What I admire the most about her is her doing her own thing in her mid-30s. It says a lot about the culture that 30s is 'too old' for a lot of people. Why should more life experience be a hindrance in any way?

As someone in his late 30's, it makes me so happy that new music that completely sweeps me off my feet doesnt necessarily need to be created from someone in their twenties.
@morgenlefay

It’s sad when someone’s age is the main thing people are saying about anyone…when a scientist makes a breakthrough nobody talks about their age unless they’re ridiculously young (in their teens) which is atypical. If age or dating is all anyone has to say about you, your contributions to the world probably don’t matter as much as it’s hyped to seem. An illusory bubble. This much is proven when on twitter, something with as little as 1.5k tweets is “trending” & blown out the wazoo as if it’s the center of the world. Or fashion magazines mostly nobody reads are posited as the center of some ‘cool world’ everyone should aspire to & everyone is on the outside looking in. Obsolete societies.

She is spot on about Dido and her "comforting presence". Something Dido always captured really well was this sort of quiet melancholy or sadness. Her music was somber and oftentimes sad, but it was never overwrought or melodramatic. It was just this quiet stillness that was still warm and comforting. And that really resonated with me as a depressed teenager and still resonates with me as I near my 30s.

@@o0alias0o I get that she doesn't want to boxed in (which mind you is a pretty common view of many artists) by it doesn't mean that she isn't appealing to it. Her take seemed pretty hipster to me, like claiming that you can't be defined by genres and that you never think about it but like lets be real her individual stuff and chairlift were both pop music of some kind, maybe not the same, but still pop (dream pop, indie pop etc). Also like as the interviewer was saying many artists would make the same claim so it wasn't weird for him to ask about it despite her hostile approach.

Genres actually exist and stem from journalism, specifically reviewing performances and then having to write about it, it was extremely hard to expound to a reader what you saw last night at a club or bar without the advent of the internet so that they get an idea of what the music is like while reading words. Once you say a band plays rock or punk it gives the reader a starting point.
