I know it's a bit late but I think I see why it's not working right. The harness support is too high for your dog. We have to remember Newton's third law of motion. The action force extruded by the dog is causing a reaction force of roughly 80% up and 20% back (not actual calculations, just my best guess). Lowering the bar by a foot or so should help flip those numbers. I'm guessing your setup works just fine otherwise! :) Hope that helps! By the way, that is one adorable puppy!

I’ve actually build a carpet mill and the right type of carpet to use is stairs carpet or runner carpet the type they sell at Home Depot and then add caulking on the entire carpet so it last longer .

How do you add the caulking?

@@rosemaryball7560 you use a caulking gun and spread it on the carpet with a piece of wood and press it into the carpet then let it dry for 24 hours. After a while it falls off but it makes the carpet last longer.

Good work! I'm about to build one. What I think the issue with yours was the carpet was dragging on the floor, the rollers weren't centered and I think Obie needs sides so that he can only move forward but if he's tied off it'll only move the carpet and he won't be able to jump off. Hope to see an update how Obie likes it now.

Hey there, the pvc pipes do rotate with the carpet. The nails rotate inside the copper tubing.

my dog is just very reactive to other dogs and people so I really cant take him outside, I want to make one of these so he can still get exercise indoors where hes not barking at people or other dogs

They make an iron on carpet seam tape that you put on underneath. What do the job you were trying to accomplish perfectly.

I’m conflicted on either trying to build this or just spend the $500 to buy one. Either way my dogs energy never wears out and yes my yard looks like that. As do my floors 🥲

It sounds like there's just way too much friction on the "whiteboard." I'm going to be making one of these to save me $900 with a Dog Trotter, but I'm going to use wood, and then put pvc pool liner on top, hopefully make the deck have less friction and kind of "skate" across it.

@@abbyb485 I used PVC pool liner, I got it from some scraps at a local pool installation business. Not sure where you can get it, maybe at Lowes? Or something like that. It comes in a roll.

Great question. Absolutely! You just scale down your build. Start by measuring the length of your pup, then go from there. Maybe add some oil between your board and carpet to allow for easier sliding with less force. Good luck!

Silicone lubricant spray would make the carpet slide better without making things greasy

The landscape timbers are a lot of extra weight and are out of balance. Why not just use schedule 40 PVC caps??????

The tension of the carpet should alone hold the dogs weight up, not the board between the rollers. The dog should not easily be able to stand on the mill without it rolling

There are some dogs (high drive working breeds) you just can't walk or run enough and some places that the weather won't let you. My GSD and Mal never stop, even with backpacks.

Without imaginative thinking, basic engineering, understanding the three basic physic machines, we would be living in an open area, no homes, no fire, no food and no ability to learn, adapt or overcome anything. Praise those that do something and share about it through their experiences because it gives you the ability to complain about it. What have to go to bring to the table other than an emotional response driven comment?
