Jeep Wrangler 2024 review: Turbo four-cylinder engine replaces V6 in updated GWM Tank 300 4WD rival

The 2024 Jeep Wrangler has had a change of heart, with the first major update for the fourth-generation four-wheel-drive wagon ushering in a new standard engine for Australia. That's right; the 3.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol Pentastar V6 is no more, with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder unit taking its place.
While it may be 45.2 per cent smaller, the new engine actually delivers buyers of the new Wrangler an additional 53Nm of maximum torque, at 400Nm. That said, peak power is down 9kW, to 200kW, but improved fuel efficiency is promised thanks to the transplant. But, of course, there's more to the iconic Jeep's than just that.

Jeep Wranglers are nicer to own than people think. It's a car and a hobby in one. Just be prepared for a breakdown and a trip on a flatbed. So don't do remote touring with young children.

Funny how Tank 300 gets criticized by most reviewers for not being a diesel (which has now been confirmed as coming) but the overpriced Jeep gets praised for a 2L petrol turbo. I was on camping trip recently and the access road was a rough, so I was envious of the mighty Jeep Rubicon that arrived. That is until it had to be taken out of there on a flatbed. Second most unreliable car brand on sale in the US!

Agreed the Tank 300 is a solid choice. Both provides 2.0 turbo petrol engine, but you will be paying almost double amount of the money for the Jeep! Not to mention the comfort, the luxurious interior, the tech and the 7 year warranty.
