do you know how somebody would go about carving a porphyry vessel, like a big vase with a narrow neck, yet all hollowed out? i'm watching a documentary series on youtube called magical egypt kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nZiWe911xK7NfYE.html ... episode 2 talks about porphyry vessels which are carved very elegantly... doesn't look like the porphyry you're using though, he gestures towards a vessel of black and white stone. do you think it's possible to carve something like that with copper tools?! what's the bare minimum you would need to accomplish something like that?? not able to find any information online about this so your input would be greatly appreciated

I've been a bit (waaay) too busy lately, so all the plans I had for more videos, such as carving in granite, all came to a halt. This is a good suggestion but I can't find the time at the moment. Lots of ideas but no time at all (look up my blog as to why). But basically it's quite simple: lay your original sculpture flat on the floor or on a large board, with the tracing paper in between. Then take a carpenter's square and touch up to the perimeter of the sculpture. Put a small dash where the square meets the paper so you have an exact measuring of the size of your sculpture. Do this all along the entire outside, keeping the square always perpendicular to the base as well as to the shape you're tracing, and you'll end up with a dotted outline on your paper. Connect the dots, cut it out and put it onto your stone. This makes the outline in one direction. If you have a squared sawn block, then you can also trace it mirrored on the other side. Then 'jigsaw' or 'bandsaw' it out like a woodworker would, only by carving of course. The other two sides are a bit more tricky, but it's basically the same procedure. Do keep some reference points on both the original and the tracing, such as a dot at the top and crossing lines at the base. Good luck!

How does one "presaw" something? Isn't just sawing it? Wouldn't something that is "presawed" be something that hasn't been sawed yet?

It'll probably be my bad literal translation of our word for it. English is not my first language. But with this machine we don't just cut up a block, as in 'sawing'. With this machine we can rough out the carving. Pre-carving sawing would perhaps be a better wording?

They made a clay model, then made a plaster mold and a plaster cast, and used that as a maquette for carving the copy. They carved with hammers and chisels, and were very skilled. Anything that can be done with machine can nearly always also be done by hand, it just takes a lot longer. And they used the pointing machine: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rbZ9aZV5qbDGnac.html

@@liegesaboya8265 Depends on the budget and the size hammer you want. Those three models go from big to small, and they're quite expensive. I'd say, first learn to carve by hand before you break expensive chisels or hammers. Granite is tough, you'll need tungsten carbide point chisels and bush hammers.

@@liegesaboya8265 To start carving in stone, it would be wisest to have a talk with a stonesculptor first, or if you can't find one, a stonemason. Watch them work, that's the best way to learn. And start with a limestone and work towards harder stones later. That very small hammer is useless for rough carving, only suited for detailing. In Brazil, probably the larger cuturi models would be easier to find. There are many cheaper air hammers, but those are usually not very good for stone carving because they only have two settings: nothing or full-out. A good air hammer can give exactly the force you need. Try them out before buying one.

@beeldhouwerijvanvelzen1533

Hi Bill, It's a Cuturi typo E bottle style hammer. I believe Trow and Holden make a similar type of hammer. It takes small chisels with a 7.2mm shank, but you could just as easily use a bigger hammer for the job, just take it easy and carve right through the paper. If done correctly, you'll end up with scraps of paper that are just perfect to handle for the detailing. It's just annoying that duct tape doesn't hold on this sandstone, but otherwise that's a lot easier than clamping the paper on. Or you could use a paper glue, but then you'll need to scrape it all off again. This is what works for me.

Hardened steel just will go blunt very quickly. I prefer tungsten carbide insert in the chisels. Plus of course diamond tools. Most of my work is done that way, and of the chisels the bush hammer chisel in my air hammer is the most effective tool.
@alexzioek9680
@alexzioek9680 4 жыл бұрын
Great thanks for your answer. You still managed to chip a lot with the steel chisel. My point is that they become quickly useless without a blaksmiths help since grinding them is quite destructive. I have a bit of granite carving to do and as I really love the ancient methods I hoped to make it with steel but carbide really is a huge technological advancement. There is a video of a contamporary hindu tempie being carved of granite with steel chisels. Very impressive are the Iraivan temple construction videos but again 3 blacksmiths and tons of chisels working full time to keep up with 10 carvers.
