The number of cashpoints available have significantly decreased across the country, despite withdrawals increasing by 20%. At the end of last year more than 40% of ATMs were shut since 2008. The town of Windsor has just one 24-hr ATM machine left.
LINK’s Chief Executive John Howells speaks to Phil Gayle on First Edition to discuss whether the UK is ready to go cashless and the Government's response to the loss of High Street banks.
John Howells says: “We need to protect cash, we are nowhere near ready to go cashless” adding that “once you lose the branches, it is 10 times harder to bring them back.”

Are you worried about the move towards a cashless society?

Even thought those in charge seem to really want it to happen and have total control of our money and how we use it. I really don't see being possible any time soon as too many businesses rely on it for cash flow and normal working.

The Main point is we are not by choice moving to a cashless society, The public are being forced into a cashless society as Big Corp knows data is king, Once cashless they will be able to account for every single penny from it's source to where it is spent' which in turn means they will know every facet of your life and habits.

You all better hope you never become ready. That is unless you want corporations & Govt telling you where you can shop & what you can shop for.

I don't want to go cashless. I want to have a CHOICE of whether to use cash or card. I keep a record of ALL my transactions so don't get into debt. Others may not be as diligent as me.😊

It's a con. Because they all take a cut with cashless. Every shop that uses a card machine the bank takes a percentage every time. So the money you actually receive gets less and less and the bank fees rise. My local shop won't let you pay card for anything less than £3. So going to a shop for milk suddenly becomes a shop for other things too to make up the extra. Bank just taking off the top all the time.

Once all the free cashpoints are gone, charges for the remaining cashpoints will rise exponentially, "discouraging" cash use.....

Get rid of the rich and have cash only and whoever wants to use a card charge them an extra 10% of the purchase

ATM are open to scams like card skimming and shimming. Safer to go into a bank branch or post office for withdrawals. However, with bank branches and post offices closing there are people who have no choice but to use an ATM if they can't do online banking and prefer to use cash only.

The banks deal in classic currencies, a cashless society makes crypto-currency more attractive with their greater privacy, quicker processing for refunds, decentralised system, etc. Than the banks will be die....

Thousands asked for it. Only people I know who are crapping themselves about it are the ones who work cash in hand and don't pay their income taxes. I know a few who do this (one being the partner of a policeman) and they happily gloat about not paying taxes.

A huge chunk of any freedom will go with it. Bad move.

It seems that they are happy to discriminate against the elderly, the poor and those who have no interest in going cashless. Cash gives you freedom. Handing over physical cash puts a truer value on an item, it is going to be easy for younger generation not to know the true value and will get into serious debt, swiping a card has no true meaning to them.
@samanthahardy9903

I agree. With a card it's less painful just tapping it to spend it and you can't see straight away how much you have left. At least with physical cash you can see what you are spending and how much you have left straight away. For me cash is easier and gets me to think what I do or don't spend. Many use cards to pay for things and tap without thinking which results in more people going into debt with overdrafts.

In all reality it's only the tax Dodgers that are crapping themselves over this. I know a few people who work cash in hand and not a single one of them pays the full amount of income tax they're meant to. In fact they love to boast about the fact they don't.
