Always wondered what made one of my former cats Julia, who lived to the ripe old age of 21 years old, the matriarch of my cat ‘family’. She never fought with any of my other cats over the years, but she ruled the roost without doubt. I most appreciate that even though you have thousands of recorded hours showing people cat issues and human issues you still take the time to address the questions and concerns people have. You don't belittle them or call them out and encourage us to be kind and courteous as well. Gentle encouragement to do more research instead of saying negative things or making the person feel like an idiot is just a great lesson on being a kind person. I'm sure these questions can become irritating and tiring since I'm sure you get the same questions over and over again. But thank you for setting an example on treating people right. I needed that today!

So funny this video appeared today as last night I was looking this up! 😂 My boys Onyx and Zeus are brothers (same litter) approx 1 year, 4 months, last night they were zooming around the house, tumbling with each other, biting each others necks and meowing (Bombays so maybe more vocal perhaps?). I wondered if they were fighting as they were more rough than usual but nope! Their ears were pointed forwarded, no hissing at all, the claws were not out, the biting did not hurt. I observed them for a while take turns chasing each other, like a little game of cat tag lol this video just assured me they're both ok and get along just fine. I'm glad they have each other to play with, it's so cute. I love them so much 🥰 ❤️🐾

When he starts to get to rough I know to bring out the toys (or laser pointer if I'm lazy) now to figure out how to stop the morning quarrels (I think it's over the spot on the bed but they both at some point in the night do sleep comfortable together) hard to know what's going on at 5:30am. just to put in context they get along most time I think Dino just has a bit too much energy for Velvet.

I can attest to furniture turf wars being serious thing! I have two fur babies - a male and a female, litter mates, adopted. My boy Finn is very domineering and picks fights with his sister Shu all the time. They are both very large cats (I believe they’re half Maine Coon) but he’s significantly stronger than her so it gets nasty. They also play fight, groom each other and cuddle - it’s not all-out war all of the time - but it is a very serious problem that I’m trying to remedy. Thankfully, even before quarantine, I’m stay at home so I can dedicate a lot of time to them. This is how serious the situation is: Finn actually broke her hip when they were 18 months old when he jumped on her back in one of these episodes. Her leg is now free floating after surgery (not attached to the hip bone; she’s doing amazing though, doesn’t even have a limp and no signs of any pain or aggravation since recovery). I 💯 would’ve separated them after this incident if I felt it was a problem that had no solution no matter how bonded I am with them. I love Finn so much but I’d put Shu’s safety and protection over my heart if it ever came down to that. But there was so much love there too that I knew we could improve things and my vet agreed. Two small changes that have had big payoffs is doubling up on the same piece of cat furniture in the same areas and setting different schedules for cuddle time with me (Finn is a morning cuddler while Shu is still sleeping and Shu gets me all to herself at night once he goes to the basement to sleep - he doesn’t come up to my bed until the early morning hours). As Jackson said, I noticed a lot of their fights had a pattern - same area and time of day, when I was in the bathroom getting ready in the mornings and Shumai was laying down in her box just outside the bathroom door (it’s a plastic storage bin that she just claimed one day so I let her keep it). It finally occurred to me that Finn was jealous that she had a special place close to me at a time of day when they’re both vying for my attention. I removed that box, moved two of those corrugated cardboard loungers in its place - not too close together but both in view of me - and it’s really helped.

I was also hoping on some more general information between play and real fightas when I saw the title of this video. I have a cat that almost always take a position similar to Olivia (ears flat back, body low down to the grund with paws up and ready) however he does this when he is the instigator too. And he can be the instigator, take that kind of position and when the other cat leaves he will go right back and prod her! The next moment they are sleeping in the same bed. I don't know what to make of their interactions most of the time! :p

While we've been working really hard on helping the Tsarina find her mojo, and she's been walking much taller and more confidently lately (so proud of her), Guinness likes to chase her. I've thought for a while that he doesn't seem aggressive when he goes after her, but if she runs, he chases. She obviously hates it, hisses, ears back etc. He just seems to think it's play time. So glad I've seen this. I'm a first time cat owner and I jumped in at what I thought was the deep end by bringing home 2 kittens from a litter when originally I was only getting one. I have been terrified watching them play/fight but I had noticed that no matter how rough it gets the 'underdog' never runs away and when they do finally take a breather, she is always the one to start it up again so you have confirmed it seems like healthy play

The details about the ears and how she presses close to the floor are very good to know! My two boys play regularly and sometimes get a little rough, and it gets a bit difficult for me to tell when it's getting too far until there's screaming and yowling and hard biting. The younger one can dish the tackles, but is very sensitive when it comes to taking them. He's the definition of "scaredy-cat." I'll know what to watch for now in case they need broken up. :)

Brilliant words, so true. My 2 year old Sheba tries to use my 8 year old Billy as a squeaky toy at times. From trying to jump on him and one night she just wouldn't leave him alone constantly play attacking, then I brought out her favorite toy and all was well. 20 minutes of making her run around, interactive play time, peace restored! 😸😻😺

He's turning out to be the coolest little guy and your content is helping me learn so much. I'm trying to get his eating under control as when i found him he was skin and bones and i just fed him as much as he would eat bec he was so underweight you could see his ribs a bit. Fast forward 6 months he's getting a belly and a bit chubby and begs for food and i still fall into the trap of wanting to feed him when hes begging and crying for food because thats the foot him and i got off on. I know its on me to be a good kitty parent and not give in to him if its something unhealthy that lowers quality of life. My sister drops her yorkie mix, Love, off for a week or 2 at a time and my cat ~8 months, also Olivia, took some time to adjust but they rumble back and forth like nobody's business. Sometimes Olivia will hiss and claw swipe at Love but they back at it soon after. Haven't caught them cuddling yet, but with Love, it's just a matter of time.

And I was so worried when they started rough housing I was sure they were fighting and hurting one another but I see now they are playing and have become friends. It will take isis 13yr old female awhile before she is ready to curl up on the couch with Capone 13 wk old male. But she has adjusted well to her new playmate and it makes me so happy. My girl cat Broom Hilda is very feisty. She loves sneaking up on her brothers, smacking them in the face, etc. sometimes I worry that they’re fighting, but then I go to check and they’re just bouncing around playing. Jackson Galaxy videos like this have been a big help as I've taken in two wandering cats. The first, Ombre, was estimated to be 3 years old. He was severely starved and an old bite wound on his tail had led to a systemic infection that made every movement excruciating. The night I brought him in, I texted my son, and he brought supplies. Ombre jumped onto the new crate, before it was put together, and part of it came up and banged his chin. Poor Ombre froze and couldn't move for what seemed like an eternity. You know that's a cat in pain. Out in the neighborhood he couldn't get enough to eat before the other cats elbowed him away from the food. He couldn't fight for it. I took care of him until he was healthy, and he was comfortably owning everything in my home. It was a perfect set up. But then I had to trap a different street cat that was spraying into my windows and doors. That poor guy couldn't help it, he was a compulsive sprayer. I saw him spraying as he walked along the edges of this apartment complex. I had planned to release him after neutering, but the vet advised against it because he's FIV+. They don't want him in the situation of getting into fights with other street cats and spreading the virus. But what about Ombre??? I struggled with this. They had been companions in the community, and after Ombre came to live here, his old buddy hung out on the windowsill just sharing company. They got along pretty well, other than the old buddy spraying on Ombre if the window was open. It actually started when Ombre was neutered. That spray began to take over Ombre's territory, which is the main reason I wanted to get Ginger neutered. Ginger is estimated to be 2 years old, and he is assertive. He was always getting into fights in the neighborhood, battling for queens and usually coming out as the winner. He was a very proud tomcat, head and tail high no matter what the weather. Bringing him in where Ombre had finally gotten _his_ own territory was really sad. Ombre decided to try to chase him out. He went Napoleonic, and understandably so. After all, it was probably the first time in his life that he had his own space where everything was his or his and his human's. And then along comes a pushy encroacher taking over what used to be Ombre's spaces. Ombre insisted on leaving his own scent all over anything that was intended for Ginger. I even have two cat towers set up for them, but Ombre wants them both. The only thing left for me to do was to play with them to get their energy levels down. Usually they go at it at 1AM, even if I've played with them late at night before bed. But I dealt with it, adjusting my schedule to take a nap so I could be up with them at 1AM, at least until they would be comfortable knowing they each have territory. And it's paying off. It's hard work, but it pays off in the long run.

I have the exact same situation with my two cats and always suspected that it might be excess of energy since Celli (the aggressor) always starts fighting with (or hunting) Bachuta when I’ve ignored her demands for playtime. It gets tricky with the situation that when I play with Celli and Bachuta joins in that Celli stops playing. Also she doesn’t seem to be too interested anymore in any toy I present her (have two types of these “cat-fishing-rods” xD) I was thinking of starting to walk them on a leash but wouldn’t know how to start xO guess need to watch some more videos

Very interesting. I have two cats, that sometimes 'fight' and it seems pretty rough i.e. clumps of fur will be pulled out, but I think it's a dominance issue because it often starts with what I call 'handbagging' i.e. both cats upright, face to face, close proximity and tails lashing. Then the handbagging starts and it dissolved into a fight - but nothing like as savage as shown in the video. The two cats never sleep together or groom each other, but do follow each other about outside and have mad chases around the garden.

Im glad to see this. When I play with my cat and her ears go that low on her head I leave her be. But when I see her arch her back and her ears are curved back and her eyes are big, yup she wants to play.

My 1yo kitten(#2), I got when he was 6wks, has been attacking my other cat (#1) since he was about 6mths, both Male & both fixed. I feel it's no doubt a level 8 if not 9. He will walk by #1 & aggressively jump him just bc & when #1 starts squalling & takes off, #2 will then chase him all over the house doing whatever he needs to get at him. I always break them up & try to stop it immediately w/o putting myself in harm's way, but EVERY time no matter what, he comes at me with teeth & all 20 claws along with hissing & growling all bc I stopped him!! When he's like this he will viciously latch on to, attacking whatever I'm using (usually a pillow) as a shield. Even the look in his eyes is scary af. Everyone in my home is fearful of him bc of his sudden & fierce "mood swings".

My boys have been doing this more and more! My older, larger cat (Weasley) will corner the other cat (Nimbus)behind the toilet where they will hiss and growl. I've tried closing the door and they will just do it somewhere else. Weasley will chase Nimbus all over the house and it is nearly impossible to break it up. I have a 3 bedroom house and tons of cat toys/furniture. I have bought them another cat tree that should be here this week and hopefully that helps.

Cats used to fight all the time before I figured out to have two litter boxes in different spots and two water fountains in different spots. Sometimes they still go at it but I’m sure it’s more playful now.

Most cats have "the mad hour." My 2 have it around midnight. Luckily they are both young and full of energy together, with the full run of the flat and plenty of furniture to access. This really helps my girl get away from my boy when he's getting too frisky (both neutered, but he's still got that lil bit testosterone in him 🙄) and she needs to make a quick escape! JC has taught me a lot about why my cats do what they do ❤

So we just got a new kitten and they sometimes fight. The older one will back if the new one meows (cause it's in pain most likely) Their ears aren't flattened They do get in the belly up postion at times which I believe is not a submissive position But sometimes they also go all out and make noises that usually worry me. I guess they do that cause the younger one is much more chill than the older one and probably has less energy (it hasn't been living in the best conditions until recently). They are both male kittens so I guess their play fighting is rougher

I just got a new cat and have not let my two cats interact alone yet (it's been about three weeks). They appear to fight under the door that separates them, but there is no more hissing. However, one of my cats gets super anxious near the door and will redirect this to anyone who gets near (she is normally sweet but will hiss and bite you if you try to go through the door or move her). I'm hoping that over time she will relax and I can evertually introduce these cats!

I rescued a pair of bonded littermates and they always would play and play rough. Sometimes it would worry me and I was not sure if they were actually hurting each other. Then one of my girls had to stay at the vet overnight and when I brought her home her sister didn’t recognize her (I know now it was nonrecognition aggression), the fight was so scary I will never mistake play or fight again. I had to slowly reintroduce them like they were stranger cats meeting for the first time, and it took months for their relationship to get back to the point where they’ll sleep next to each other and groom each other again

We have a trouble area in our house as well! We plan to put up some cat shelves to give everyone in that area more space!

We have one little hissy monster who likes to cause friction. She’ll start by initiating what looks like a play fight (ears perked, rolling around, playfully swatting), but then she escalates it and starts whapping hard enough that fur flies... and hisses at any cat that whacks her back. We added more cat furniture and that did seem to help reduce the number of serious incidents. Now she’s more likely to get in one solid hit, hiss, and run away.

I have a very difficult situation. I have two cats, and they live in our large basement. Not allowed upstairs. I have a 6 year old female who’s very shy, quiet, sensitive and scared. I adopted a 10 month old male kitten who is fierce, energetic, aggressive, playful and literally wild. He was a stray, and goes crazy during playtime. There’s 2 main rooms in the basement, and I followed most of the steps of introducing them, but after 2 months they still don’t get along. My male kitten attacks the older girl all the time. Stepping on her, swatting her head, flipping her underneath of him. The girl will swat back and hiss, growl and flatten her ears. When it gets really bad I separate them, but my male claws at the door and meows nonstop. I can’t keep them separated. I have tons of hiding spots, boxes, perches and secure spaces, but my male often steals my girl’s sleeping spots or scares her out of them. They can’t play at the same time without fighting, and I don’t know how to help them get along. They chase each other and my male always is faster and has hurt my girl twice. I have two opposite cats and a small space..what do I do?

I just adopted two ginger kittens to go with my two older rescue cats. My rescues have the soft, fluffy beds, but prefer Amazon boxes lined with cardboard scratching boards. New kittens came and I made a newly lined box for them as well as new fluffy bed. They have yet to set foot in the fluffy bed, but the new, larger box bed was relegated to an older cat and his box raided and conquered by the new guys. The house is now littered with boxes. Large cat tree and Catio are in the works.

We brought a second cat into our family at the end of February - right before all of the Covid stuff kicked in! So now we're quarantined with both kitties. We're at the point where they are regularly playing and having dinner near each other for close to an hour with no issues, but we don't know how to safely start to extend that time! We can't keep them playing for 4-5 hours, so how do we get to that point? Also worried because normally both of us work during the day so our new kitty is settling into this routine of having us home all day that isn't real!

I had 3 cats, each of them about a year or two apart. All boys. The middle one had a disability from being hit by a car before he ran away (to live with me). They all played kung fu, but not nasty, and they were always mindful not to be too rough with Meepie (the middle cat). They got along like brothers. It was the best time.

This seemed clearly a fight over "resources". Who has the higher position in the room? There was only one cube to perch upon. There needs to be another. I have 2 cats, Ginger and Cupid. The younger, Ginger, newer female has taken the highest spot, so I got 2. She took them both. I added a little box for the older, passive male. He loved it, till she came around and fought him out of it. Now he won't go in it. :( Things are gonna change. Just need to figure out how, besides removing Ginger.

New cat is always submissive but not fearful even when attacked will just get up and go off. Old cat is the aggressor. Love to see what signs that are positive look like as we are clueless.What we are seeing is not classic like this. Hey Jackson! I have a probably old questions but here ya go- Are male cats really more affectionate than female cats or does it vary from cat to cat as individuals?

So my two adult cats get along really well most of the time. I have one tree dweller and one bush dweller. The only place they fight is on top of me on the bed. If my tree dwelling female comes to cuddle with me, my male bush dweller always attacks (her ears go down, tail flick, and growling) any recommendations on reducing this. To note, I also have a kitten that I’m working on integrating which has upset my female so she’s extra temperamental

My take would be primarily a fight over resources, so more catification, all over, different areas, different heights. Secondarily it may be that Pudim may need more play to get it out of his system. It would be interesting to know if they were gotten together, or if Olivia was first (or older). I say that, because Olivia seems to have the 'top spot' on the box, and Pudim wants it. Going crazy with the catification would eliminate most of it.

My 2 cats used to be very close. They'd groom each other, sleep on top of one another etc. But now they're all the time fighting. There is no one antagonist but it usually happens when the protagonist is above the other. Both cats are littermates so I didn't expect them to be so aggressive towards each other. I'm also getting a bit fed up of the tufts of fur everywhere! 😤

When my significant other tried to get a second cat for the first time, it did not go well at all. The "resident cat" was about 8 or 9 years old at the time, the new one was maybe 2 years old. The other cat seemed pretty sweet and cuddly and overall gave the impression that butter wouldnt melt. As soon as our backs were turned, however....that new cat transformed into an absolute top of the line a-hole. She commandeered and dominated everything that the resident cat had previously - toys, beds, litter boxes, any food sources etc. (multiple scratching posts, food and water bowls, cat beds and litter boxes were available on separate floors!). It got so bad that she would not even let the resident cat use any of the litter boxes, resulting in her peeing and pooping everywhere. As soon as the resident cat moved anywhere near any of the litter boxes or food bowls, there would be hissing, growling, pouncing and scratching, claws out and all. In hindsight, it was a miracle the resident was not injured. We thought at first that this would settle, but this is not what happened. After a few days we decided that enough is enough, further alarmed by the fact that the resident was starting to lose weight - turned out the new cat would not even let the resident one eat or drink anything and randomly attacked her, even when the resident was sleeping. There was no way of discouraging her from doing that, and there are about 40 years of experience with cats between us. The new cat absolutely had to go *right now* - luckily, my cousin was looking to get a new cat at the time (his had passed away a year prior) and the matter was settled in less than 48 hours. The resident cat was pretty shaken up and extremely timid for weeks after that, still peeing on the bed occasionally and always walking around the place very cautiously, ears folded back and with her belly almost touching the ground. Pretty heartbreaking to watch. Flash forward: there is now a three month old kitten living in the house and overall they get along just fine. Kittens being kittens though, the older cat occasionally needs to tell the kitten to knock it off when she is chasing and pouncing on her tail etc.

If you have to ask it’s probably play. Some cats like to play rougher than others as well. The last one we rescued would look like a bully to someone that didn’t know her, but she really just likes to play rough. Giving and receiving. She will instigate chase with our dog all the time just be chased. Teases the dog like crazy. She was born outside to a stray and eventually had her own litter in the wild and she’s just not afraid of anything. 7 pound cat that’s very confident and intimidating.
