UPDATE: apparently the focus works differently on the Mavic. I played with it this morning and I was able to get much much sharper images. Not super intuitive but the difference is noticeable. i posted a pic here -- twitter.com/CaseyNeistat/status/781527005615579136

I just contacted DJI support and they told me that your mavic is not a final product yet. They said your Mavic has some type of lens issue and it should look more like the Phatom's image quality. Thanks for clearing this up :)

i do thnk the Mavic yields a better image in better conditions but i still can't imagine it will ever be as good as the Phantom. If i had to guess it looks like the Mavic is doing some post capture stabilization which crops the image (hence the narrower image) and gives a lower resolution in the process. I am most excited to really play with the Karma. Gopro has been making video cameras for 5 years and the Hero can capture amazing in all conditions.

Casey, this was the best and sharpest vlog I've seen in forever. Please keep dropping that 4k heat. (There was always weird artifacting on the edges today, maybe the MK4 doesn't like lenses that wide)

The Mavic was not properly focused and therefore looks much softer then it should. I posted 4K example footage on my channel to clear up any questions or concerns. Its the 2nd to last video I posted called "DJI MAVIC: 4K Test Footage"

Casey definitely knows, he posted about it on twitter. But the issue is now between this blog and and the previous one, about 3.5 million people now think the Mavic footage is terrible. I am sure he will address this tomorrow. The least Casey should have done is commented on this video and posted about the mistake in the description to let people know.

If you look on the picture he posted on twitter, it's not as big as a gap as what's in the vlog. It's a lot sharper, but the Phantom 4 does have truer colors.

That's not Karma. At all. Karma is a drone with image stabilization. That is a HERO5 Session. This is misleading

Sorry Casey. I know you love the convenience, but I think you're just trying to convince yourself the image quality of the Mavic is "good enough". I honestly think it's awful which makes the convenience worthless. I don;t enjoy watching that footage. I'd say the image quality is on par with upscaled 720p. Have you compared the quality with footage shot on other Mavics? Possibly yours is faulty?

and it has a cooler (blue) tone.. it's kind of weird. Like an instagram filter. it'll be weirder when in the vlog the dslr shots transitions to the drone shots & vice versa

There's just a world of difference between the sharpness and contrast between both of them. Also, the skyline looks smudgy in the Mavic at 8:14, while the Phantom is as sharp as it can get.

I think it's because it's not out yet, so there could be a issue with the Prodotype of the Drone. It's not the finished Product.

I read this too. The Mavic is intended to be focused on something which I think is leading to this softness. Hardware wise, it's stated the Mavic has the exact same sensor as the P4.

Yes, and to get a comparable image, Casey should've focused into the far distance, which would set it to effective infinity, like the P4.

Casey, Your Mavic is broken. The image qual. shouldn't look like that. Plenty of reviews showing that it is equal to or better than the P4. It's actually the same camera on both drones, except the mavic has new faster glass. *Update*: It was a focus issue - which Casey has mentioned on his twitter. Look forward to some new crisp footage soon :-)

If you check Casey's Twitter, he posted a picture of what the Mavic footage actually looks like. Casey accidentally didn't focus the image properly. The Mavic actually has a really good camera. Just wait. In the next day or two, I'm sure Casey will upload a video showing what the Mavic actually looks like. i.e. with the camera is in focus this time

Casey's right, it's cumbersome as hell and not ideal for traveling, but it does also carry my laptop, GoPro, chargers, DSLR camera and shotgun mic, along with other miscellaneous items. So, as a *vlogger*, the backpack actually works out quite well for traveling with all my gear! For Casey's needs, I totally understand his decision to go with the *Mavic*. Convenience is incredibly nice, especially when he's already carrying around his large camera rig all day, EVERYWHERE!

Casey you gotta get in touch with DJI and figure out whats wrong with your Mavic. They have stated this is the same sensor as what is in the P4. The glass is a little different but that shouldn't create such softness and off temperature color. If you're footage is correct, DJI is going to get a lot of these shipped back.

I don't believe that this image quality will be the same found in the production model. There might be some AF issue or something that can even be corrected by a firmware update. Makes no sense having same sized sensors as the P4 and having such different image quality.

What's wrong with his Mavic is that he has not set the focus. The Mavic Pro is user-focusable (which granted, is different than other DJI hardware). He only needs to set the focus to infinity, and either doesn't realize it, or doesn't care.

Color is definitely better on the phantom, but that's not a surprise. What I can't get over is the sharpness on the mavic though. I can only see one of two possibilities, the camera on the mavic is out of focus, or it doesn't have a 4k camera, because that image looked like it was 720p at best.

the image sensor on the mavic is the same as in the phantom 4. Only the lens on the mavic is a "smaller" one. But i could not see if he removed that protection dome... i have already seen sharper footage made with the mavic.

Honestly I feel like Casey's love for DJI based on his relationship with them had a slight impact on why he was so "WOW"d with the Mavic because honestly the footage looks very average...hoping there was something going on beyond what we know, maybe a firmware update or something will be needed?

I call BS on the "not focused" thing. First, it's a tiny sensor AND comparatively wide angle of view, so it wouldn't need anything special to be focused on those long distance buildings or the bridge etc. It should be already set to something like hyperfocal distance from the factory. Second, if it needs precise manual focusing via the remote when on the air, it's worthless. Third, I've seen some videos from people who maintain the theory and say theirs is "focused", and their footage looks just as soft and crappy as this here does...

It's not a bad unit, it's a bad operator ;) He needs to do the most basic of calibrations, which includes setting focus.

No all of the DJI videos on the new drone aren't great. I'm not trying to hate but the GoPro is so much sharper in 4K. Even if you compare the promo videos which are heavily touched.
