Caterpillar winch rebuild process for model CAT 58 on D8H, D8K, 583H, or 583K. This CAT winch rebuild is similar to the other CAT winch models like the CAT 55, CAT 56, and CAT 57 for other CAT crawlers.

Very interesting thanks Dan. My uncle had a very decent winch on his turbo D8 in New Zealand back in the seventies. Aside from road making there he pulled out very big very old trees (?~1.5 - 2m through) in a dense subtropical rain forest with old wet soft soil. He was often tracks deep in it. It thrilled and amazed me to be on the bullie inside that massive protective cage when I was there in the school holidays. Unfortunately the reality and significance of losing that type of environment eventually struck me in my early teens. There were also protests at about the same time and logging of these massive ancient trees stopped. Many people lost jobs and were understandably bitter. I have spoken to the odd old-timer about this over the years with most now understanding stopping was the right thing to do. It was pre-OH&S days here so most of what went on then probably would not be allowed now. I still have very fond memories of the excitement and possible danger of being there. Even now I wonder about the specifications of his bulldozer. Was the 58 the largest of the CAT PTO winches? Cheers

The CAt 58 and 59 were the largest winches CAT made back then, but now there are larger ones made by other manufactures available for the modern D8-D10/11 class machines.

Just have that seal surface turned down and have it industrial chromed, surface will outlast the winch.

Hey guys love the vid! Just remember experienced manual machinists could manufacture allot of the hard parts you mention. Often they can make stuff cheaper than what Cat would want anyway.

Yes, but really good manual machinists are not easy to find in many areas. A worn seal surface isn’t to hard to fix, but spline shafts and gears with heat treatments are usually very costly to get 1 unit made by a custom machinist. Sometimes that’s the best/only option, but Allied and Carco are still making most of these winches unlike CAT. Parts are more readily available from Allied and Carco which is usually a better option than CAT or custom fab. This is one of the reasons CAT winches will eventually be obsolete. A good machinist can make anything work and CAT winches will still be in service for a while.

I had a Cat 54 winch on my D5H TSK. The 54 is a strong, nice to use winch - when it’s going. The filter, which sits inside the r/h side exploded and put tiny bits of sawdust and stuff through the valve body that controls the winch. It is full of tiny passages and orifices, so the rubbish stopped the winch working. I took the winch on and off about ten times, which is super heavy and difficult, trying to get it working again, but I never did get it to work. I had to give up and put an Allied winch on instead.

Sounds like you had good success! Cat winches are great when they work, but we have changed serval cat 54’s that weren’t cost effective to repair to an allied w5c. The downside of older cat winches seems to increase each year. Hope you have good success with your allied winch

Own a D 7 g with a cat winch very informative thanks, question the big hydraulic hose going into the valve were does it gets its flow of oil from Trans or hydraulic pump

Oil for winch pressure comes from a dedicated winch pump mounted near transmission.

D7G would have the pump driven off the accessory drive on the engine, oil is suctioned up from oil in bottom of winch case.

Good way to get that gear with the ridge repaired would be to have a machinist spray weld and machine it.

Yes, that's part of what the video is trying to show. We wanted to show how a winch that stopped production around 40 years ago works since it's different than the competitors. Also issuing a caution that any hard part failures will probably result in significant downtime and cost as you'll likely be making parts or scrapping it as only a few of these models are not worth anything these days. We recently got a call from someone who put 15k into a cat winch only to find out the specialty pump required for install was no longer available. He had to either walk away or find a way to jerry-rig a pump from a belt drive to try and run the winch. For most of these models, it's unwise to spend anywhere close to 15k as you should have jumped ship way before 15k and changed over to a modern winch with an internal pump etc. PS - We prefer chrome/grind for light seal grooves. Huge headache
