Why Casino Guitars won't be at the NAMM Show

The Casino Crew won't be at NAMM this year unfortunately. After two years of record profits by Guitar Makers it seems that the NAMM Show is no longer relevant for them. Baxter and Jonathan break down why that might be a huge miscalculation as the pandemic guitar boom might be slowing down.

This all seems very familiar. E3 was the NAMM of video games. At one time it was a mythical industry-only party. Over the years it has been kind of watered down, and just before the pandemic the big names (Sony, Microsoft, etc) realized they didn't need to actually go to E3. They could rent a theater down the road, have their big press event, and not give any traffic (or money) to the show. Post pandemic, in an era where all of your most effective advertising and all of your sales are done online, it's hard to imagine E3 continuing as anything more than a glorified convention for gamers.

Going to large shows like NAMM is no holiday, i used to work in the consumer electronics industry and dreaded the shows. Yes it is a great way to see the latest products and meet the people that you have only spoken to on the phone or skype, but the sheer size of these shows drains you. My advice is book a relaxing holiday, and enjoy it.

Jonathan wearing a Music Villa shirt... thought Tony Polecastro was a guest host today 😂😂 Some of the return to pre-Covid NAMM likely has to do with the venues available. In the LA/OC areas, once a venue is vacated, there is another vendor/organization waiting to fill the gap, especially when it comes to multiple days. NAMM likely could not return to January because the dates were not available.

Let’s be honest just like E3 and computer games, the internet allows companies to direct market to the customer for pennies. I used to work in the Garden industry in the UK and there was a big trade show called GLEE in Birmingham. After a while it became obvious you were travelling all that distance to see a bunch of new packaging without stock in it for a salesperson to say they’d come and see you directly. Plus each stand was £250,000-£1m to exhibit on. If you want to cut costs, this is the first thing to go.

I’m bummed that we are not getting a Summer NAMM here in Nashville, since I usually get to go-although last year’s Summer NAMM show was a sad joke of a show. Pitiful lack of manufacturers at that show. I walked the entire show floor in 15 minutes. The only time I’ve been to Winter NAMM was the 2011 show, so I could see some McPherson guitars that we designed the fretboard inlays for.

Yeah Dallas was pretty kickass this year! It was also notable that Taylor had a booth. I hope we continue to see more manufacturers send a few dudes with a handful of guitars just as a presence to the swap meet shows. It was great to bullshit with those guys, and they were a super helpful resource in pricing one of the guitars I brought to sell. That’s def a much cheaper option than going to NAMM for EVERYONE.

Went to NAMM a few years ago as the guest of a small manufacturer. I had been wanting to go forever, I had a blast, and picked up some cool stuff! However, that’s one of those things I only need to do once. It was so loud on most of the show floors that earplugs were mandatory (like the worst imaginable day at Guitar Center), and too crowded to move around. However, absolutely worth going once for the music geek.

NAMM won't go away... at least, the winter portion. Historically it's when manufacturers will peddle their new models, in many cases get an opportunity to see clients just that 1x a year as well as sniff out what the competitor is doing. However, if one would go back 5 years, then MI trade show scheduling was just insane: Jan California Mar/Apr Germany June Nashville Oct Shanghai (Not to mention the countless regional trade shows) The cost of being present at these shows as a manufacturer is insane, and most dealers opted for the winter NAMM show anyway as it is almost always nice weather in Anaheim that time of year. So no, I doubt that there is an end coming to trade shows, the yearly one will stay in Anaheim... or, who knows, they decide that every 2 or 3 years they will move the Anaheim location to one of the ones mentioned above... Also, Fight Club remains a gem even 20 years later!!!

I think it’s a simple as COVID numbers are down in the summer months. That’s why they are starting it back in the summer. As far as the big players not going, they just don’t want to spend NAMM show money when they’ve been killing it with online sales. But I think that will change quick when all of that ends here pretty soon.

Do you really think online sales will slow? I don't. People are too used to it now. Look at all the time and money companies are putting into KZfaq demos. They don't need to wait for NAMM to introduce products, or spend money on ads and promotion. Just send a few to the KZfaqrs. Look at the views the new Universal Audio pedals got this week. All because of KZfaq.

@@mikecorey8370 I guess it depends on how much people are wanting personal interactions with other actual humans. Online sales have been big for years, even before “the sickness”. However, humans actually want interactions and to touch and feel and hear things live. Buying online from nameless faceless websites is going to dry up. I base this on the fact that every guitar store in Dallas is packed full of people almost daily. People want human contact.

If memory serves me right COVID was still pretty strong problem in January and before for NAMM to decide to have it. Look at the Nashville Namm in 2021. They couldn't have that disaster again. I think the big boys should have supported NAMM and NAMM should of worked with them to make it a success. NAMM is an important part of the Music business and should be supported but NAMM has to work with them. Can you imagine the rental fee on the entire Anaheim Convention center for 3 or 4 days with security and other expenses to make it work? I hope its successful and people will not "bash it". Its always been a one of a kind event.

Kinda sounds to me like the big names are making a power play. By not showing up they suck the life out of the show and all those random, small maker items that could wind up being a breakout hit won’t get the exposure they need to make it happen. And from your perspective, no new unexpected networking opportunities. I don’t know anything about anything but it feels like a mistake to forgo NAMM, especially when you’re being very explicit that it’s primarily because PRS and Fender won’t be there. But of course those guys live to hear you say it.

No crazy NAMM stories about weird, angry people you meet from Casino Guitars this year?! Noooooo!! 😭😭😭😭 (Anyone know if Phil from NYG is going cause he also always comes back with the funniest NAMM stories about people he’s somehow pissing off one way or another lol.) I agree that the need to go back to the twice a year thing like always. I said it as soon as they announced this once a year thing. I also think NAMM should organize a petition to show interest in the big players returning to the show - and make a video of people attending this year explaining why big brands should return to post with that petition. I know the big brands don’t need NAMM, but they’re missing part of the point from the customers’ point of view - there is a thing to showing off what’s to come to the and pleasing the fanboys/nerds, meeting with smaller vendors, helping create relationships with KZfaqrs (and giving them an opportunity to make more content of their stuff at NAMM - hello free advertising and hype!), etc. NAMM should also make attending more attractive to the big brands by organizing special events that are just for each one of them - concerts with their artists, the opportunity to provide special history classes and playing workshops for attendees and smaller gear-makers (education totally appeals to Mr. PRS himself - I mean, look at his yearly conference), etc. But ultimately, it was a big mistake not going back to twice a year this past year. I’d argue spring on the East Coast and Fall on the West Coast when weather is most mild and making it easier for people to travel to at least one of those conferences. I also understand the airfare is wicked this year because of the various “events” in our world, but it would help if NAMM helped arrange group rates for travel with the help of a few travel agents - airlines usually just need 10-20 people to qualify for reduced rates, and the rates drop significantly with larger groups. Get some people to meet at the airport for the same flight and there’s a group that saved those people a nice chunk of change. For people traveling from large cities, you may even have enough people to fill an entire NAMM plane which also often drops the rate. Or if you get individuals to book through a couple of specific airlines, even without doing the above, those airlines may be willing to drop the price being that hundreds to thousands of people are traveling to the same event (even if not flying together as an official group). NAMM could even hook up with companies like Expedia and Travelocity to secure the best possible rates. In many cases, KZfaqrs cited the expense at the primary reason they could not attend this year - ThreeChordDave was ready to travel from Ireland, but when he priced the hotel and airfare, he said that would have been several thousand dollars before even buying the NAMM passes, paying for food, etc. NAMM could probably help KZfaqrs get press/media rates for airline and hotel to drastically reduce the cost. I mean there’s so much more to be said, but those things would make a huge impact. The event is and should always be about brands making professional connections and showing off their upcoming products . . . but NAMM needs to put more emphasis on guitar players, fanboys, nerds, etc. along the lines of Comic Con (minus the Cosplay lol). If they make NAMM more player-centric, more guitar players and gear nerds will show up.

NAMM and other shows of this type might look like fun, but they are not the best way to see and try the latest gear. Most stands will only let you look at their new models, you are not allowed to play them, unless you are known to the vendors. The samples on show are the best they can make, the ones you can buy are not as good. Save your money and energy, and wait until you can play the gear that is of interest, i have often been very disappointed when i finaly get to see and play the so called must have new gear. The PRS Siver Sky SE was a classic example, i just couldn't bond with it in the store.

Things change. Remember when the 3 t.v. networks thought cable was a joke? Who's going to pay to watch t.v.? With the internet and onmline ordering, maybe NAMM isn't needed anymore. KZfaq demos have taken the place of going to the store and trying out 15 overdrive pedals, amplifiers, etc. You go to NAMM, see stuff you really want in your store, and then have to wait 6 months to get it. By then, a lot of the excitement has worn off. How do you tell your customers about this new thing, but then have to tell them they can't get it. So, yeah, maybe NAMM is no longer needed.

NAMM is more than guitars fellas. The big guitar manufacturers just don't need it anymore ,so it's not worth spending the $ just the have face time with their venders who they all secretly hate.

I used to go to Guitar shows years ago, it's 99 percent bullshit. It can be cool to interact with manufacturers, but it's just become such a hard sell recently.

I went to see AFI and they were opening for smashing pumpkins. After afi finished I left. I don't care about smashing pumpkins at all. 😂

I 'd rather go to a "local" guitar show and buy, sell, trade, or just b.s. with "normal average" guitar people. The last thing I want to do is walk around NAMM talking to a bunch of snobby big shots, who wont even let you touch they're products. Plus, why would I want to step foot in California, and give those crazies any of my hard earned doe rey me ?
