Panama Papers Expose Massive Global Corruption Scandal

They are laundering money from out of their own countries into private bank accounts in offshore tax havens. Cenk Uygur, host of The Young Turks, breaks it down. "The Panama Papers are an unprecedented leak of 11.5m files from the database of the world’s fourth biggest offshore law firm, Mossack Fonseca. The records were obtained from an anonymous source by the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung, which shared them with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ). The ICIJ then shared them with a large network of international partners, including the Guardian and the BBC.
What do they reveal?
The documents show the myriad ways in which the rich can exploit secretive offshore tax regimes. Twelve national leaders are among 143 politicians, their families and close associates from around the world known to have been using offshore tax havens.
A $2bn trail leads all the way to Vladimir Putin. The Russian president’s best friend - a cellist called Sergei Roldugin - is at the centre of a scheme in which money from Russian state banks is hidden offshore. Some of it ends up in a ski resort where in 2013 Putin’s daughter Katerina got married.”*

***** To be fair, a lot of those 'companies' are just shells that exist nowhere but on paper for tax purposes. It's common corporate strategy to have a corporation make a smaller subsidiary that exists for no other reason than to absorb the toxic residue of their malfeasance. Then, at an appropriate time, the company's jettisoned to the wind, carrying the repercussions of their actions with it.

+Tim Bradley Not quite, alas, as he/she leaked it to Soros-controlled organization, among other think tanks, that commonly control StateDep. Hence MAGICALLY USA are not implicated, there is no searchable database, and whole propaganda about those leaks is about Putin, who is not even ever mentioned in any of the leaked documents, unlike others who did not get to be in the headlines in the first day. So what we have here is a PR hatched job operation, where leaks about SOME of actually implicated people is just a byproduct of this anti-Putin PR. Read "Corporate Media Gatekeepers Protect Western 1% From Panama Leak" article via Google cache (the site is overloaded, so this article directly does not open). The Guardian itself, which is Cayman Islands off-shore, is implicated, MAGICALLY there are no reports on that now, even though owner's scheme was exposed already in 2012. The musician The Guardian talks about has publicly rich friends, not all of whom like off-shores ascribed to them, so they might ask him to be a holder. However, if Putin would want to own some property unofficially, there is no need to use off-shore/abroad financial instrument -- too risky (adversary territory) for his level, makes no sense. It all could be done purely within Russia. The Ski Resort that was mentioned has relatively cheap marrying service ceremonies, dozens of Russians marry there every day. To drag Putin's daughter's small wedding to this off-shore scheme is an example of TRYING TOO HARD on StateDep/MSM part. So while Russia is highly corrupt country, and some documents among leaked ones show that, Cenk's totally relaying a nonsense conjecture story about Putin who is not even part of the leaks, is bad example of "journalism". Cenk should not allow himself to be used as propaganda tool.

Despite my status as a conservative, albeit moderately conservative this channel is outstanding. Regardless of whether or not I agree with Cenk or Ana, I can always relate to what they are saying. They make great arguments and understandable points and there's a lot to be said for that. They are both great people with immeasurable amounts of common sense. Really really appreciate The Young Turks.

I don't know why the rich complain about tax rates when many of them don't pay any taxes due to these types of schemes. People forget that taxes pay for law enforcement, military, regulatory agencies, road repairs, infrastructure maintenance, etc.. Things that keep us safe.

I live in Adelaide Australia, our power network is directly involved in this and surprise surprise we paid some of the highest prices for electricity in the world. Add on top of this tax evasion and all of the other problems that come with it I am absolutely furious to say the least. I just saw on television here a full report on this and apparently in the British Isles there are so many corporations operating now that there are 15 corporations for every man woman and child there. That is how outrageous the greed and corruption has become! We truly need a political revolution, we all need a Bernie Sanders in our country's, we must change the laws we must protect ourselves. Together we stand divided we fall.

the funny part is their is apparently not a single US firm that was hit by this scandal, even a little one, when almost all country's have individuals and firms concerned by this scandal. That hella suspicious, like if they where warned in advance.

Bob Jobs more than 300 journalists investigator collaborated and worked together for one year to decorticate this massive document leak, so we know already that they are no US citizens and firms in those documents, that the reason why i am very confused by this fact. I am pretty sure the leak come from an US source who certainly didn't sent documents that concern americans, that very dirty, almost like if it was staged by some powerfull organisation who want some individuals in those document to be discredited (Putin ?)

Raza Well that seems to be the crux of the issue. The rich would argue that they pay *more* than their fair share, while many don't pay any income tax at all. They argue that it's the taxing that is immoral. I'm not a rich guy, so I don't know that to be the case, but there is another side to this coin.

money will be necessary for a long time. however, that doesn't mean you're relationship to it needs to be unnatural. Google - Charles Henry Carey Lincoln's economic advisor. they ended slavery and slavery at its core is economic in nature. they did this by way of law. Law that had been followed dawn of time. New Testament, Old Testanent, Quaran, etc. Every new written Law is exponentially larger in volume. It is so large now that it would have been impossible to crack without a searchable database. Mossack Fonseca is the fourth largest solicitor firm, forming the offshore companies. The other three are much bigger. The database is the list of politicians/celebrities/sportsmen who used Fonseca and not a comprehensive list of people who use the offshore companies. There are at least two million offshore companies in the world. BVI itself has 500,000 companies.

They have control over their own tax rates, and when they're very low it attracts rich people - the islands win.

I can kinda help you on that one Tiger.......the city of London, as a financial entity operates under a separate set of laws to that of the UK. Think of the city of London as it's own country. Secondly, most of the financial mechanisms used to hide these ill gotten gains are created by banks, law firms and investment groups that operate within the city of London. This allows them to get the royal stamp of approval to commit such immoral activities. The countries in question might be former british colonies but the British still have significant influence over the governance of those colonies. The British government could implement direct rule, this would allow them to stop all tax havens that still have a Union Jacks on their flag, to put it simply. Will they.......let's wait and see, pressure is building.

+Alex Carre Yes, but why do the big dogs tolerate the enormous loss of taxes not to mention the potential money laundering outlet? If any of these small island states set up laws that for instance allowed companies to ignore international patents (for drugs or anything else) or copyright laws - would the United States and the European Union tolerate that? Of course not!

Cameron Soo Yeah, we've already had these guys for 3 years. They've pulled some shenanigans a few times, but this time it's just too much. People are kind of shocked, really. There are a few parliamentarians who have or used to have tax haven accounts, but the prime minister? We really didn't expect that. So, it is accumulative, but yeah, after the financial crash we just wanted the government to start representing the people (for the most part). They did for a while after the crash, but seem to be back to their old ways again, so it's time to get them out of there.

Edward Murdoch These persons will be shielded in a witness protection apparatus which is worldwide. Their identities will never be revealed unless another leak occurs. 200 current ones are a small part of the numbers of such who've been doing this since the 1870's.
