Carving a deep relief coat of arms in sandstone

This video shows how I carved a family crest or coat of arms in Bentheimer Sandstone.
It was winter when I carved this, and the temperatures were just above freezing. That's why I was wearing a thick sweater and gloves in this video.

I’d love to what you could do with a block of Carrara Italian marble! Of course, the stuff is incredible expensive.

I like the little hammer you used for tracing! Is that a pencil hammer? That is an ingenious idea I usually use carbon paper to transfer lines. Excellent work by the way!

Hi Bill, It's a Cuturi typo E bottle style hammer. I believe Trow and Holden make a similar type of hammer. It takes small chisels with a 7.2mm shank, but you could just as easily use a bigger hammer for the job, just take it easy and carve right through the paper. If done correctly, you'll end up with scraps of paper that are just perfect to handle for the detailing. It's just annoying that duct tape doesn't hold on this sandstone, but otherwise that's a lot easier than clamping the paper on. Or you could use a paper glue, but then you'll need to scrape it all off again. This is what works for me.

what is that pneumatic hammer with the thumb trigger you are using?

A Fröhlich & Klüpfel FK 702.4 Excellent hammer btw. Couldn't work without it. www.froelich-kluepfel.de/Stone-processing/Chisel-hammer/Weight-up-2-5-kg/Chisel-hammer-FK-702-4::1133.html?language=en They have this one in lots of shank sizes. It gives off both soft taps and hard blows, and anything in between. I use one with a regular 1/2 inch shank. F&K is one of the best brands out there
