U r the man. I had an HVAC tech tap in to my cast iron vent pipe in the attic for the condensate line. As a result I had sewer gas smell when the unit turned on. I had to reroute the condensate line to throgh the facial board in to the gutter. I put duct tape to cover the hole but I will use this method as a more permanent solution.

Bob, Thank you so much for the video. My wife and I contracted Covid and two days later our cast iron pipe rusted through and was draining the kitchen sink into the room below. Thanks for the video Bob, I wasn’t sure what to use joining cast iron to pvc. It seems like these epoxy products would work. I don’t have the space to use a collar around it and it will be buried under a basement shower soon. If I epoxy glue I do not need to raise my shower base much more than an inch, with a collar I would be stepping up 5” or more. This was super helpful.

Hello Bob--Just found you tonight. Thanks for good useful info. I have a 1970 brick home on a slab in SE Al. Have got a leak in the drain line--around the kitchen window. Wished I could find someone with a camera to verify. Will try and figure out your email as I would like to communicate. We only have 2 commercial plumbing companies in town. After 28 days of waiting on the first one, I went and paid the invoice for the service call. And have gone to the second one. The second one came out and both said I have a hole in the drain line. Thanks again. Elmer

I have a 12" hairline crack on a horizontal cast iron pipe. Tried JB Water Weld putty (prior to seeing your video), but it never set hard and sealed the leak, assuming because the pipe still had fluid dripping. Cool video. . I had a leak in that cast iron pipe at the seam about 6 years ago. I contacted the chemist at PC7 after the PC7 didn't work. He advised me to use PC Plumbers putty over the seeping area and let it setup. THEN, apply the PC7 over the plumber's putty. The stuff ends up as hard as diamonds, impossible to leak through now. A question: Would JB Water Weld stop a pinhole leak in a copper pipe? Would the procedure I used on the cast iron pipe work on a copper pipe - plumbers putty then PC7? Thanks.

Fernco makes an epoxy pipe "bandage" that wraps the pipe. Excellent stuff. Unfortunately a cracking cast iron pipe will continue to crack as the inside rust pries the sides apart. Replace a cracked cast iron pipe before it spreads to the spigot end...

Quick question. If I have a hole about 1/2" X 1/4" - pipe is not thin - would you press the epoxy slightly into the hole when applying, or would you leave it as flat as possible on the outside of the hole. I'm just wondering how an auger line would respond to the hole on the inside once everything dries.
@BobsPlumbingVideos

I would apply some gentle pressure as to not make it go beyond the inner wall of the pipe, and then fan out the edges using some lacquer thinner.

@BobsPlumbingVideos
@BobsPlumbingVideos 3 жыл бұрын
I mean you can do a tap test by gently tapping with a hammer and you can literally hear the difference between a solid pipe and a thin wall. After years of doing it, you develop an ear for it. But tread lightly, or you'll accidentally put a hole in the pipe. Based on your description, sounds like you have some bad pipe!

I got a 3” cast iron pipe under slab From a pooper.. so i dug up and replacing all pipe up to a point but theres a t junction with the t being a 3-3-1.5” and the 1.5” going up as a vent. The bottom of that t fitting is playing card thin.. and the vent pipe is concreted in the slab and goes through a load bearing wall with the cast iron vent going up 2 stories so the stack has to weigh hundreds.. the fitting is laid ontop of clay soil and a sand bed was covered with gravel and about 3” below slab.. the part of concrete i cut out is on one side of the wall right up to the fitting, which i cut out the pipe going out towards the sewer so the other side goes to the pooper.. What the hell can i do to fix this so it wont soon leak after i put a no hub fitting on it to the new pvc? Epoxy? Figured it would just rust through and leak out around the epoxy unless i coated the whole thing.. im stumped.. dont want to have to dig out all whats needed to replace with the wall bracing, vent bracing.. id have to dig out 100 lbs of material to do...

Hi Bob! I've got a hole in my cast iron vent pipe, about 1" by 1/2".............is that too big to use the putty? There's no actual water running through it but it still leaks a bit- I think it's from condensation.
@BobsPlumbingVideos
@BobsPlumbingVideos 4 жыл бұрын
You could guesstimate the correct amount of epoxy, make sure it's thoroughly mixed. Make a ball and flatten it into a pizza shape. Place it over the hole and feather the edges onto the pipe with some lacquer thinner. You've only have a small window of time to work with before it starts to set so be quick about it. Alternatively, check out this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rNepa6amuLiwe3U.html. In particular the repair plate, you could just use some plumbers putty and cover up the hole. They make them in 2", 3", and 4" diameters. Good Luck, Regards, Bob.

Hey Bob, my question is this: Coming from the second floor toilet above my toilet on the first floor is a large cast iron pipe where an adjoining pipe goes into the bottom one from the top one coming from the ceiling. It is only leaking where the two meet. There are no holes at all, just when the toilet is flushed upstairs, where that pipe goes into my pipe is leaking at the place where the one is inserted into the other. I have done this repair many times on my 90 year old 4 inch cast iron waste pipe. The difficult part is getting the pipe dry first. I don't let any waste water into the drains (dump it outside) until the pipe is dry. This time during the summer it took close to two weeks before I proceeded. Ideally if you'll be away for a period of time, then do the patch when you return before letting any water into the drain system. Hope this helps and all the best!

I know where the clog is so Im cutting just behind it and then need to clear, clean, and scour the pipe to then mate on ABS from everything back to the sink. So I’ll have about a 12” section remaining downwind that connects into where the toilet line is (which is working fine) but really want to line the inside of that 12” section with epoxy or a 1.5” pipe or both. Any recommendations are helpful. What I DO NOT want to do is deal with the actual joint where it connects to the toilet line.. just epoxy to its opening.

You can't just cut out a section and replace it using no-hub couplings? Have any pictures? Send them to : info@robertsessaplumbing.com. I never epoxied a pipe on the inside!

@@BobsPlumbingVideos I'm almost done. Over the last 10 days I cut a 2' x 2' hole in our bathroom slab, dug a 4ft hole and isolated the cast iron Y-joint into our main 3" waste line. I cut out the section in question (~32" worth of 3" cast iron with Y-joint in the middle that fed two bathroom sinks). I'd previously cut off the drain pipes about 3" above the slab when trying to snake them. Sure enough, the Y is so clogged I can't even stab a philips screw driver through it. Anyway, we just have to clean out the 3" pipe to where the toilets connect (about 24" downwind of the cut) and then re-pipe everything with ABS. I'm putting in new 2" pipes with cleanouts and adding a 1-1/2" vent line over one sink that only had an in-wall racetrack of ABS. This wasn't my first rodeo as I use to remodel kitchens, baths and basements but had never done slab cuts to replace cast iron before. What a job to dig all that out of a 2x2 hole though. We got it deep enough to sit in the hole, then kept filling 5 gallon buckets and handing them up to my wife. All the demo is done so its just re-pipe from here onward. My final question is should the new 2" ABS sit inside the 3" cast iron pipe by any length? I'll be using a 2 to 3" boot. I also need to find one with the stainless wrap.

The iron is paper thin, probably destroy it. Besides, this a temporary fix. I try to extend inevitable replacement.

Have you had any luck repairing a cast iron radiator on a hot water system?

I wouldn't use this method, not recommended for holding pressure.

Thanks, ever try brazing or muggy weld?, Was trying to remove a damaged section of the radiator, but not much luck with the connecting nipples, haven't got them to move yet.

Five minutes of content frustrated by and hidden within 20 minutes of hem-hawing and slow-mo pipe scanning. Hard to imagine this wasn't a deliberate attempt to get people frustrated.

Totally agree. This has to be the most frustrating, time wasting "how to" video I've ever come across. And when he actually starts talking about the epoxy, he decides to fucking whisper like he's talking to a sleeping baby and you can hardly hear a word he's mumbling.
