The Castle Ravenloft board game is the first entry into the Dungeons & Dragons Adventure System series of board games. In this video I review the board game from the both the perspective of a mini painter and a dungeon master looking to expand his miniature collection. This is not a review of the board game itself. This review focuses on the miniatures and their value to a DM or player of the D&D roleplaying game. The footage of the miniatures in this set were hand painted by me. Enjoy!

The D&D Adventure System of board games has been going on for over 10 years now. Each entry in the series contains unpainted versions of official Dungeons & Dragons miniatures. If you do not mind unpainted minis, then this series could be a great way to broaden your miniature collection. If you paint minis, then these board games make for a fun challenge.

When I was starting out as a DM, I bought all 4 of the board games that were out at the time. It did give me an instant 160+ minis to work with for around $100

Same, I was very impressed with the price point on Amazon. I also found salt marsh much later for slightly more...but it just didn't have enough miniatures to even register, :)

The zombies are a recasting of the Terror Wight from the early 2000s WotC miniature game

Very cool. Just as a side note about rhe blazing skeletons, green flames come from burning sulfur and/or arsenic which produces toxic smoke. Call it a little DM gift to start the new year

The Rogue can be straightened out (hot/ice water trick) to sort out her off balance pose. Looks a lot better :)

Hey, your brown shields could always pass for bronze ones. Drybrush with some greenish or blueish to add some patina as they belong to ancient warriors and you're set :) Great video, really like your work on this

Great job, I would recommend using ultra matt varnish especially on clothing to remove the ‘wet’ look or do it all over then use satin on flesh only. It can transform your miniatures.

The Castle Ravenloft Board Game includes unpainted versions of the minis shown in this video. It is certainly enough minis to get started if you plan on using minis.

Wrath of Ashardalon, The Legend of Drizzt, Temple of Elemental Evil, Tomb of Annihilation, and Waterdeep - Dungeon of the Mad Mage. There is also an expansion called Ghosts of Saltmarsh.

D&D minis always seem a bit ~off to me and the rules much more complex than makes it easy to get friends involved,, but you did a fantastic paint job and excellent presentation. Do you ever get in to customization of your minis? Id consider replacing the wings on at least one of the monsters. I'm also curious about your opinion on the relevance of kobolds and dragonborn. They seem so out of place for a sort of Gothic horror theme.

I rarely modify solid minis that require no assembly, but I have done a little kitbashing in the past with plastic model kits where the parts need to be glued together. I plan to do more of that in the future. As for the kobolds and dragonborn, they are a deviation from the overall theme. I can give the dragonborn a pass because it is one of the player characters, but the kobolds could have been swapped out for some other kind of minion like good old classic goblins.

@@dancoles2235 From what I know goblins are more of a fairy tale or high fantasy creature so they may not fit the gothic horror theme but, goblins are popular and this model selection has a trend of popular, highly recognizable monsters. In D&D goblins and kobolds are different things, but the way goblins are portrayed is very recognizable whereas kobolds are not in my experience. On a side note, if I were running a D&D game and had to fit goblins in among these other monsters I would have them be the scary people in the woods that serve the witch/hag or maybe they are a hired workforce for the vampire. Perhaps the Count needs intelligent, free-thinking, and importantly sunlight resistant workers but wants to maintain a little distance between himself and his prey.
