Hi everybody and welcome back to the channel!
I know, it has been a long time since our last video, sorry for that... A lot has changed but we're still in love with Country Music and of course the sound of Johnny Cash. So today I thought I'll give you a quick comparison video on the different ways Johnny's guitarists played the famous Folsom Prison Blues solo over the years. I know, there were a few more like Kerry Marx who filled in for Bob Wootton from 1989 to 1992 or Carl Perkins who took over for a few months after Luthers tragic passing in 1968. But I would say these are the main styles how to play the Folsom-solo and I didn't want to bore you with going through the same solo a fifth or sixth time. ;)
We're working on more video projects like the Luther Tribute Medley and also some exciting new stuff we'd love to share with you later this year.
Let me know if you enjoyed the video and if you have a request for other videos, maybe song comparisons like this one or something else.
Thanks for supporting us!

I love how fast paced Mr Bob Wootton was, may he rest in peace. Luther Perkins had a very unique sound that could never be matched. R.I.P Mr Perkins.

Luther owned the sound, but Bob Wootton had command of the style, just listen to Bob's playing on "Man In Black" perfect example of how powerful that lead guitar cadence could OWN the back round.

Incredible playing man, super recreation of all their styles. I started a few months ago and am still struggling through the Luther Perkins version lol, but it really is my favorite cause of that old school twang you really capture here. Maybe consider a tutorial vid in the future to expand on these? I'd def watch it! Haha, Cheers!

Bravo! Being a huge Johnny Cash fan since August 1968, ( I even attended June‘s funeral ) I can readily distinguish between Luthers playing and Bob’s . And fellow, you have it down pat !!! Bob always throws in a few more notes. I read somewhere that Bob’s picking style is a cross between Luther and Scotty Moore.

Was lucky to see Bob Wootton play as the Tennessee three (with his family) some years after Cash's passing....was so happy as I was seated right off the stage right under Bob....only thing was Bob played more like Luther Perkins that night, I had seen him play with Cash Show many times and he played MUCH better...I think it was because he was singing the songs while playing...not so much bounce in his cadence more the Luther steady picking style.....

@@cashfriends Have to add even tho they needed him for the other three backing Reggie Young ruined the Johnny Cash portion of the Highwaymen show for me in Vegas. You 100% know how great Luther, and Bob's sound was behind Johnny Cash when someone messed with the sound like Reggie did.....
@jeffdixon847

This was really helpful and very well done. I wouldn’t normally group Marty in with these guys as he was the third, then second guitarist in the group. I the first guitarist playing the boom chicka boom sound was Luther then Bob then Kerry then Bob again. Plus as you note, Reggie who did the Luther parts in the highwaymen. Regardless, you really nailed these guitar voices from Johnny’s bands. When Carl joined in 65, he was a second lead guitarist playing flashier solos, but never the Folsom Prison type stuff. Jerry Hensley took that seat from around 1975-84. Marty joined on Mandolin in 1980, but would occasionally get to do a solo on something like Doin’ My Time. He was briefly the second guitarist after Jerry left, but Bob was still doing the Luther stuff. Jim Soldi succeeded Marty, and then Marty came back briefly around 1990 with the Mystery of Life album.

Excellent. You nailed everyone’s style perfectly. Except, Marty’s legs move a lot more than yours did. Haha I used to play with WS Holland, I will tell you, Luther was loved by that band family. Do you have a reference for Carl Perkins? He filled in, as you know, between Luther and Bob.

Haha, you're defenitely right about Marty's leg movement! :) That's great, I wish I'd had the chance to meet some of Johns band members. Yes, I thought about including a Carl Perkins version, but I couldn't match his sound how I wanted to. I guess I need an Epiphone for that. ;)

I had the volume on my Fender Tonemaster Deluxe Reverb at around 4, treble at 7, bass at around 4-5, reverb at 2-3. No pedals. If I could choose an amp I would prefer the Fender Twin Reverb (the tonemaster version will do just fine in my opinion, but of course the original tube amp will have the purest sound). Every amp is a little different, so you just have to play around a little bit with it. And as frustrating as that always sounded to me - most of the sound is in the fingers. Just study Bob's technique as closely as possible and the sound will reveal itself more and more. Good luck! :)

Hi! All I have to say is your videos are fantastic! You have got the Johnny Cash sound down like no one else! I have a special request - could you PLEASE consider making backing tracks for your songs? I am a multi tribute artist and Johnny Cash is one of my tributes ( and there are quite a few Cash tribute artists out there), and I am desperately needing to find the best authentic sounds available for my show! The cheap-sounding karaoke is horrible! The guitar work is sloppy and not authentic, the drum work has a lot to be desired, is fake etc. Not only are you the BEST sounding Cash guitar player out there in the different guitar styles and eras, but you even have the drums down and your drummer sounds exactly like WS Holland! If you could record the full track for: Folsom Prison Blues (all versions like you just played especially the fast "prison" versions) I Walk The Line (All versions) Ring Of Fire Rock Island Line Big River Blistered I would be forever In your debt! I would gladly pay you for them, and I'm sure others would too! Your medleys are also second to none! PLEASE do this for us, as you have already the guitars and drums! Save us pros from karaoke hell! Contact me privately here! I'm looking forward to speaking with you! Keep up the phenomenal job!
