This is a very basic rough list of the order of operations from the video I made to glance at real quick if you forget a step or stuck. Ps. Thank you so much. This was the most comprehensive video for complete starters I have found. Evac Start: -Tear down Curtains -Smash lockers for 2 pipes (deconstruct after you gain the ability to) -make a crowbar -bash down door to upstairs -break solar panels -smash benches for planks -make hammer -make screwdriver -disassemble lockers -Make a brazier (use construction tab to place firewood marker next to brazier) -deconstruct tank on roof (use 40L barrels for water) -make pot -Turn on auto forage and forage to lvl 1 survival #TIP use p: and type in trait to see what the traits will unlock EXAMPLE p:survival -make two digging sticks to get survival lvl 2 -make fire starter -break toilets for wax to make candles -make cudgel or wooden spear -butcher sheets for rags butcher string for thread -build table -build bed (and sheet for warmth)

1) Tear down curtains, get branch for bashing, butcher long string. 2) Smash lockers until you get a pipe. Optimally two pipes, and later 2 full sheets of metal. 3) Get rock for hammering. - Get pipe > make crowbar. 4) Smash solar panel. Get steel / scrap. Smash gutter for more scrap. 5) Craft spike > makeshift knife. 6) With planks, steel, strings > make hammer 7) Scrap > Make screwdriver. 8) Disassemble locker for sheet metal. 9) Make brazier. (Safe way to contain fire). 10) On roof, disassemble standing tank, haul items down stairs. 11) Collect water. 12) Sheet metal > Make pot. 13) Level up survival until survival 2. "P:Surv" to find recipes. 14) Make fire rill. Move firewood next to brazier. 15) Arrange tank close by for clean water 16) Go to basement: Smash toilet for beeswax(??). 17) Batch craft > 4 candles (Early game light source). 18) Craft cudgel(close range) or wooden spear(reach attack to hit 2 spaces away). - Young trees give stout branches. 19) Planks > Makeshift Bed - Use sewing tool and rags > blanket. 20) Optional: Table (Good for crafting). - Wood panel from evac shelter door. 21) Optional: stone adze(wood sawing).

The toilet wax was added to the experimental branch 10 days ago. You would really only know about it by watching pull requests.

Very nice and helpful video, wish i seen it back when i helplessly tried to achieve anything by playing SWATs characters that have skills thrown all over the place. By the way, it would be cool if you explained how you use that exploit with throwing barrel full of water around.

Pretty good. Of course for a game with so many keyboard commands it would have been helpfull to quickly mention the respective shortcut you hit when doing things like hauling, crafting etc.

Not the intent of this video. It's not a 'Babys first steps in the Cataclysm' video. I have scores of other videos going into exhaustive detail about the complex interface and how to control/play CDDA. This one is more of a 'Ok, you've fiddled with the game a bit and have the basic controls down, now here are some things that are possible with an evac shelter start to help you survive longer'. It's just a demonstration showing the many opportunities the Evac Shelter start gives for securing survival. The intent is more to teach newer players what kinds of things are possible with that scenario and the range of materials available and less 'Welcome to CDDA, first press @ to open your player information screen'.

Bro this guy with the cowboy hat and assault rifle is just sitting there in shock watching this utterly unremarkable bald guy barge into the shelter and start ripping shit apart to make tools and a firepit without a single word. Like damn, most people would be in shock for at least five minutes about the apocalypse before they start ripping down curtains.

no more toilet-wax :( not in the most recent stable, anyway. no wooden spear either. a 'spike on a stick' is a pretty good alternative for a reach weapon in the beginning.

I believe i have two...maybe three...deaths recorded on camera of me accidentally setting fire to my item stockpile and blowing myself up when the ammo/grenades went boom.

quik question: At 6:35 how did you haul those items? When I go to the keybindings list I only see the "haul items along the ground" but that brings up a new interface. It looks like you just pressed a key and dragged the items to whatever space you walked to - which would be a huge time saver instead of using that hauling interface!

Umm...unless something has changed since Friday the hauling action/hotkey does does exactly what i show in the video. There has never been an interface/menu for it. you stand on a space with item(s), press the hotkey, then walk and the items (plus anything else you step on) drag along the ground with you. I have the hotkey "Haul items along the ground" set to my \ key and just toggle it on/off as needed.

Hey man, had the same thing. then I found out that it was the wrong slash, I was pressing "/" not "\". the button you need the press is above the enter key.

Methinks, the makeshift crowbar is more useful tool at start. I prefer it instead of the cudgel, esp if you start in a Lab (or is you see the crates -- milk farm, random ones in fields, fuel station, and etc.) You can use it every time you hand it, with cudgel you lose this ability. So the crowbar is the most 1st weapon at start.

Eh, as with most things in CDDA.....it depends on circumstances/location/knowledge. the cudgel is better in combat but the crowbar also provides prying utility (which was a much stronger benefit back when it could pry doors/windows, but less so now). new players are going to be needing the combat advantage much more than the prying one (especially until they learn to avoid fights as much as possible in the beginning). the incidence of crates is also relatively small outside of a lab and nearly every other house kitchen has a Hammer (negating the Prying 1 advantage of the make-shift crowbar) which they are likely to obtain long before they run into many crates. TLDR: either choice is good and won't really matter for very long.

I think you need scissors now for the short strings. At least those first aid kit boxes where those can be found are common in the evac shelters. Also, since the screwdriver also now needs chunks of steel, the 3 aren't enough.

Nothing has changed. Scissors are not specifically required. Any tool with 'cutting 1' quality will work (as indicated on the disassemble items screen ). I just updated to todays experimental build to verify/confirm.

@@Vormithrax Ehh, you're probably right and I must have made some mistake somewhere to think that, plus the wiki had this on the long string page: "A long piece of cotton string. Use scissors on it to cut it into smaller pieces". I did edit the comment to also talk about 3 chunks of steel not being enough these days. Did you check that, too? It looks like the screwdriver requires two.

It was a bug in the fire's code the caused it to go out almost immediately no matter what fuel. Although it's been 5 months so you probably already know that

I don't think the makeshift knife is still a thing but guess the stone knife will make due so it is still a thing i just did not have the skill level just figured it out with the brazier *lol ouky he also said so when making the brazier

Update your experimental build. For about 2 weeks there was a bug preventing fires from staying lit.

I miss playing on pc so much, it takes a blink to do evrything.I can only play on android for reason and it's torture, the most basic actions takes several minutes and even the movent is slugish v.v

The walking is a snails pace, the sleeping actually feels like your character is sleeping, on certain phones some tilesets don't work. I love the game but boy is it rough on android.

Completely outdated now rain gutters don't give scrap metal anymore you need to craft a notched plank in order to start fires with the fire bow and you can't craft a spear without fabrication level 2 and survival 1 and there's a ton of other changes too so have fun looking for a new tutorial to properly teach you how to do things until they inevitably change it again :)

So how is the Nest clusterf*ck? Still the same pile of sh!t it was back in august? I ask because Korg didn't want to change it, even though a lot of people were saying it was ruining the game. The suggested Tree style seemed a good idea.

Within the first 5 minutes of the tutorial, you do several things without telling the viewer *how* to do those things. Example: "We're going to tear down the curtains, and I'm just gonna make a pile of items here . . . I'm gonna go ahead and pick up a stout branch and wield it." You didn't tell us HOW to tear down the curtains. You didn't tell us HOW to haul items on the floor. You didn't tell us HOW to pick up a stout branch and then wield it. I'm a new player and don't know any commands, and having to look up how to do certain things in YOUR tutorial is very off putting.

Feel free to read the title of this video again...then listen to the first 60 seconds of the video again. It's not called a Tutorial in the title, I did not make this a tutorial, it does not contain information in a format like a how-to-control-the-game tutorial. This isn't intended to be a step-by-step microscopic level introduction of every key-press that you have to perform in the game in order to learn the basic controls. Feel free to go watch my actual Tutorial Series for that kind of detail, or my Cataclysm University series, or my Quick Tip series, or just jump into a game and spend time experimenting/practicing the controls. this particular video is a macro-level demonstration of the early days of the game in the Evac Shelter and shows the various items that can be made in that environment to help survive as well as general strategy advice. It's a TIPS video that presumes you have already played a bit and understand the most basic controls. It's an incredibly big and complicated game. It has an incredibly big and complicated control scheme. There is no simple way to shortcut that learning process. You will constantly be checking the hotkey bindings and fumbling through the scores of commands at first. Everyone has to go through that learning process. It's tough/discouraging at first but it's very much worth the effort as it gives access to a (completely free) game that can provide a thousand hours of gameplay and you still won't have seen/done everything.

For the tearing down of the curtains, press 'e' to examine, select the direction of the window, and then the menu titled "Do what with the curtains?" appears.
