Check out this video of an executive at Carrier Air Conditioner (owned by United Technologies) in Indianapolis informing 1,400 employees that their jobs will be moved to Mexico. Cenk Uygur, host of The Young Turks breaks down the video and discusses what's really behind the decision. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
Read more here: www.mediaite.com/online/video-...
“Although the decision to inform a workforce of 1,400 employees that they’ll soon be losing their jobs to Mexico is an admirable one from the standpoint of candor, it hardly makes for a good recipe for workplace morale.
A cell phone video taken at Carrier Air Conditioner in Indianapolis shows the exact moment that the plant and union workers were told that the company had decided to shift production south of the border. “The best way to stay competitive and protect the business for longterm is to move production from our facility in Indianapolis to Monterrey, Mexico,” says the company representative at the microphone.
Although the change would not take effect until 2017, the reactions from the gathered restless crowd were telling.”*

Those kinds of CEO salaries are NEVER justified. No one works literally a THOUSAND TIMES more or better or is that much smarter than any average employee. In fact, the reality is that it's totally arbitrary; the CEO is the one at the top with all the power and gets to direct where the cash flows so of course he (and it's mostly he) directs a lot if it to himself. Simple. Capitalism? What name so?

+7un Away Don't be an @hole this early in the day. CEOs are paid in shares so they would have a vested interest in the company's success. However, company buybacks of shares to artificially inflate the price for the short term hurt the long term shareholders, the actual owners of the company. So it's nowhere near as simple as you describe it. Also, if I were a company I would rather pay my designers and my R&D department at least as much as the CEO thereby encouraging them to make the absolute BEST product possible while also attracting the best possible talent (and unlike CEOs, here you have actual TALENT to speak of).

Vian zlonomav Well, yeah, all of that is true, and that's not the way the idealized "capitalism" is supposed to function. My view is that capitalism imploded in 1929 and never really recovered. Ever since then it's been like what you described... big corporations surviving only because they are on government life support. My point was only about this one specific instance, the way Carrier is behaving in this clip is exactly what capitalism is supposed to be about. In any case, the entire field of mainstream free market economics seems to me to be more ideology than real science.

Trump and Sanders do NOT have two totally different ideas on how to fix jobs being moved to other countries. Sanders has an idea. Trump has hot air with no substance behind it. Corporations will do whatever makes the most profit for them. If that means following the law, then they'll follow the law. If that means breaking the law and paying a fine, then that's what they'll do. We need to make it more profitable for businesses to remain here and play by the rules than send their employees elsewhere and break the rules.

These are the kind of stories that piss me off. This is why we need a higher minimum wage. The problem isn't that big corporations can't pay their employees higher, it's just they'd rather give more to the top CEO'S and not their actual workers. Worker wages have remained stagnant while they take in more. And now, because they want to keep their salaries, they want to lay off so many people. This is the kind of stuff that really upsets me.

This is not the country in which I grew up.How much longer is this going to go on? How much longer can it go on before every working class person is living under a bridge. Things in this country MUST change. Hillary will prove to be business as usual. Bernie Sanders offers the best chance for real change in this country that I have seen since the optimistic outlook we had under president Kennedy. Our economy has been dysfunctional for years and must by fixed before it is too late. Just some thoughts from an old retired guy. A.R. Norfolk,Va.

It's never "just a business decision". If you haven't thought about the wellbeing of your employees then it is a poor decisions that hasn't explored all aspects of itself. If it has thought about the wellbeing of it's employees then it isn't "Just a business decision." I get so tired of the spineless CEO cowards that hide behind "it's just business." like the concentration guards stated that "it was just their job".

But I thought we were in a recovery, isn't that what the government keeps telling us? We never left the recession of 2008, we didn't hold the banks responsible and we just created many more bubbles all ready to burst. We are heading for a depression similar to 1929. Manufacturing has dropped to record lows. These are the real reasons people are voting for Trump and Sanders. The people have had enough. They are being sucked dry in the current system and as food stamps rise, the people become agitated.

A very important economic point to add to this conversation is that these American earned paychecks pay federal income tax. The employer and the employee contributions fund the social security system and finally American paychecks help support their local economies. All of this goes away when jobs leave the U.S.A.
@blacksmith67

In a way this is a sort of example of the Tragedy of the Commons. Corporations share consumers as a common resource (e.g. the same person who drives a car, buys gas, uses an internet connection and brushes their teeth spends some of their income with hundreds if not thousands of goods and services providers). When one corporation decides to lay off employees and move jobs out of the country, they do so knowing that other employers, by maintaining their workforce, will dilute the effect such that the loss of consumers does not cancel out the profit gain from firing some of them. But when too many corporations fire too many employee/consumers, then the total effect does hurt all of the corporations. When viewed in this way, the outsourcing of jobs to other countries is a type of tax theft, in that corporate profits are gained by not merely reducing the tax base by the number of jobs lost, but by shifting the burden of unemployment onto the government. Moreover, with long term, chronic unemployment come all other kinds of social burdens, such as loss of housing, alcohol/drug abuse, poorer education for the children of unemployed just to name a few.

Also India so many of our jobs are now in India. Basically jobs anywhere other than America. Hillary would be the worst thing that has happened to America, possibly worst than Obama if that is even possible.

+GuyThatUhate1 the us has the highest corporate tax rate in the industrial first world. If we lowered it to around 15% we would have a massive reshoring of companies which happened in countries with lower taxes for corporations like Ireland and even some of the Caribbean countries as of late. The us loses tax money when these companies leave so we would be much better off if they stayed and employed people as opposed to leaving and losing all tax revenue. And we can impose tariffs which is how we generated most tax revenue in the late 1800s and early 1900s. TRUMP WILL DO THIS AND WIN

If companies would tell people how much or how little of their product is made in the US by Americans, we'd know what we are buying. I suggest that companies whose products are 90- 100% made in the USA loudly advertise that fact. There are many Americans who are willing to pay a bit more for American made--especially, since many goods made in Mexico are not that much cheaper in the end.

Jorge in Monterrey will work for five dollars an hour with no benefits. Tsu Li in Beijing will work for even less. Billy Bob from Indianapolis wants 80k a year, with benefits, for doing the same job. This is the real problem here, not politics. The executives get even more money for making these moves plus they no longer have to worry about unions. Nothing is going to fix this, other than financially punishing corporations for offshore labor.

They (corporations) are using (or abusing) the rules of the system they are in. Renowned economist Richard Wolfe talks about this very subject in-depth. This is the nature of capitalism. Unless workers own the means of production, we will always be in a perpetual skirmish between corporate greed and workers rights.

The government should cancel it's contracts with those scumbags. Henry Ford was also a Capitalist, but he understood that workers need to be able to afford what they produce-to be part of the consumer base. How the hell are people supposed to buy products when their jobs are being shipped overseas just to eek out a bit more profit for the company. The government has a lot of leverage in this situation, and they should use it.

They looked rather foolish when thousands of Ford workers began buying and driving the cars they produced. One might even say that, with that unprecedented move, Ford was recycling his earlier wage increase and thus produced a win-win scenario.
