Orson Welles plays Le Chiffre in the 1967 spy spoof Casino Royale. A colorful travesty, it nonetheless provided a chance for Welles to work in his longstanding talent in magic and theatrics, as well as showcase some fine bits by "James Bond" Peter Sellers.

no lie, Orson Welles wouldve been an excellent Bond Villain in a serious 007 film

I agree. Would have been great to see him play LeChifre in a straight adaptation of the Fleming novel

I seem to recall that Welles refused to do the movie unless he was allowed to perform his magic tricks.

It’s kind of funny how seriously slapstick comedian Peter Sellers took the role of James Bond and how the more acclaimed thespian Orson Welles just goofed around doing magic tricks the whole time. And then how Welles somehow has a better performance anyways.

I read where Sellers and Welles couldn't stand each other, and that they wouldn't play this scene together, so the director had to film each one's scenes separately. In fact, I do believe Peter Sellers walked off the set and never returned before his role was completely filmed, so they had to re-write the "mind torture" sequence to include his death (and used a double in long-shot when Ursula Andress machine-guns him). He was supposed to be in the casino finale with all the fighting and shenanigans. Lucky for them, they'd already filmed the scene at the end where he's walking along in the clouds wearing kilts, spots "Jimmy" Bond (Woody Allen) and blows, sending him down to hell.

Yeah, Sellers was intimidated by Welles and was jealous that the women on the set were more interested in Orson than him. Sellers had recently lost a lot of weight (very noticeable in this movie) and he thought he should have been who they were more attracted to. So silly, really, and a shame because they are an interesting combination.

Sellers was a problem onset even before shooting scenes with Orson. He even shot a blank from a gun into Jacqueline Bisset’s face and injured her after she criticized his accent. Sellers was out of control.

Boy, this makes me sad. This seems like one of the roles Orson would take out of necessity to finance his own works, but which he didn't enjoy or believe in. Though he's the consummate pro, so you would never know it if that was the case.

@alogmail Y'know, this clearly isn't an example of a film so bad it's good. It's a comedy (a parody even) and it's hilarious ... therefore, in its own right, it's a good film.

Good work - like the initial bits with the legendary Bernard Cribbins and Vladek Sheybal (the chap who was in the phone box). Mr. Cribbins is still going at 80 and reminds us (family) of a hero who has been in hospital recently, but is coming home soon.

Hello again, the actor in the phone box was the late Vladek Sheybal. He had a long career; often playing villains and was also in the Gerry Anderson series "UFO" as the head medical officer for several episodes. Sheybal also played the main baddie in the 1971 adventure film "Puppet on a Chain" (Alistair McLean book, about drug smuggling in Amsterdam). This is the one with the mad speed-boat chase around the Amsterdam canals. It's a good old romp and needless to say; the baddie gets blown up at the end (with his speed-boat). We have it on video or DVD somewhere at home - lots of 70s hippies, kipper ties and flares (you get the idea). Strange thing is that Mr. Sheybal is actually buried in a local cemetary near us (Putney Vale in South-West London). He is on the list of notable "residents", as we found out when attending a family funeral a couple of years ago !

Peter Sellers delivery was completely laughable; as an actor he is so overrated and cliche. He's amongst the same bunch of decadence tools like Fred Astaire, Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis.
