Gears and Gasoline

7 жыл бұрын

I've only been a car enthusiast for 11 years now, but in those 11 years I've heard many people complain about new technology in modern cars. Sure, driver assists take away from the raw driving experience, but they also add a new dimension to driving. It's not easy accepting something that's different than what you're used to, but I hope that we can all appreciate the advancements in car technology that we have today.

Susano I agree. It's great that cars are getting faster and all that but they lose personality. It's like watching someone else play a game of chess. They might be better at it than you but it just takes away all the fun.

Computer programmers shiver at the thought that a bad line of code could end someones life. There's millions upon millions of lines of code in the newer cars, think about all the combinations of draw calls that could cause some anomaly glitch. Computers in cars should take the more analog approach, being less intrusive and more assistant. Not to mention all the touch screen controls that require you to look away from the road to use them...

Nizzle FoShizzle agreed. Even electronic throttle is fine if it doesn't require the computer to work, ie a potentiometer style circuit. the computer should be a third party, not a middle man.

They had their moment, and that moment is now over. They increase drag when up, they freeze in place during cold winters, if a motor breaks you've got no illumination from that side even when the bulb is still fine, and they add weight and complication (on the front end, which in the vast majority of cases is not a good thing). They're also an aesthetic gamble. They aren't necessarily hideous (usually), but both the Nissan S13 and Toyota AE86 were better looking in their fixed-headlight variants (so of course the US market only got the popups, even though the archaic headlight regulations that led to their use were already gone in at least one of those cases), and fixed-headlight conversions on popup cars don't always look much better.

Cars changing and moving is a good thing and a bad thing. I personally believe that cars will never be fully autonomous as long as humans exist. Even if they did, someone would eventually say "man, I miss being able to control my car." and would probably bring back manually controlled cars. I like the fact that some cars are getting faster, some are more aerodynamic and some are more fuel efficient. I also like that some are more comfortable and safe. What I don't like is the lack of manual transmission on most cars and some of the other dumb factors behind car design nowadays. But the stupid trends come and go. The stupid trends usually die harder.

I'm afraid that the consumers of more expensive cars that non-car enthusiasts are buying said cars with dual clutches and autos when that doesn't reflect the lower income car person. I feel as though if more car people had more cash to throw at supercars there would be a lot more manuals.
@CanadianCarguy247
@CanadianCarguy247 7 жыл бұрын
+ShazamMan But, let's say the world is all autos all of the sudden. I know myself and a good amount of car people will miss the mechanical feel of a manual. You just don't get the same connection with an auto, in my opinion at least. Also, speed shouldn't really matter to a person as long as there having fun with there car, the car could be a 05 Corolla XRS or a 17 488 GTB, two completely diffrent cars but just because the corolla isn't as fast they can be having just as much fun if not more than the person in the Ferrari. So in the end just because the auto is faster than the manual shouldn't determine if your car is fun to you or not, it should be how the car makes you feel.
@chrxx4327

I definitely think you're right. The people that buy supercars mostly are buying them as status symbols. If you look at the more affordable sport car range they all pretty much come with a manual option. Us plebs still want manual sports cars.

Absolutely right, everything in the car world is based on the consumers themselves. Not everyone is a car enthusiast and most will never be. Most people in America that are not car enthusiasts don't want anything to do with a manual transmission, and they miss out on learning this skill that less than 20% of Americans know how to do. It's even more sad when I make friends with international students and they are the ones who recognize immediately when a car is standard and they get excited because it reminds them of home. Americans who have never seen it before just stare in awe at the weird shift pattern and go "Huh? Why do you have to move that thing so much? Why are there three pedals?"

well, it stops people from texting. 1 hand on wheel 1 hand on stick shift 1 foot on gas 1 foot on clutch can't steer with knee because both feet have to be pushing on the petals. Steering with elbow would be too inconvenient. not steering at all wouldn't be worth it (even to teen drivers).

What's the most worrying, however, is autonomous cars. Since its creation, cars have always been about groundbreaking engineering, and driving experience. The driver, and how the driver feels, has always been the roots and the reason of a car’s existence. However in the recent years it has become less and less so. It won’t be long until the driver is completely taken out of the equation. We who love cars and love driving them will become the minority, the outcast, perhaps even the weird ones.

well said. It saddens me when i'm sitting at a red light and I look over and at everyone else and they are all looking at their phones instead of anticipating the moment the light turns green (me driving a 4 cylinder Camry that doesn't even make 200 horsepower I believe is proof you don't have to have a 400 horsepower muscle car to have fun driving). it really makes me fear for the future generations, not just because they may miss out on the experience of driving but what else they will miss out on due to the growing autonomy of everyday things.

Sam Kent I don't know why you think motorcycles will never be self driving. Honda already has a self balancing bike that can literally move with no rider; Admittedly very slow. It's only a matter of time until it can ride perfectly well without a pilot. Also, very soon they're releasing bikes with automatic adaptive braking - they will brake themselves if they detect an inevitable crash with another vehicle. So the day is coming..

Your points are logical (except that one where you said modern cars are easier to modify, they are not). Since I do like good and logical argumentation, I have to go against myself and be a bit of a jerk right now. I personally understand that objectively, cars get better, the new 911 is faster arround a track than the old 911. But, when it comes to cars, logic gets thrown out of the window for me. I don't see cars in numbers, I don't want to have fast lap times, neither do I want a car with so many safety features that it basically takes over the driving for me. The sensation of driving is slowly fading away, and everybody who drove old generation legends like the M models e36, e39 or e46 and compared them to the new BMWs knows what I'm talking about. Same goes for the older AMGs, they just felt so fucking brutal compared to the new ones. Cars just start to loose that "thing" in my eyes, I can't describe that, but I start to drool when I see a 90s 911 in perfect condition roll by, while the new 911 is nothing special to me. Same goes for BMW, Merc, Audi, Aston, Jaguar, Bentley, Maserati, Ferrari and so on and so forth. To put it simple, a lot of us enthusiasts don't givea flying fuck about numbers, we do care about the passion, the feel cars give us...

It feels so comfy and its nice to sometimes drive slow and enjoy the ride. I just restored the car so Im adding new sway bars and suspension. Then my second car is a VW Jetta 2.5 which I like to add parts to as well. But in all I dont care about stupid times or how fast it is. I just like getting my hands dirty and seeing what I come up with :).

Up you should go! I worked for Mercedes-Benz and Honda in car development and I can tell you. Cut the cost and plan obsolescence were two biggest demands from sales division. If someone said that some part of car is going to fail, sales said "Yes, but after the warranty expires, so we don't care." Nobody wants to make anything that lasts. Look at Saab. They made car that last forever and Saab is gone now.

AlmeydaTV Cars were made to last once, but you have to go back mutch further than you'd think to find them. The change occurred after ww2. In the economic boom of the early 50s for the first time the car market became saturated. Everyone that needed a car and could afford one had one. To combat this car companies began radically changing the design of their cars every 3 years and in the late 50s at gm under harley earl they cut that down to one year. Which is why the 55 56 and 57 bel air are so different. This combined with cheaper paints designed to fail in 5 years, ensured that the sheer shame of driving an old decaying car, would keep you going to the Dealer every 5 years for the rest of your life.

You're wrong. Change is irrelevant. The point is the experience. An EK Civic from 1999 is more fun to toss around than an Evo X- I know first hand. And this should not be the case. Modern cars, for the most part, are incredibly distant. Soulless. Antiseptic. People call it "refined," but its just numbing. A manual trans is a point of control that is being taken away. Electronic Stability Control is the same. Heck, even ABS takes away control in that you are no longer the only one telling the brakes what to do. Those of us who can actually drive want to actually drive. And to us, that means having control. In many cases, it's fine to be able to give up some control. On a long drive home in heavy rain, when I just wanna get to bed, I'd love my car to drive for me. And failing that, I'd love to have ECS/ABS/Cruise control/etc. But what you advocate is complacency, which would lead to all control being stripped of those of us who are actually passionate about driving.

In terms of self-driving car, we not gonna see many cars with one at least not anytime soon. For example one thing that car makers know for sure is car enthusiasts like us love actually driving the car ourself, and not some sensors and computers so for them to put a self-driving feature in a "sport" car is a dumb idea. I hope u understand

There's not really fair comparisons here; an electric vs gasoline car is a FAR broader comparison than disc vs drum brakes, or power vs. non power steering. We're seeing cars become faster, but also less unique; as with the Formula 1 example given, cars are looking more and more 'the same' these days, apart from rare examples. Performance cars are becoming harder to find, and 'driver's machines' are largely replaced by 'A to B' transportation. Your average electric car is a very sterile experience - no sound, no smells, and very little in common with a traditional car. Expecting most performance-oriented drivers to embrace the new as if it was just a mild evolutionary step (going back to power vs manual steering) is asking far more than you think it is.

In High School ( in 1978 ) I was driving a 2 speed, 283ci Chevelle , and thought it was killer... it only had front disc brakes, and no Posi, but I loved it, then I graduated to a 1971 Z-28 with a 4 speed LT-1 350ci, 4.10 Posi , and that , in 1980 was the pinnacle of performance to me... fast forward to just two days ago...I drove a 2016 Fiat 500 Abarth 1.4L turbo with electronic assist steering, 4 wheel disc, and electronic Sport mode that tightens steering and changes shift points for maximum fun...and , God was it fun ! I haven't been so giddy when driving since my Z-28, which with 400hp at the wheels did the trick...but I am amazed at how much cars have changed , and only needed to drive the Abarth to see just exactly how much cars have changed....and as a car guy who loves manual everything.... I was flat blown away at how well that damn Fiat handled.

MrOrtloff debatble. Most safety items are done years before govt forces them into cars. Many cars nowadays have blind spot monitoring systems. Its not forced by the governement... Yet. What the governement does is tell automakers to implement systems that were already in their mid to high end range of the model spectrum and forces it into the cheap range and raise the price of the cheap car. This is one of the reasons why cars today cost more than they did 10 years ago when adjusted for inflation.
@bmortloff
@bmortloff 7 жыл бұрын
Frank Magana In setting the regs on cheaper cars they make them safer for everyone; passengers other road users and pedestrians for the life of the car. Price wise you're getting more car for your money now than you did ten years ago - at least here in Australia. Last thing blind spot monitors are really just for people who can't set up their mirrors correctly. and they really aren't adding much to the price of the car. The safety features which are fundamental to survivability in crashes shouldn't be optional just to get a new car on the road.
@frankmagana1408
@frankmagana1408 7 жыл бұрын
MrOrtloff but then the cheaper car isnt cheap anymore. We see this with pickup trucks. Theyre all over 40k now when they used to be more high 20's. So what do a lot of people do than? They see more value in getting a 12 year old pickup truck. Hell im looking into getting a Yukon for myself and sure as hell wont be anytging from the last 5 years
@bmortloff
@bmortloff 7 жыл бұрын
I agree, but I think it would be better to have a second hand car market with vehicles that have decent safety features than a cheaper new car market packed with Chinese death traps at the low end. That's what I was trying to get at when I said safety features that last the "life of the car". Better pay than 15 years ago wouldn't hurt either.
