We are back out on the winter hiking again folks. Took a trip up to Carr Mountain with... a new car. Ended up getting rid of the camper van to pickup something much more capable in the winter weather. I have been quite annoyed of having to pretty much avoid winter hiking the last few years due to issues with getting around on snowy roads and into snowy parking lots. So the van is gone, and I purchased up a new 2023 Subaru Forester.
As for the hike, it was just under 7 miles with about 2200 ft of elevation gain. I went up from the Three Ponds Trail side and took the Three Ponds Trail to the Carr Mountain Trail, then retraced back down. Overall a fun hike, the elevation felt very manageable, and with the help of a shared snow mobile trail, made it so I didnt have to pack down the whole 3 miles on the Carr Mountain Trail in my snowshoes alone.

Gear, clothing, footwear, etc. are not one style works for all. Do as much research as you can, try out things in person if able, and make the best informed purchase decision for YOU. Do not buy gear just because it worked for, was showcased by, or recommended by someone on KZfaq

During the pandemic I was leaving trail and summit names out of many of my videos due to issues with massive overcrowding on the trail, as well as, issues in regards to what I would consider uneducated or irresponsible hiker behavior. The most notable of which was trash, and human waste / toilet paper I was finding directly on, or just off, trail. I kept some of the trail and location names in this video.If you are using this video for planning purposes, please use the trail responsibly and try to follow leave no trace principles. It only takes one person not doing so to ruin it for everyone. If you are a newer hiker please watch this video before heading out on trail: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ms6Uaqhl162tp3U.html Here is an article about the issue with trash and human waste specifically in the Whites www.nhpr.org/post/trouble-trails-forest-service-grapples-crowds-trash-and-human-waste#stream/0 Another article about Max Patch (an iconic part of the Appalachian Trail) and the issues occurring there www.citizen-times.com/story/news/local/2020/09/23/max-patch-residents-campers-creating-safety-hazards-mountain/5858936002/ Here you can learn about leave no trace (LNT) principles lnt.org/why/7-principles/ www.nps.gov/articles/leave-no-trace-seven-principles.htm

So happy to see you. We love your videos, and Mt.Carr looks beautiful. I agree with the comment about the horrors of people littering. One of the downfalls of social media is people who only want to post to Instagram and not care about the beauty of nature. I wish they would stay home. I go nuts when I see garbage on a trail; I cannot understand it.

It's great to see that even with the snowy conditions, you still managed to have an amazing hike. I can't wait to plan my own winter hike in the White Mountains after watching your video. Carr mountain has a good ratio of isolation to driving time (if you're coming from south of the Whites). One of my favorites for escaping to the woods

I bought a 4WD Subaru with a 5 speed stick in NH when we lived there and got almost 250,000 miles out of it so you should be good for a while! Yup, that parking lot looked like a crampon caller. Lucky you that the snowmobile went as far as it did. It was still nice at the top. Thanks for the great video. John from MI

There’s a stealth camping site over the hump about 20 yards behind the old tower foundation. Very cool spot however I’m unsure if you can legally camp there.

Hey bud! Just checking in to see if you are still doing youtube vids? I just got back from an attempt on a trip up stratton in VT and was immediately stopped by 18” of hard pack ice with water flowing underneath 😬. Just stayed at one of the local campgrounds and did dayhikes the next day and went home. Really miss your mellow take on backpacking trips. Hope you’re well and tske care. NQU

Ya its disappointing, I thought about buying like an early 2000s awd or 4wd to just beat on in winter, but the used prices are still grossly high, and the thought of having, parking, insuring, and maintaining 2 vehicles made it a much easier call to just move on

Great to see ya back and congrats on the new vehicle! Hopefully its covering all the bases for ya. Have you scoped out the back for a sleeping setup yet or is it just not an option? The hike looked awesome! What kind of temps did you have and seems you were the only one on trail or were there others out hiking also?
@ChrisGoesOutdoors
@ChrisGoesOutdoors Жыл бұрын
I could definitely sleep in it if I had to. Not as stealthfully as the van which is unfortunate, but thats the tradeoff. Temps in the AM were around 20 but it warmed up to probably the mid 40s during the day. Though elevation definitely felt colder. Only ran into one other person the entire day as I was working my way back down

Great video Chris. Love Subarus. What do you think about the clearance for a standard 5 door Impreza? I know the forester has more height. I’m torn between switching in the future from my wrx to a forester or standard 5 door Impreza. Only need little more space for family and dog
