My favorite Luther Perkins, love the “simplicity”. Listening to him since 1958 totally unique sound brought to the stage.

Luther had a habit of palm muting his strings, as his guitar had no working volume knob (according to Marshall's memoir).

my favourite cover of big river is either the san quentin version or the one where cash adds in the 3rd verse that was cut out because it was too long when they recorded it

This straight up sounds like him! I love this, and would like to play like this. I can do some Luther Perkins, but not this. how do you get this sound, what kind and gauge stings do you use? what kind of pedals and amps did you run it through in this video?

Thank you so much! This was a long time ago, but I remember using my Fender Mustang III back then. I took the preset of a Fender Princeton and tweaked the settings for a while. With the volume between 4-5, treble around 7 and bass around 3 you should be pretty close with any Fender amp and a tele. I didn't use any effects except some amp reverb. And usually a play a string set of 10s. For Luther Perkins flatwounds, for Bob wootton regular wound strings. Hope that helps. :)

 what is your amp settings for the Luther Perkins part
@cashfriends
@cashfriends 4 ай бұрын
I used my Esquire with flatwound strings for Luthers part and plugged it into a Boss FRV-1 pedal. On that I had the mix and dwell on 11 o'clock, tone on 2 o'clock. From there I went straight into my Tonemaster Deluxe Reverb. I think I had my volume at about 4, treble on 7, bass around 1.2 and the amp reverb off. I hope that helps. :)

Loved Bob Wootton playing the Perkins parts behind Cash. "Man In Black" the best ever (try doing a lesson on that?) Was in the front row right under Wootton at one of his Tennessee Three concerts. He did not play the same, more like Perkins, I ask him after the show why he did not sound quite the same as when he backed Cash, he told me well maybe a little less because He was doing the singing and was trying to remember the words.

Nice job, now if you only had a couple woman back-vocals it would be great........ {{{Rev 21:1And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. 2And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. 4And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. 5And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.}}}}

@cashfriends Jerry did most of the lead work for Waylon's earlier RCA albums. From 1965 up to 1968, it was either Jerry or Wayne Moss you'll hear. Chet (Chet Atkins) BARELY let Waylon do lead work in the studio because it wasn't clean cut. Of course live, Waylon did his own lead work. That was 1 reason why Waylon started rebelling against RCA's clean cut ways
