Reliability wise you're spot on.....for the engine alone. The automatic trans of those year range Dodges aren't great. The 2nd gen body style Rams are kinda crap, especially the front suspension on the 4wd trucks.

As said, some of us are relatively new to the diesel market. I almost bought a loaded Ford 6.4. No pressure salesman really wanted me to take it. Didn't feel right. Waited a little and ended up with a 07 5.9 Ram Megacab. A few years of experience and reading under my belt, I'm certainly glad I passed on that 6.4.

Yes, when I looked into these engines, Cummins 5.9 2005 seemed very reliable to me, so I got a 3500 4x4 dually with 8 foot bed with 4 doors. It has been just great since I bought it in 2019 with 150,000 miles. I wanted to stay away from DEF and EGR and DPF and the CP4

6.4s can be great engines when taken care of and deleted but sadly they get passed on to people who don't know what they're getting themselves into. Definitely was a smart move to pass on that one though

My 6.4 got deleted day one with 80k miles. Got a tuner and been running the 615hp tune for 180k miles with no issues and I pull 15k 20k gooseneck all the time. It's funny pulling a gooseneck with a backhoe on it at 70 through the mountains passing dodges with a boat. The tuner I got shows the hp for all models dodge, Chevy and ford and only the compound turbo 6.4L can get this kind of power on just a tune. Also, if I stay at 65 mph or less I get just over 20 mpgs, even at 80 I get 15 mpg.

The emissions laws destroyed diesel operating cost. I work at a refinery its so comical. All the laws did was push the emissions from the tail pipe to the furnace stack. We have to use million dollar catalyst that needs change out every 2 years we have to take the HGO up to 700 degrees using massive furnaces and then massive compressors to boost the whole unit up to 1750 psig. When you add up all the emissions used to heat then treat (remove Sulphur) then pressurize then distill again there's virtually no net gain. Where before diesel use to be a straight run product. bring in crude distill it then straight to the product tank for delivery. All the green warrior high fived themselves thinking they won what joke. Add insult to injury now diesels require Urea think of all the plastic bottles of that stuff.

That’s what happens when environmental laws are written by people that don’t actually care about the environment... just scoring political points. All these politicians talk about cars cars cars, but if we kept all the dino juice burning cars on the the road today, and just replaced every coal power station with nuclear, we’d stop global warming in its tracks.

They're doing this deliberately to try and kill private ownership of cars. Why do you think they're pushing EVs that cost 50k+ while strangling out the once economical diesel? First they came for the muscle cars...

You are right and it's because of the emissions crap Cat stop making on highway engines, and when you think about it it's stupid to go after diesel because of the little known fact that just about everything is moved by diesel engines (ships, semis, and trains)and with that making transport more expensive.

1,637,000 miles on my Cummins. Entire truck around it is pretty much destroyed and the engine is definitely a little tired

@@Strickland.Patrick 12 v the best ever. I have one in a crane we use . I would put one in my Chevy 4×4 1990 2500. One kid here put one in a 2000 f250 that had a 6.0 junk motor. I have Cummins in alot of equipment the best.

I have been running my 97 powerstroke for twenty years now and it’s at 380k. Still the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. I love that truck. It always has a trailer on and just loves to work. I live in the high desert in Oregon where winter temperatures are regularly in the teens and twenties and it starts no problem without being plugged in. It also gets 18-20 mpg. I did a 2000 mile trip to Arizona with a camper in the bed towing a horse trailer and averaged 16.5 mpg.

I have to say the 90s model 7.3 NO TURBO International engines are some of the best ever put in a Ford. I have seen 500,000 miles with minor issues, is oil seepage. Love the videos Wiiizard.

I have a 94 7.3 IDIT stock, only year they put a turbo on and last year for the IDI, she is a pig to start but when you get it going it runs great! The blowy by is getting a little bad but that's kinda common with them

I mean there was a reason why they only did a limited run with them like that, they don't last as long due to higher cylinder pressures and often the manifold starts to leak in the worst spot, but still a good pickup though, can't expect something that's almost 30 years old to last forever

Yeah but what good is it if it goes through three transmissions for one engine? Great engine but they mismatched it with the wrong transmission. Had several of those and all of them had transmission problems before the engine went out

Hmm.....I bought my 06 LBZ Dirty Max new.....Still going strong....Ran it 6K miles last month escaping my shop equipment from "Kommiefornia" to Idaho....Hauling a 7500lb trailer stacked full each trip....Still has no problem with any hill I encounter on a "stock tune"

I have an 04 3500 that weighs 11,000lbs daily, 170,000 miles with the original injectors 🙆‍♂️ they have definitely been failing quickly over the last couple years. Smokes at idle, slightly less power/fuel economy but still runs surprisingly well given the curb weight, even with a trailer/piece of light equipment added on. It's also somehow impossible to overheat, if you want the heat to work in winter time you better get out your cardboard to block off part of the radiator if you're on flat highway 😄 I wish it was an 06-07 instead, or didn't have the factory injectors 🤦‍♂️but that's 5k I don't wanna spend right now, or have time to do myself until it completely fails, then I'll have plenty of time 😁👍

I had an 89 F350 that I bought new with the 7.3 IDI. Sold it with 375k miles on it. Simple and easy to work on. Never had cold start issues unless it was under 20 degrees without plugging it in. Only replaced two glow plugs in the 28 years I owned it. Rebuilt the heads at 350k and the cylinder walls still had all their cross hatching. Great truck, never should have sold it.

My dad just lost ours 🥺 I loved that truck wanted to get it I hope it’s not gone gone in the impound lot. It was a 91 7.3 idi dually with a 4 speed manual he got it from our neighbor for 1500 such a rare find now a days

I had a 88 F-250 4x4 with the 7.3 idi and 5-speed, 3.55 gears. Ran it for 10 years stock, another 10 years with a Hypermax turbo kit. This truck would start as cold as 15° without plugging in the block heater, got between 20-25 mpg. Hated to part with it, divorce tends to do those type of things.

Amen, the criticism in this video is just silly. I live in Nevada and regularly have to start mine below 15 degrees, it's not an issue (I prefer to plug it in, but it will start if I don't). Yes you do have to replace the glow plugs every few years, but that's $100 at the parts store and 1-2 hours of work, tell me one thing other than the battery that you can replace on new truck for less than that yourself. I can fix just about every single thing on my 92 IDI myself (most things are logical and easy to access) and in an era where every minor problem is a $1,500 bill at the mechanic, having an old IDI seems like the only way to go. Lastly, it is slow, but I can still get 18-20 mpg regularly (not when it's 15 degrees)

I have a 1983 GMC with a 6.2 ltr Detroit diesel, with a 3 spd with a granny gear. That truck is way under powered. It could not get out of the way of Fat Bastard farting, it is that slow. But, it has 240,000 miles and only one clutch has been replaced. In the last 10 years, I have only had to replace a transmission cooling line that via vibration wore a hole through the aluminum line. I have a Tommy lift on it that came with the truck when I bought it. I got it for $2,000 and it is my wood hauling truck. I usually go out cut down 15 cords of wood a year using that old toad of a truck.. Weak engine, but it gets 22 mpg or better. And yes, I have a glow plug manual switch that I installed. I keep the batteries charged and use the block warmer before starting it in the winter. It gets down into the single digits here in Northern CA's mountains...

I daily a 7.3 IDI. There's not much in the acceleration department, but it crusies comfortably at 75 mph and is the easiest vehicle I've ever had to work on. Maintenance is key.

The old 7.3 is one of the best ever made. We have ran fleet trucks since 1979 & profits were higher while running the 7.3. This is running 33 trucks for 36 months at a time.

Bc you didn't know to turn the key over multiple times to heat glow plus my. 1995f250 with 353000 miles runs like a dream. The truck does seem to like warmer weather tho

@@bigorangesliceabe5789 If you need to heat the glow plugs multiple times it probably means you have bad injectors. You should not have to cycle the glow plugs multiple times

I had a 2000 f250 7.3 I pulled a cargo trailer with across the country coast to coast for years. So reliable, so simple. Only issue I ever had was the speed sensor ($8 part) that' was a 5 minute fix in the rear diff. These new diesels just make me laugh

​@@MitchJohnson0110the owners manual specifically said to do this multiple times for a cold start.... I remember doing this in Montana one morning sub zero temp.. took a few times but eventually started. Truck only had 100k miles, rn great. I sincerely doubt it's bad injectora

I had a 1985 Ford F250 6.9 IDI. Loved that truck. Tons of torque. Injector lines started leaking at 200K, I went to Ford truck dealer and told them, they contacted Ford, Ford sent me a set of new lines for free!

I had two 1990s GM G-30 vans with the NA 6.2/6.5 diesel and I loved them. Slow, but dead simple and efficient. Towed whatever I needed to tow without complaint. Ran one of them for years on waste vegetable oil as well.

Been looking for a G30 6.2 for awhile. Have an 89 E250 7.3 with a banks kit, 90cc IP, stage 1 injectors from R & D, on a studded IDIT long block. It's a tank. I want to build a 6.2 turbo van next.

I'd wondered if the Banks sidewinder was possible on a G30 without intruding into the passenger footwell. I sold my vans last year, but I would love to make a pickup from a G30 cutaway SRW chassis someday. Detroit 6.2 or 6.5 would be cool, but I think a Cummins 4BT with a manual gearbox like some P30 Step Vans had might work.

My dad has one of those F-250s with the 7.3 power stroke. My dad absolutely loves that truck; I believe he will be buried in it. Those engines truly are bulletproof.

yep, the wizard is wrong in this video, usually not wrong on a lot of stuff but really missed it on this video. The 7.3 is one of the best engines ever made and the idi's start extremely good in the cold too.

Other than the cavitation issue, the 7.3 idi is a bulletproof motor. No computer and simple setup just like the 6.9. I’ve own a few of them and other than the lack of power they work very well.

They need to stick to gas engines because they dont have a clue how to make a reliable diesel. No idea why people even consider a ford diesel after all the problems they've had. If you want a reliable diesel, get a truck with a cummins.

I was a Contractor for 38 years . The best truck I owned was my 2003 F250 7.3 . After 18 years and 280,000 miles it runs like a top and rides like new. I just sold it for 11,000 I replaced 1 injector and 1 high pressure pump. Not one problem with the automatic trans. I loved that truck

I have a 2003 7.3 f250 it has 200,000 miles on it and tows 15k pounds every day. It’s had an O2 sensor replaced and a high pressure oil pump replaced and that’s it. That engine is simply amazing 🎉🎉

What's the life expectancy of the original automatic transmission used in the 03 F250? I live in a dry state that rarely uses salt so I still see a lot of those driving around.

I've had many diesels over the years, and my favorite ones were the IDI Fords! Find one with the factory ats turbo kit, and a c6 transmission, and you've got a very reliable, ballsy truck.

Daily driving a 96 7.3. bought it a year ago at 208k miles. It’s currently at 215k miles and still runs like a new truck. Just keep up on your filters and injectors and it will keep going for years and years.

The Cummins is a tractor engine. The B Series. Used in old Case Maxxum tractors for many years in four cylinder and six cylinder 5.9 litre form. Also used in many excavators by Case and Korean brands. Built simple and cheap with very few individual parts. Parent metal cylinders though, which are long lasting but expensive to overhaul compared to wet or dry liner engines. Should do 12000 hours between overhauls easily. More if driven moderately with some mechanical sympathy and serviced every 400 hours/12,000 miles or so with premium diesel oil.

90% of all trucks in Sarasota Florida are lifted 6.0’s with tunes. It keeps the diesel mechanics in the area plenty busy. They could cab lift and bulletproof a 6.0 in their sleep

I try not to get a lot of options when I purchase a truck, it's not the family car, it's the work vehicle. Hell my old truck has manual windows and locks on it, talk about no luxury it doesn't even have air lol.

To be fair you can still buy a more basic truck if you'd like without spending anywhere near $100k. For example about a year ago there were brand new ram 3500 (crewcab longbed dually 4x4 diesel auto) base models with power locks, windows etc for $45k and 2500s for even less

When it comes to the 6.0 PSD, they took their diesel, downsized it, bumped its power and built it out of lighter weight materials. I have no idea how the engineers didn't see that coming.

It has nothing to do with any of the factors you listed. There are plenty of smaller, lighter, and higher power engines out there that are plenty reliable. The problems with the 6.0 are all bad parts and bad design.

The reason why that 6.0 PSD is unreliable and in a scrapheap is because the engine had cheap materials and they spill guts all over the road and marked its territory on the parking lot and the head gaskets are just cheap rubber made of cheese and the ficm is made of obsolete flip phone circuits.

Just spent two weeks married to a 95 K3500 6.5. One day just wouldn't start. New fuel filter, glow plugs, numerous power & electrical checks, etc... I walk out one day and hear a lil' voice in my head. I swear it was my Dad saying 'take the fuel cap off, boy'. Yep, S.O.B.started right up.

2007.5 and for awhile after the 6.7 Cummins had tons of issues. My Dad's 08' had so many issues (2 turbos, 2 dpf's, sensors, transmission, etc) that he sold it and bought a 2004. Never had an issue with that truck in 100,000 miles.

Yeah, a friend of mine has an 08 cummins, its only got 95k on it, and he's replaced turbo, transmission, various sensors, tie rods have snapped, probably more issues.

The 03-07 Cummins trucks where good if they had the manual transmission, the G56. The automatic transmission’s are known to go out if you look at them funny, and the maintenance on the autos is much more than you expect from an automatic transmission. They call for a band adjustment I believe every 30,000 miles. The engines are very good, solid, reliable engines, and the trucks don’t ride terribly. The 7.3PSD was still in truck the first half of 2003, so that technically makes you cut off as well. Again, the automatic transmissions can be problematic, not as bad as the dodges, but there’s still problems there. Again, like the dodges, the ZF6 6 speed manual is a good transmission in those trucks.

My dad has an old Chevy 6.5 turbo diesel and ye let's his employee use it for work. Which means it runs practically all the time. We haven't had any issues with it. It hauls a 100 gallon fuel tank and three tool boxes, also it's longer than the average long bed.

Most of all, the problems with the 6.5 can be fixed. The lack of power was from not using a variable geometry turbo and not having an intercooler.

Thank you for your video. I have a 2002 Ford F-350 with the 7.3L PSD. I LOVE this truck. I'm the second owner to this truck. The previous owner bought it NEW and kept it till he passed away. I can see why he kept it! It has over 340,000 miles and still going strong. I have had to just replace a fuel line and the drain valve on it. The fuel gage did stop working awhile back.. I figure it's the control module or whatever thing it is that send the signal to the gage. I just keep an eye on the miles I drive and start looking for a gas station at around 200 miles. The truck is VERY DEPENDABLE. We use it to haul our 30ft camper that weighs over GVWR of 6300. It pulls it like there's nothing back there. We just bought a 33ft travel trailer, and I'm excited to see how it does with it. I couldn't be more happier with this truck. It's been the best truck I've ever had.

My dad has a 6.0 that he bought after the previous owner had already done all of the EGR stuff that generally needs done. So far so good... I have had two 6.2 V8 superduty's and love that motor. For the most part, modern gas motors are more than powerful enough for nearly any job.

The 5.9 Cummings is in fact a better engine. My brother has one and will not let it go, I tried. The 7.3 powerstroke is good, more complicated under the hood.

@@bluecollarred6912 My 21-22 yold Dodge w/Cummins does not have a scrape of rust anywhere. Not all trucks are used in rust belt states! Which from most complaints here on Ytube all brands have this problem. Apparently few clean the under carriage on their vehicles after winter.

I have owned the 7.3 IDI with the Banks turbo. It was great and started well down to 20 degrees without an engine block heater. It was not very powerful but did get the job done.

In his gas trucks video, he said to avoid the 03-15 nissan titans and armadas completely (actually they started in 2004). he explained that the catalytic converter breaks up and the material gets sucked into the engine, causing it to blow up. He didnt even mention that the manifolds crack and need to be replaced. While what he said true, to say to avoid the trucks all together is terrible advice, because the issue is very fixable. All you have to do is replace the manifolds and main catalytic converters for a set of long tube headers, thus eliminating the problem all together. The rest of the truck is pretty much quite solid, well built, and reliable. unless you insist on keeping a vehicle stock no matter what or live in a very emissions heavy state, the trucks shouldnt be completely avoided.

Same here, ordered/bought new a early 99 F250 4x4 crew cab six speed manual 7.3 power stroke, still have it today, showing 240k miles, runs like a top with just basic maintenance. I live in Louisiana, so no rust anywhere. I will keep it until I die...

Its far more addictive and cheaper so they said f the coke lets do this. Thats why they have been in Afghanistan for so long. Thats where the majority of the poppy plants are. The war on drugs has always been BS because they are the ones supplying them.

Only thing I added to truck at purchase time, was 2 extra leaf springs on each side on the rear mend. A lot of towing heavy livestock, back in the day.

I have a 98 Chevy K2500 with a 6.5 L Detroit diesel. It’s been a very reliable engine for me. I did do the preventive modifications like relocating the PMD and adding a heatsink, upgrading the lift pump, and removing the vacuum pump and install a manual waste gate on the turbo. Other than that the engine is bone stock. Haven’t had any problems other than the oil cooler lines leaking but I quickly replaced it. I also relocated the oil filter because they put the filter right over the front drive shaft which makes a big mess. I have 207,000 miles and I’ve been satisfied with it so far.

6.5s actually ARE a good engine just gotta know how to work on them lol. Mine lasted till 276,000. And it didn't have an easy life as it was used to haul goosenecks most its life. On the original injection pump. You can remedy the starter issue if you run the proper bracket on the back. I loved mine just wish I'd gotten it sooner with fewer miles, and could have made it last longer.

This video is almost unwatchable and comes across like click bait. I already know about most of these issues, but he is lumping in all trucks together. The 6.5?! Is he joking? Lol. Just rewire the stupid stuff GM did with the oil pressure switch, pull out the PMD, get a lift pump on there, reinforce the starter (dropped three on the expressway it was so bad), and replace those darn aweful grounds and power wires. None of those mentioned issues have anything to do with the motor. It's always the dressings that GM puts on these things. Lol.

@@aaronschocke2147 lol harmonic balancer is to dampen imbalances in the engine the harmonic part is imbalances will vibrate parts like crank shaft journals and the crank until they break the one installed from the factory fails a lot they make one that's far superior I think it's oil filled. Metal under stress crystallizeses then becomes weak I first found this out at 18 as a goldsmith.

My friend had a 6.0, the injectors turbo and egr cooler went in the same week. He does all the work himself, and it was cheaper to buy a doner truck and we ended up putting in a 24 valve cummins.

You're friend probably never did the preventative maintenance and changed a bunch of parts to bullet proof diesel parts. Those trucks with the right parts changed will last easily over half a million miles & more. The bad oem ficm probably caused the injectors to go bad. The oem egr that originally came from with the truck sucked and the one that came out after was better. The original oil cooler was also garbage. Yes it's pricey for everything but you'll get a truck that last forever. Dealership parts are crucial with these trucks unless your buying bullet proof diesel stuff. Everything on these trucks must be from the dealer unless it's bullet proof diesel. Oil changes you can get away with but you must use the oem oil filter.

@@joeshmoe8952 I'd also add in there, ditch the ford gold coolant and switch to Cat ELC coolant, it's what international uses. The ford gold plugged up 2 oil coolers for me in less than a year, been over a year with the Cat ELC and my EOT/ECT are still within 5 degrees (usually less) of each other.

7.3L IDI Diesel I keep it antifreeze in it. I recommend the 7.3L IDI. Never had a problem. I use a air heater for mine. Straight pipe it then remove the soup bowl.

@@idiguy6677 they some very torqy trucks. I've had a dodge commins 12v and it didn't seem to be as torqy as my IDI. Oh, I just put duallies on mine.

Thank you for giving us your experience shaped opinions on this dilemma. All trucks have their quirks. It’s up to us, yes, it’s our responsibility to research what we want to spend our money on. It’s our RESPONSIBILITY in a free market to educate ourselves before we purchase anything. In a time of easily accessible information, how can we not? I spent two years reading on all that was available at the time on manual trans diesel trucks back in 06 to 08. I settled on the Cummins. I knew what things cost annually, and what was available for quality aftermarket solutions. I got my 02 2500 manual everything 2nd gen in 08 with 40k on it. I’ve built my business with it. I’m still driving it daily for my business hauling my tool trailer or my dump trailer daily(self employed carpenter) it’s got 300k on it now. Many upgrades to make it more durable, efficient or reliable. As far as investment, we all need to understand that vehicles are a DEPRECIATING asset. It is hole in the road witch you choose to pour your money into, and you will never get it back, operating costs included. So it really comes down to experience, what are your”smiles per mile”? If you are intent on “marrying “ your truck like I do. You will recoup some inherent financial loss . But not much. So take your time, educate yourself on what is important to you, and buy as smart as you can.

Love the channel, you pointed out a lot of the big issues. Bottom line is its going to cost more money to keep a diesel going. The biggest pitfall for people it not servicing the vehicle in a timely fashion, or adding a 200 hp tune to a stock vehicle.

I was in love with diesels with the positive experience in Toyota diesels in the past. Now living in US seriously considering to buy diesel. After watching this video I guess I will continue to have gas and be happy with it.

Stick with Toyota’s then. They are the best. But diesels can be great too and much more fuel efficient. My 03 Sierra Duramax 2500 has 260,000 miles and haven’t had any issues since almost new. I have a 2005 Land cruiser with almost 300,000 miles and it’s been absolutely flawless but it’s a gas hog lol. Still I love it more then the Sierra

@@805NAVE sadly USA don't have any Toyota diesels. 100 series Land cruiser is an amazing vehicle, 200 even better with all the luxury features but does not have the fuel range to my liking. I have 4Runners and their fuel range is not bad with a 23gal tank but cannot compare to something like a Prado with a turbo diesel with a whopping 150L (39gal) diesel tank or a Land cruiser 70 series with a 180L (47.5gal) diesel tank. The cost to convert the gas Toyota's to diesel is questionable to be and it would be a hassle to find parts if I needed to unless I live in Texas near to that facility. As for your Sierra I see Duramax has bit more advantage over Cummins when it comes to reliability here right? But its a hot topic where diesel boys fight against each other. I'm a big fan of Diesel Power Challenge as well. Its like porn and after watching each episode its hard not to buy a diesel. Will see, its hard when you grew up loving diesel and coming here not having a diesel.

@@LionRunner I hear ya. Grew up loving diesel trucks and cars, visiting Europe often. Always knew I wanted a diesel as an adult. I agree, generally, the newer (post-03) US diesel trucks have lots of quirks/problem areas and some should be bought carefully and with some knowledge going into the purchase arena. But in the last 5yrs or so, I think the EPA systems have gotten much more reliable, if you decide to keep them attached. Subsequently, if they fall off your truck entirely, the newer trucks seem nearly bulletproof. The CP4 fuel pumps can fail because the US diesel isn't as slick as the rest of the world, so using high-volume/trafficked fuel stations and a good demulsifying additive is key, there. The Cummins is ultra reliable, and they've switched back to the CP3 fuel pump after only 2 model years (19/20) with the cp4. So... Long story short... In the US, you can either buy any 20+ year old Japanese diesel truck from an experienced importer, buy any pre-emissipns (generally, pre-04) US diesel truck, or any year cummins, 2013+ ford, if you can risk turning off the emissions gear, and enjoy a generally reliable truck with proper filter changes and being smart about your fuel stations/additives. I don't know much about Duramax but seems like their latest offerings are using a reliable, non-Bosch fuel pump after many cp4 failures. And the older iterations of their mated-to Allison transmission were awesome. That's all I got, good luck!

I have an 01 dodge 2500, 24v Cummings 356K miles and still going. Took care of the "killer dowel pin" potential issue and have added after market fuel pump and she runs strong. I really appreciate your channel!

When the glow plug controller died on my 84 F250 I bought good 12 volt glow plugs and put a push button on the dash. The original setup used 6 volt plugs that liked to burn and swell, they also HAMMERED the batteries hard during the glow plug cycle with huge current draw. You have to run the 12v plugs longer, but the total current draw is easier for the batteries to give in cold weather, and the extra time soaks the heat in the cylinder for a better cold start. I ended up with a 2003 6.0L (mostly because of the service box), It has taken $11k-$12k to keep the SOB running over the last 5 years even though I have done A LOT of the repairs in house. I did use a shop on two occasions (all 8 injector job, and oil cooler which also did egr and HPOP for extra $1k since digging in to get to any one of those three is about $2k-$3k in stripping labor.) All in $10k to the shop and $1k-$2K in parts and time at home. A side note to the head bolts on 6.0L, I am pretty sure that Navi did the engineering right. I would be willing to bet that anyone who had trouble with head gaskets on these turned up the HP well past stock....... The bolts are probably fine at stock..... but it is too easy to turn up the HP and then whoopsie!!! I wont call them a great idea, but the fault lies with aftermarket tuning on this one. OK stock, tune at your own risk...

Basically if you want a stone dead reliable truck get a 92-97 250 rip the gasser or diesel out & put in a 5.9 12v.

Owned a 7.3 IDI in Iowa and it lasted me 5 years. Drove it into the ground. Replaced the glow plugs 2x, fuel filter a few times, injectors 1x, and idler pulley and batteries once. Including buying the truck and the parts that went into it, I had about 3k into the truck over 5 years time. Always ran good. Always started in the winter, even when Temps were in the -10 degree range. The trick for me was running light weight synthetic oil in the winter and cheap dino oil from spring to fall. Eventually sold because my wife bought a newer vehicle and we didn't need it any more. The guy before me and myself both ran the correct antifreeze though, so cavitation wasn't an issue, even on a nearly 30 year old truck.

I just sold a 2004 f250, 320 k. Very little work done on it! I know it’s rare, but, it was also a fast and strong truck! Loved it!

6.0 237k miles, no issues at all other than injector #2 sticks every once in a while. Easy fix, just haven’t gotten to it. 6.0’s are wicked awesome if you take care of it.

A clean, rust free 5.9 Cummins or 7.3 Powerstroke goes for big money these days. Although they are great trucks, the supply is much lower than the demand thus raising the prices.

@@kingssuck06 i got my 12V for 1800$.... 1996 3500. Single cab. Every single body panel needs to be replaced along with the front cab mounts, and the engine has 384k miles. Thinking of selling it or parting it out and keeping the motor

agree with everything except the take on the 7.3/6.9 they are essentially the same engine, keep up with coolant SCA's on the 7.3 and cavitation is a non issue. The 7.3 has larger headbolts as the 6.9 can be prone to weeping/blown head gaskets esp if a turbo is installed and they had some weaker blocks on the earliest 6.9's that could crack from using the block heater. The return lines on both are prone to leaking and its just something to keep an eye on the kits to redo them are very affordable. Overall the IDI's are a good workhorse of an engine not huge on power but will get the work done.

Thank you, we remote tent camp with our kids. I have been tossing around a Diesel van since I our montero full size gets 14 mpg, it's is all arb'd. You just gave me lot's of caution on changing thing's around, it maybe old and slow but Monty is capable. If the engine dies I might put a Isuzu diesel in it of something more modern.

I have a 6.0l powerstroke excursion and I love it. Granted, when we rebuilt the engine we completely bulletproofed it top to bottom.. Runs awesome now. Other than the block there are almost no Ford or International parts left.

@Assembled Existence The 6.0 will go over half a million miles with no problem. Yes it will cost money to replace all the parts that ford screwed up on originally but all those parts have been upgraded such as the camshaft push rods, oil cooler, egr, etc. I would just replace everything possible bulletproof diesel parts and the rest from the dealer.

I agree with everything, the 6.5 has its faults but when those faults are fixed/upgraded its a great truck. Leroy diesel and quadstar have a lot of good products that fix those issues. The p400 block is also great fixed the weak webbing. Also a lot easier/cheaper to "bulletproof" a 6.5 vs a 6.0 powerstroke

Two 6.0’s in our family... an 03 and 04. Both are over 200k miles, stock, tow 13k pounds (each 😉) and still run perfectly. Delete EGR cooler, update oil cooler, coolant filter, blue spring for fuel pressure, regular fuel filter changes and oil changes, Archoil for fuel and oil, and you’ve got a truck that will perform reliably. You cannot baby a 6.0. IT NEEDS TO WORK or else the turbo gets “sticky” and the intake gets filled with soot. Also, the biggest problem with 6.0’s is the unqualified mechanics who try to work on them. By the way, head gaskets on both of our trucks are original and are not blown. Several friends of mine have these trucks too and have no problems after the above mentioned corrections. Do the math... pay $10k for one, invest $5k in it to ensure reliability. Or, go out and spend $70k on a new one. If you don’t like doing preventative maintenance on a Diesel engine, do not buy a 6.0 Powerstroke. SUBSCRIBED. Love your delivery man it’s the best.

@@joesgarage2493. The way I look at it is that for the money you buy and “bulletproof” one you could have bought a better more reliable diesel for the same money if not cheaper and not waste 5k to make it a “good” diesel.

Its cost prohibitive to daily drive a fullsize truck in general if you don't need it, I did it for years. I now have a Prius C for a daily/commuter. $25 worth of gas a month. I keep the truck for truck stuff only.

Yeah I have an e550 Mercedes which is my gas guzzler. Also have a Toyota Tacoma pickup for when I need to haul stuff. Don’t need a gas guzzling V8 pickup at that point
