In this video, I discuss and demonstrate the use of a twca cam to hollow a portion of a cherry bowl. For more information about this bowl and carving techniques, visit davidffisherblog.wordpress (.com)

Alright dude....you've convinced me, I'll be making one of these. I'll have to see what the popular radii are, and come close. :)
@talkin-ape5 жыл бұрын
The range of sizes vary from smith to smith, but if you're making one for yourself, size it for the job you have in mind. I've not seen them bigger than a 70mm radius.

It reminds me of Roy Underhill visiting the chipcarver. He had a similar tool, only yours is bigger! He had very long handles on his chisels, too.

I just received my Toohka Kam bowl carver from Ukraine. It looks just like your but with a turned handle. I think the idea of a swan is brilliant! If I saw it, I would probably think, big sauce ladle, lol. I was unpacking the Toohka and barely touched the blade while taking the bubble wrap off the end and sliced my thumb open. I was distracted and known better not to rush but I was excited to try it out. So to all the Newbie carvers out there, these tools come in Extremely, scary sharp. I have made other wood covers for my other tools too. I like the idea and made them out of purple heart. I really love the idea of incorporating leather as the closing mechanize and will try to make your version as soon as the leather comes in. What did you use for the pin that holds the leather closed? I bought a hoof pick which some are shaped just like your tool. Its steel and I'm going to try to sharpen it for carving spoons. It has a super comfy handle too. I was thought that it would be my camping/hiking tool and I can leave it in the car with a small sharpening stone. That way if it got stolen or lost I can just get another one for $3.99 on eBay.

The pin that holds the leather closed is just a whittled piece of hardwood inserted into a drilled hole. Its carved a little wider at the end so the leather pops over it and doesn't want to lift off easily. Hope your thumb has healed up! Happy carving!

Thanks for this very nice video! Nice to see this beautiful tool in action --- waiting for my own. Odd optical effects here -- are you shooting the video through a plastic lens?

No -- ipad. The biggest factor is that I don't know what I'm doing when it comes to video tech!

Cheers mate, I appreciate your comparing the gouges. I'm looking at getting one or the other for my bowl and cup carving... Do you have a recommendation for smaller items like those - gouge or twca cam .. or other? Thanks
@davidfisher91793 жыл бұрын
A spoon-bent gouge may be necessary for getting down into a steep small bowl. A hook tool, including a twca cam can work too. All depends on preference and the situation. I have lots more information at my website davidffisher.com

David! I just got a TWCA cam and want to make a sheath for it, but am struggling to figure out how you made yours. I was wondering 1. How did you cut the recess for the blade? 2. How did you adhere the leather to the wood block? Thank you so much -J
@davidfisher91797 жыл бұрын
I traced the shape of the blade onto a block of wood that was a little thicker than the blade depth. Then I cut that thin curving section out with a coping saw. I glued a thin piece of wood to the back of that. I just glued the leather to the wooden parts with regular wood glue. I glued it on with the thin wood "cap" piece in place -- like a book cover.

I generally stay away from cherry, especially limb wood. It misbehaves terribly as it dries, usually splitting open toward the center wood. Cherry seems to store up a lot of stresses as it grows and when the material around some of the stress points gets cut away the remaining wood seems to move quite a lot and mostly not in a good way.

Hi, I live in an isolated small town in Labrador, Canada. Interested in your work and would like to try it myself, but have no retail access to woodworking hand tools. Could you recommend a brand or source for the tools you use?
@DFbowlcarver7 жыл бұрын
Sure. I have lots of information on that topic at my website (check the Frequently Asked Q. page) and my blog (click the "tools" category from the list on the right side). davidffisher (.com) and davidffisherblog.wordpress (.com)

Hi dave I see you hold the twca cam in your right hand and steady it with your left ,I'm predominantly right handed so would i need to buy a right or left hand twca ? I'm a complete beginner and suffer with mental health problems so i do get confused very easily lol .thanks if you can help best wishes Neil
@davidfisher91792 жыл бұрын
Hi Neil. I get confused easily too, so you've got company! I think the twca cam that makes the most sense for a right-handed person is one with the cutting edge to the left when the tool is held straight out in front of you. I'm right-handed, and I'm using a right-handed twca cam in the video. I hope that helps. Happy carving!
