Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - 1987 World Figure Skating Championships, Ladies' Long Program - Caryn Kadavy of the United States skated a wonderful program here to place 3rd in the Long Program. She would move up from 5th to 3rd Place overall.

She was probably the best overall skater of her era in terms of skills. Shame about what happened in the Olympics when she got sick.

I luv that Scott mentions her beautiful line and polished finished moves and positioning. I've seen too few skaters who have these unique qualities. I've a feeling even if Karyn did that last triple toe loop jump she still would've finished behind Katarina and Debi. The scoring is just so biased.

unfortunately she doubled a few jumps. however, her beauty, grace, and balletic posture and style are breathtaking and epitomize the best of Ladies' figure skating. i love the fact that back then the choreography was not full of excessive and overly dramatic head, arm, hand, and leg movements which sometimes border on the frenetic (yes, i am talking about the Russian ladies these days).

It's a shame watching this knowing what happened to her at the Olympics a year later. But at least she had a fine pro career and a long one at that. If I remember correctly I recall her being in professional competitions nearly 10 years after this. She was always lovely to watch.

What was the Finish judge thinking? 5.4? way too low for the amount of spectacular jumps and overall performance standard.

Caryn is a skater I can look back on and say she legitimately deserved to be a champion. For as artistic as she was, you could see she certainly loved to fly through the air. Her jumps, her spins, choreography and presentation, were second to none. It has always been a headscratcher for me why Caryn was often scored so low, yet she was technically more proficient than Debbi (Caryn's double axel flew across the ice, Debbi's didn't - Caryn flew into her triple loop, Debbi crawled into hers only to two-foot the landing often); and Caryn was certainly more artistic that Jill Trenary who was deemed by who knows who as some great artist on ice. Pah-lease. (I have nothing personal against Jill, but I strongly feel she benefitted from the fact that she was conventionally "pretty." Sometimes, it's as simple as that folks.) Because on paper, it's not adding up. Jill had had a shaky double axel. When she did her triples they were just okay. The excitement was that she landed the jumps. And don't give me that crap about the figures. We don't know what Jill's figures looked like. For all we know they could have been a hot mess. That part of the competition was rarely broadcast live. For me red flags started after Caryn had landed triple loops (often performed at very high speeds), in several major international competitions under great pressure, yet she's coming behind Jill? Knowing what we know about the corruption in judging, I'm sure they wanted Jill as their champion in the U.S., and the fix was in. They couldn't legitimately keep Debbi down because by 1987 Debbi was raining world champion, and Debbi's figure, without a shadow of a doubt, were always superior. Everyone from Brian Boitano to many others in the skating world have raved about Debbi's prowess in figures. Added to that, Debbi was spitting out triple triple combinations. So, U.S. figure skating had to find another target. And that's where I think Caryn comes in. Not saying Caryn was always great. But when I look back on this golden era and I rank who the truly great skaters were, I would have to say: Caryn, Debbi THEN Jill - and then everybody else.

I agree that Caryn is one of the finest skaters in the history of the sport. But head to head against Jill, Jill usually performed better on her jumps. Just watch videos of their competitions in 1987 and 1988.

SO underrated as a skater. Debi Thomas does not push on her crossovers and Caryn flies across the ice. Her posture is gorgeous, her moves finished, her spins hit beautiful positions. Look at the speed she had coming out of the opening double-Axel. Heartbreaking that she did not get to skate at 88 Olympics.

Beautiful artistic skating! She should have won the Silver. What's with the low 5.4 score from the Finnish judge? This was a strong 5.7 technical program and easily 5.8 artistically. Caryn's crux has always been her triple jumps, but she did four here and reduced that last jump to a double. If she had added one more, she would've gotten the Silver.
@richardross4677
@richardross4677 5 жыл бұрын
If the judging was fair she should win gold had she dont the last 2 jumps. She would have 5 triples like Witt but 2 of hers triple loops which are harder while Witt had only 1. Witt probably wins on reputation though, and Caryn wins silver in that case.

It always made me wonder, what Kadavy could of done if she did not get sick the next year in Calgary at the 1988 Winter Olympics. With a program like this with her beautiful skating, Caryn Kadavy could have beaten Katarina Witt, Liz Manly, and Debi Thomas. It is just to bad that she could not skate that free skate program or one equal to this one in 1987 at those Olympic Games. If she would have won and defeated Witt, what an upset.
@richardross4677
@richardross4677 5 жыл бұрын
Actually with the figures and short program standings she would not have won a medal in Calgary even with winning the long program unfortunately. She would have needed to win the long and Debi be 6th in the long to win the bronze (Debi was 4th in the long over Jill on a 5-4 split so presumably would be no lower than 5th in the long).

She was placed behind Witt and Thomas here, even with this skate. I disagreed, particularly being behind Thomas, but she was. And Manley at the Olympics was incredible and had a triple lutz. I highly doubt she is placed over either Manley or Witt at the Olympics even with this skate. She would have beaten Thomas's LP at the Olympics since Thomas had a meltdown but she was so far behind coming in the LP there she never catches her either. Plus as someone already said she was too far behind going into the LP to medal mathematically even winning the LP in Calgary. She would have now been 1st in the long to Debi's 5th, and even that does not make it up since 50% of the scoring was already done and with her 7th in figures to Debi's 2nd and 5th in the short to Debi's 2nd, she was slightly more than 4 long program placements worth of ordinals behind.

I would have had this first in the free skating, even with the single axels. she did 4 triples in total, and 3 were different ones!! Maybe if she didn't single the axels she would have been first...
@hairbrush81
@hairbrush81 11 жыл бұрын
You are wrong. Had she done those 2 jumps she would have won for sure. She would have had more technical content than Witt (or Thomas) with 5 triples and 2 triple loops. Her artistry was great, so there is no reason had she done the last 2 jumps she shouldnt have and probably wouldnt have clearly won.
