When you order any of the basic upgrade packages on the Lagoon you double the fuel and water tank sizes, so you end up with 160 gallons of fuel and water. Also, if you buy the gen set option, you lose the extra water tank, but you’d add a watermaker so fresh water wouldn’t be much of an issue.

I'm a catamaran fan and have intensively researched Lagoon & Leopard. Additional info, the Lagoon 450 bulkhead issue has been reported by over SIXTY owners now, so not caused by over-tightening rigs. Multiple pictures of these peoples bulkheads have shown poor design/use of plywood and large holes drilled in said bulkheads to run hoses/wires that may have contributed to some of the deformation. There have also been reports of other Lagoon models having issues as well (albeit not as many as the 450). The Leopards, unlike the Lagoons have been using a steel beam, instead of wood for the bulkhead for many years. Lastly, the Leopard 42 is the first Leopard to now use all foam/fiberglassed bulkheads (no plywood). I'm assuming these two things add to the cost over the Lagoon as well....quality :). I think you should of added sail area to your comparison to talk about likely hood of SOG vs AWS...aka how well will they sail in light winds (with standard sails of course). Thanks for your videos.

I really hate that upper deck lounging area. All it does is raise the boom, taking away sail area and make it hobby horse more. Still I kind of prefer the Leopard. The design seems even more modern than 5 year development time difference. Plus, the "bulkhead issues" aside, the videos I have seen comparing construction quality decidedly favors the Leopard. All moot points, however since I can't afford more than 1/10th of the asking prices (not to mention the 100s of thousands more to make them sail-able) 😅

I really don't think the upper or front lounge areas are worthwhile for me. The boat already has plenty of area to lounge. They could have made the saloon a little bigger and created more storage instead of the front lounge. And the upper lounge just eats into the coach roof area where you could have had some solar panels. I mean these aren't deal breakers, I just don't see using them at all. The front door is nice if you have to go forward doing bumpy weather. But I know some people have expressed concern with the front door leaking if water is coming over the bow in heavy seas.

I am a older leopard 40 owner. (The Melvin Mareli designed boats) this 40 and the 46 I still believe were the best sailing Leopards built. Sadly you did not talk weight of these 42 ft boats. My boat is 7,6 tons empty and 10 tons full. The new Leopard 42 is 12 tons empty. This is a massive amount of weight added and even the older 46 comes in at 10 tons empty. So you have a smaller boat weighing 2 tons more ? Really someone has lost the plot at the factory from a sailing perspective these are dogs to sail. The raised boom is another bad move adding to worse sailing ability. Sadly the Leopards were always seen as better sailing boats than the lagoons but I think one can clearly see they are following in their footsteps making heavy, poor sailing vessels. No wonder seawind , outremer are seeing such grow, as people that would like to sail not float around would rather buy these boats.

Mike, I respectfully disagree on the performance, but agree on the high boom, I am a Leopard delivery skipper and have sailed every model made for the last 15 years across oceans. The 42 sails surprisingly well, it has very good load carrying ability and its high bridge deck clearance is chalk and cheese compared to Morelli 40, A fair comparison to the 46 would be the current 45, the 45 will smoke the 46 on every point of sail, the new 50 is an absolute gem, its the best Leopard yet, seaworthy, comfortable and pretty quick.

I literally just spent a week sailing a lagoon 42 in Greece, two weeks ago. I am / was a lot like most of you. Really interested in a big production boat as they are cheaper, bigger, fancy this and that. Oh you will spend most of your time on the hook blah blah blah. The lagoon sailed so poorly. The self tacking jib is to narrow and you loose a massive amount of sail area , out boat the main sail kept binding up so we would have to go stand on your tippy toes in 5ft waves on the coach roof and manually pull it all the down. We had 35knt wind on perfect beam reach and could only get 7-8knts of speed. It sailed awful. Very nice inside, very comfortable. But i have now shifted my ideas of what i want in my boat. Im now thinking about a Nautitech open 40. The boom is shin high, it can sail in light winds, and up to 12-14 knts You still have big beds and comfortable living space. But can still sail in comfort in bad conditions I have been put off of the lagoon

Oh dear Brandon !! I'm sorry to tell you that the 42 is fast when you know how to sail it. We have done 10,000 miles in ours including the Atlantic and we are very rarely passed by any other sailboat. It takes time to learn how to get the best out of her but she will easily do 8 knots in 16 true with the standard sails. Add a code 55 and she does another 2 knots on a beam reach.

We had a similarly experience. We just crossed the entire Gulf of mexico on a Lagoon, and it sailed very poorly compared to our monohull. In my opinion, lagoons and maybe other cats are unsafe for offshore. These boats are way too easy to go overboard. Standing on the coach roof to untangle reefing lines and pulling down sails is dangerous as well. And don't get me started on airflow. These boats in hot climates are not good. There is zero airflow in the back area when at anchor. It's hot as hell back there....even with those 2 tiny windows opened in the front and the big sliding doors opened. These are beautiful boats for a marina or at anchor (if you can run the generator and AC), but I will just stick to my monohull and save the half million dollars.

There are a bunch of Lagoon 42s with bulkhead issues popping up. So, don't lie to people. Lagoons bulkheads are small weak and poorly built. When you walk around lagoons, all the floors creak. In my book, a creaky boat that creaks while sailing is a sign of poor construction.

Leopards as just as badly built as Lagoons. The sad reality of all low end production boats is that they are built by factory workers, not boatbuilders, who are managed by people who are under immense pressure to save money every day. The end result is boats that are fine-ish in sheltered waters for short trips, but not fit for purpose for any real voyaging. To be clear this applies to all production boats, mono and multi.

Both of these boats are realistically motor sailors at best. They sail like bricks. Its not hard to understand: fat hulls, heavy displacement, low sail area in an inefficient sailplan. Boats like these will always be worse at sailing than boats that put more priority on these factors.
