"Cash Sound Illertal" ist eine Johnny-Cash-Tribute-Band, bestehend aus vier Country&Western-Fans im Alter von 16 bis 24 Jahren.

Here's our tribute to Bob Wootton who passed away a few months ago. He was Johnny Cashs guitarist for about 35 years and influenced together with Luther Perkins and The Tennessee Three the classic Cash-Sound like nobody else. Even after Cash passed away it was always Bob's wish to keep the sound alive. We want to go on and do the same the best we can.
We are a Johnny-Cash-Tribute-Band from southern Germany, consisting of Country&Western-fans aged between 16 and 24.

I'm not so much of a Bob fan, I'm a full on Luther fan, studied him for 10 years or even more. But I gotta say, you nailed Bob's style! Reason why I'm not such a fan of Bob is because he really changed the style, made it easier/short cutted things.
@cashfriends

Thanks for your comment! I understand that, I also love Luthers playing. It's a lot more difficult than it appears at first. He definitely deserves a lot of credit for his sound. We're planning to do a Luther-version of this intrumental-medley soon. We'd be happy to hear your opinion on that then. :)

Ten years and you are so mixed up, Bob Wotton did NOT short cut Luther's style he improved it...Luther NEVER could bounce the extra notes in like Bob Wotton did....Yes Luther got better after the first few years, studding his style for 10 years as you say you know he started out with really simple two note lead.(original Folsom Prison etc) and after a while he started using the 3 notes...BUT LUTHER NEVER CAME CLOSE TO WHERE WOOTTON took that style. If you ever got to see WOOTTON the last couple years after Cash died you would have seen him show the difference on stage....it was like Luther the inventor, Wootton the master.....

@@DarkKnight_4805 i felt that Luther, and to a lesser extent Bob, played a unique style that added to the rhythm section more than to the lead. It’s like they made the guitar a new kind of specific rhythm instrument to complement the bass and drums. I do prefer Luther’s style, especially his work say 1960 to 67, but I also think Bob was a better guitar player

THIS is funny..just saw a documentary about Johnny Cash were Jack Clement (worked with Cash and Sam at Sun Studios) said Sam Phillips like the sound Luther was getting with his guitar so much he would take Luther's guitar and keep it when they went home because he did not want Luther practicing and getting any better...

Thanks José, glad to hear about more Country Music fans in Europe. :) We have similar problems here in Germany, Country Music is definitely not the mainstream here and we didn't have the chance to make music for more than a year now. Do you already have some more musicians who are interested in this kind of music? Maybe try a website where you can search for other musicians in your area sorted by music genre. Or start uploading some videos to KZfaq, people might get interested. All the best to you and good luck! :)

Can say I saw Bob Wootton after Cash past playing with his family and a couple others....I sat right in from of him...he played more like "Luther" that night he did not have the bounce like you are showing hear and he played behind Johnny...I did know the difference as Luther did not have the bounce between strings that Bob used to perfection....for some reason Bob was just picking the notes that night, maybe because he was singing the songs??
@gordenscottfan3107
@gordenscottfan3107 5 жыл бұрын
Listen to Man In Black by Johnny Cash and you will hear the greatest example of Bob Wootton playing a super Luther style guitar....Bob Wootton took Luther's style to another level. Luther could only pick the notes, Bob could bounce those notes and stick a few more in as he played that back up guitar about 20 years longer then Luther...
@cashfriends

I agree that Bob definitely developed a more advanced technique compared to Luther over the years. But Luthers style actually isn't that easy as it sounds at first if you really want to nail it. I like them both :)

Luther Perkins had to start from scratch, and figure everything out on his own, and Bob Wooten, took that same sound and just jassed it up a bit. Now being a guitar picker and huge Johnny Cash fan myself, I appreciate both styles! Some songs I like bobs picken better and some songs I like Luther's style better! Both are nice in their own way.

This straight up sounds like him! I love this, and would like to play like this. I can do some Luther Perkins, but not this. how do you get this sound, what kind and gauge stings do you use? what kind of pedals and amps did you run it through in this video?

Thank you so much! This was a long time ago, but I remember using my Fender Mustang III back then. I took the preset of a Fender Princeton and tweaked the settings for a while. With the volume between 4-5, treble around 7 and bass around 3 you should be pretty close with any Fender amp and a tele. I didn't use any effects except some amp reverb. And usually a play a string set of 10s. For Luther Perkins flatwounds, for Bob wootton regular wound strings. Hope that helps. :)

Thank you, Tom! I have to admit, I bought this guitar about 7 years ago, when I didn't know anything about the technical aspects of a guitar. So unfortunately I didn't ask the guy who built and sold it much about it. I just knew I wanted a B-Bender Telecaster and found this one on ebay. But I can tell you this much, as you might know already, it's based on the Clarence White Tele that Marty Stuart owns now. So it's wired like a standard telecaster but the neck pickup is from a stratocaster. The b-bender unit is built in an hollow wooden body like on the original. The amp I used on this recording is a Fender Mustang III, so a quite cheep modeling amp. I used the preset of a 59' Fender Bassman and had the gain at around 4, treble at 4, mid on 5, bass on 3-4, reverb at around 3. A tube amp might sound different, of course. Anyway, I hope that helps a bit. Feel free to ask if you want to know anything else. :)
