How to carve a Falcon from a block of sandstone? Sculptor: Koen van Velzen. See more on beeldhouwerijblog.nl/en/tag/valk/ A look into the process from weathered down statuette to copy in new stone, and insight into a number of the tools and techniques I used.
The Falcon in this case was originally from the Valckeniershuis (Falconer's house) in Franeker, the Netherlands, and dates from 1662. The copy was carved in Bentheimer sandstone just as the original, and is 63 cms or about 2' tall.

I invented most of these tricks by myself for speeding up the process. Of course, with a pointing machine is a bit more accurate, but that makes it a LOT slower and thus more costly, which is not always an option. Thanks for the compliment!

Hey mate I am a stonemason/carver in Australia 🇦🇺. You are one of the only guys I have seen apart from myself who uses this method of working. You are to be congratulated. I use cuturri air hammers. Do you mind if I ask what type of air hammers you use???? Thanks again mate. Liam

Hi Liam, thanks for the compliments. Did you mean the use of templates as opposed to using the pointing machine? My air hammers are the German made Fröhlich & Klüpfel FK 702.4 (the large one), the FK 724 (with its own protect system attached) and the Cuturi E-type. For stonemasonry work (which I almost never do) I recently bought two other Cuturi hammers.

sorry for the question, I am an artist too, but i am not familiar with the tools you sculptors are using. what kind of pencil are you using? the graphite color seems to stand out despite of the dust that is covering the block.
@beeldhouwerijvanvelzen1533
@beeldhouwerijvanvelzen1533 7 жыл бұрын
You could use just any old carpenter's pencil (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carpenter_pencil) , but those will wear out quite quickly. I use harder pencils specifically meant for writing and drawing on stone, for example like this one: www.its-tools.eu/en/marking/1784-lyra-331-stone-mason-pencil-24cm-4084900210222.html. An old carpenter's trick is to cover it in PVC electrical ducting, so it doesn't get lost as quickly when it's shorter, and also doesn't break so easily.

Thank you Liége. I use three different air hammers, being FK702.4 and FK724 by Frölich&Klüpfel, and Cuturi typo E. The first needs chisels with 12.6 mm shank, the second protect chisels of 10.2 mm, and the third uses 7.2mm chisels.

@@beeldhouwerijvanvelzen1533 thank you very much . Would you recommend buying this tools ? I'm a brazilian sculptor and I want start carving stone , I have plenty of granite in my place , tons and tons of a beautiful greyish hard stone in my garden . If you had to choose only one air hammer to work , which one would you buy ?
@beeldhouwerijvanvelzen1533
@beeldhouwerijvanvelzen1533 4 жыл бұрын
@@liegesaboya8265 Depends on the budget and the size hammer you want. Those three models go from big to small, and they're quite expensive. I'd say, first learn to carve by hand before you break expensive chisels or hammers. Granite is tough, you'll need tungsten carbide point chisels and bush hammers.

@@beeldhouwerijvanvelzen1533 I have some practice already , including forging and tempering chisels .Besides I've made many sculptures in my life , in wood , bronze and steel . I think, to start , I should buy one of yours hammers , the smallest .
@beeldhouwerijvanvelzen1533
@beeldhouwerijvanvelzen1533 4 жыл бұрын
@@liegesaboya8265 To start carving in stone, it would be wisest to have a talk with a stonesculptor first, or if you can't find one, a stonemason. Watch them work, that's the best way to learn. And start with a limestone and work towards harder stones later. That very small hammer is useless for rough carving, only suited for detailing. In Brazil, probably the larger cuturi models would be easier to find. There are many cheaper air hammers, but those are usually not very good for stone carving because they only have two settings: nothing or full-out. A good air hammer can give exactly the force you need. Try them out before buying one.

Goed gezien!

@beeldhouwerijvanvelzen1533
@beeldhouwerijvanvelzen1533 4 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely correct in the first statement. It has them because the original one had five talons. You can find the whole story on my blog: the Five-taloned Falcon beeldhouwerijblog.nl/en/de-valck-met-vijf-teenen/ About the sandstone not lasting, well all material will turn to dust eventually. I don't know about your local sandstone, but the original falcon was made of the same material as this copy. It has withstood the elements plus very acid pigeon and seagull poop for over three hundred years. Bentheimer sandstone is the most weather resistant material we use here for stone sculpture, apart from granite Thanks for your compliment!
