shortly after the Jamestown Colony in Virginia was established in 1619. And while the indentured servant includes the idea of serving, it is forced service. Indentured means I am contracted here, and so I must stay.

OMG! I never realized that I’m an indented servant! My husband was diagnosed with early Alzheimer’s, my soul would not leave him, even when I feel I can’t continue… it makes sense, it is a soul contract! I don’t have a date to end the contract, not even know if I’ll still be alive, I’m 73 and have cancer…. I need to pray for the grace of strength and believe that guidance will come as needed… Thanks Caroline for your light!

As a woman, I believe I understand my journey with this. I get that intuition alot when it's time to go and change my thoughts and reality. I definitely go to the roads less traveled, looking for signs along the way. What an adventure. I have had a long career in medicine, but have walked away from several employers that made me feel trapped. I continue to give to others; human, animal, and the Earth as I feel the guidance. It is so freeing. Thank you for explaining that mindset archetype.

Indentured servitude was very common among the Chinese, Irish, and other ethnicities who came during the late 1800 and through the 1900's. they worked in the mines, restaurants, factories, and as servants and maids. Those who brought them were called their' sponsors'. My Chinese immigrant father in law was sponsored at 16 years old, brought on a ship and worked for 5 years in a restaurant in San Francisco. My Irish grandfather was brought to work in the mines in Montana. This is still happening in some businesses to this day. Restaurants that bring workers and house them, Houses full of women sewing day and night, - people trapped and working with complete dependence still exist unfortunately.

My Grandmother was indentured as a maid at age 16. I think it followed into me as I took care of both my parents. My Grandmother was blessed to have a kind lady she was indentured to that sent her to nursing school

This was a really interesting archetype. I have been an indentured servant to my mom since the age of 6. Now she is in her elder years and I have seen more of the idea of that contract as you described being a reality. Many have asked me why I have never leaved my city and without a doubt, I say that I feel obligated to care for my mother and to be close to her I that way. Putting it in the perspective of a contract does change your perception of something being temporary and preordained by God. Thank you for giving a voice to that.

Thank you as always Caroline for your wise words about the Archetypes! This was a good one, very relevant, and certainly covert in modern times. I feel personally the normalization of Toxic Co-dependency is related to the Indentured Servant Archetype. Co-dependency is what prevents people from listening to their intuition and moving on from a relationship, marriage, or job that no longer serves them. Thank you as well for reminding us all of our modern luxuries and privilege to Spiritually evolve! 🙏

Interesting how The Indentured Servant works with the Martyr, at least in my experience! I am willing to look at both and of using my power of choice, although it’s pretty amazing how hard it can be. Especially when those around us are busy making us feel obligated and guilty to honour those roles (for their benefit). Thanks for a wonderful way of thinking about this.

This is really good. The cosmos packed into one topic & exploding in light. Aristotle envisioned a future when machines would do the work that slaves were doing then, & this way, "all men" could have the time & sustenance to be philosophers. If wisdom had been everyone's goal, thru the industrial age & the Koch type age of self, this vision of purposeful sacred leisure could be at hand now. I'm trying to heed this sombering situation & praying to do what God directs, as we are here with any freedom at the cost of many others who had little freedom, scant food, cold winters & much service. Thank you for keeping us aware & not despairing.

I'm wondering what Carolyn would have to say about people who work in a service sector of society because they're forced to work for a living? No spousal support,. no family money etc...maybe the only difference is, there is no time limit on a contract for those folks, they're in it for life.

I worry about people in the service industry who never make enough money and have no time for school or training to get a better job. They don’t have vacations and may have children to feed. They are at the mercy of an inhumane company. It’s a kind of slavery.

I feel that there is more to this and maybe Carolyn can tell us. I was born into a prosperous family, but always identified with a few people who worked for us, like the housecleaner. I was embarrassed that we had help. I obeyed my mother as a servant. I was given an education but as a woman, expected to become a housewife. I chose another path and became a college professor where I was always trying to prove myself. But I always had the idea that I had to serve my selfish mother. I got married and kept teaching. Later I helped my mother till she died at 99. My point is that I have always been an indentured servant. It’s my identity - to serve. I’m not a martyr. How did I get stuck with this?

@@lillianbarker4292 I think Carolyn did say that when service is not forced, but freely chosen, it is not the same archtype. Many vocations are in the field of service. Perhaps it comes down to why we are doing service - and if we feel we have freely chosen it, or if it is somehow imposed upon us.

I feel this is me and I tried to escape for 3 years trying to make it on my own through various means but consistently failed due to lack of focus and self confidence. Perhaps there’s a destined time for freedom and not before.

I have this archetype as well as the Damsel. The Damsel and the servant were very connected. This servant for me, became one of service by choice instead of the indentured servant.we all must carry our own cross to rise beyond.

Indentured Servant Archetype is way older & deeper as well. It is the ENERGY of the Greek myth, Sisyphus who was condemned to roll a rock up to the top of a mountain, only to have the rock roll back down to the bottom every time he reaches the top. But! Sisyphus cheated death twice ❤

I never heard of the word indenture. I thought it was someone who has no denture . And I’m like, why is Caroline archetype this week about people with no teeth ? 😆 But it turn out to be one of my favorites. Indentured servants was very popular when people first came to America. They came as indentured to pay off the fees for transport to America.

In digging into my family history I came to reading about the Filles du Roi (The king's daughters) that the king of France sent over "marriageable girls" in the mid 1600s to help populate New France. It's no wonder this runs in our family lines. So far I've found 6 of my great ++ grandmothers on that list. ❤️

I had to hold on but I got it in the end and it's a very valuable video again, thank you so much for committing to this series! I love it so much 💝 I was only wondering actually, I feel like you have been talking about codependency and/or attachment issues: I can't leave this situation because I need ... the money/the affection/the confirmation/anything else. So I often asked myself, where is the archetype and not just the dysfunctional pattern? In general, an archetype has light attributes as well as shadow attributes. I haven't really been able to identify the light attributes through this video I'm afraid. While I was pondering on the answer, I was very happy to find the card of the Servant in my deck which was very clarifying to me: - light attribute: delight in serving others with a free and living heart - shadow attribute: using the lack of money as an excuse not to move forward with life I'm adding this comment in case anyone might have a similar question. Yet, as I observe your publications on the matter from the past and how you evolved, worked trough and explored archetypes throughout your life, I am so amazed and grateful! Keep going please, what a wonderful gift you're offering to the world 🎁 Thank you! 🙏🙏

I love my life, mostly, and love my husband, mostly, he is 12 yrs my senior. I have taken hood care of us. I only dream of being free and single to pursue what life and dreams are still in me at almost 71. I gave up. I cannot think too much of "me" > I want a calm loving nest, I grew up in f'n chaos and a family w the majority of adults with a low moral code. So, I don't fly the coup. I just stay because it's safe and I do love him. Somehow I identify with this archetype and others. I love your channel ❤😊 sticking-it-out ain't so bad.

Both Tess (constantly), and Angel (when trying to farm in South America) in Tess of the D'urbervilles embody this archetype perfectly. I've been living shades of this archetype for years myself, working with a difficult illness to support a family on my own. Protests abound naturally, now I'm setting out that this is happening no longer, as I definitely went to far with it, and children enjoy that status quo, of the mum that becomes tantamount to a multipurpose kitchen appliance!

The first thing that comes to my mind is multiple generations in America becoming an indentured servant to their student loan debt. Some people are doing unthinkable things, feeling forced to live in a way they do not want, many putting off or never experiencing the normal parts of life, marriage, home ownership, having a child, etc. It's really appalling and not discussed enough.

Caroline you are the one who called me this week. I am finnished with my slavery where i wass stuck in and thought i could not move without this and that consequences. Yes i wass forced to be in a kind off role wich is not mine at all. And i told myself that it was out of love to be like this. Serving was forced and it was covert that there was a manipulation and emotional abuse going on. I knew this but it took a long time to put my finger on the point. In fact when i should point it out i had fear for kicked out. And to loose everything i thought i had for sure. Love, and safety. But i forgot that my freedom is the most important value in live. Not love or safety but freedom is the first need in a human source. And from that it will be safe to love and to be loved. In fact there was already someone else who took over de devotion and stood in my place without i even knew or was told. Everybody around knew, exept me. A friend just said to me, you escaped just on time the port of hell. And all of this was in your call. Yes i did need to do this. It lined up with my soul. Thank you so much, you saved me for devaluation of myself .

Hi Caroline, love your teaching and following you for years I just did a major, major disengagement. Is it common to have guilt with this and how do I deal with it? i’m sure I know the answer, otherwise I wouldn’t of done it however, I just want to hear it!!!L O L blessings to all.

I met a man with Parkinsons, his wife left after diagnosis and they had 3 kids. We got together and I took care of him and then his ex wife dropped 3 kids off for pretty much full time. And I would have taken care of all of them for the rest of my life, but it became very clear that they were sucking my life force and watching me burn out and ignoring my distress. This went on for 3 years and I barely got away with my life, and I'm still not really ok. I'm energetically attacked as if I was the wife who was bound.

Very excellent message thank you. Really if we want out of anything that's the only reason you need for severability. Consent/willingness is required for a thing to bee legally enforceable so in other words there's no enforceability at all under the true laws in the USA. That's the whole purpose of it. If you believe something else it's a lie. Leap of faith required. You cannot have two masters.

Many of your examples of "indenture-hood" I've experienced. But I'm curious: what about contracting into a body with genetic mutations? A family of people with same genetic mutations? Are we indentured to a body that prevents one from living a free life?

Could you say we are all indentured servants through the taxation system and because they’re not telling you the truth about money loans, and mortgages could that be called indentured servitude❓ We are all a commodity through our birth certificate and our national insurance numbers that are allotted to us with our birth certificate.
