Yeah, I think Sean Lock tricked almost everyone the first time they watched this. It's one of the best bluffs I've ever seen. From start to finish he played it perfectly. Saying the game is stupid, reaching in with his hand as if he wants to pick up the carrot, even saying that he doesn't want to swap boxes after Jon already said he wants to swap the boxes. The way he does it also is absolutely hilarious, which makes it even better to watch. To me this is the best moment from 8 out of 10 cats. I still go back to this clip every now and then, because it just cheers me up.

Sean Lock is a weird one for me, cos when he's a guest on panel shows, I think he's my favourite UK comedian currently, but his stand-up never makes me laugh as much. If you haven't already, you should check out some of the Sean Lock compilations from 8 Out Of 10 Cats and 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown, cos they're hilarious.

I agree. He's absolutely brilliant on panel shows. I saw his stand up live, and thought it was alright, but nothing special. He did a sitcom, 15 Storeys High, which I love. Hardly anyone's even heard of it, but I think it is a really great show. I'd highly recommend that. I'm pretty sure there was a radio version originally, as well.

I have just found this channel, I live in the UK. I have seen all these the first time round but thank you so much for reminding me of them. Your reaction videos are absolutely superb. I like how you are getting used to the accents and nuance and it is really interesting when you don't get a joke. I don't mean that is a bad way, it's just interesting seeing the differences.

"Everyone" is the key word here. If even 10% of the audience think that's a bluff and go 'Ooh' then there is a seed of doubt in Jon's mind. Convincing the whole room that he was the idiot with his delivery, and the reaching in to take the carrot at the start. Perfect misdirection.

The intense music that plays after Jimmy says ”let’s play… Carrot in a box” (and again at the very end) are the five opening notes to Jingle Bells (i.e. ”Dashing through the snow”). Nice little easter egg. :)

8 out if 10 cats and countdown are two separate shows Channel 4 orchestrated a special "mash-up night", merging two shows to form a special edition of the pair, as part of its 30th-anniversary celebrations. Amongst the programmes that were chosen to be merged for the evening of specials, production teams on Countdown and 8 Out of 10 Cats agreed to combine the two formats of their respective 8 out of 10 cats the stand alone show is better the other is is a just a word game

RIP Sean. :( It's a brilliant demonstration of outwitting a smarter person than yourself by using their preconceived view of you against them. There's only one tell in the entire video where Sean kind of gives away his diabolical bluff; when Jon tells him that 'if there's no carrot in Sean box, he's a genius', Sean looks down and shy away from keeping eye contact with Jon. That's a classic tell that you are deceiving the other person. :)
