If there's one thing we've learned over the past few years of sailing around the world: There's no perfect sailboat! The catamaran vs monohull debate is mostly hype and we've done our best to stay away from adding to the noise.
When we heard our friends from Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose are thinking of selling their monohull to purchase a catamaran, we invited them to come crew with us...and that led to talks of cruising life in a mono vs a cat.
We were talking about it anyway so why not film and share? In this video we're discussing price and performance.
We hope you find this conversation based on our collective experiences helpful. If you're in the market to purchase a sailboat remember the Mantra: Spend Smart and Stress Less. Monohull or multihull...in the end the best boat is the one you can afford to purchase now.
⭐ After you hit that play button we'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below: What's you're preferred style of sailboat? Are you in the Monohull or Catamaran camp...or maybe you'd prefer to sail a mono but cruise in a cat? What's your favorite brand? It's always fascinating to read what draws each person to one type/brand/style of sailboat.

When I used to ride motorcycles often I was asked what is my favourite bike. My answer was always the same; the one I am riding now. My sense is it would be the same regarding sailboats. I own a monohull, a big fat bottomed girl, cutter rigged Bayfield 32 and for me, right now, everything considered, I love it. Either the boat suits my sailing habits, or my sailing habits suit the boat, but it works. I’m sure if I owned a cat I’d feel exactly he same. That said If I’m shopping for my next boat, price is a defining factor and would probably take the cat out of the equation, but if the boat has sails and Mother Nature is giving me some wind, I’ll still be thrilled.

after watching few of these mono vs cat, i feel most start off with mono then upgrade to cat later when they want comfort to live aboard and have enough money saved to upgrade. either way you have the same experience when visiting islands and same experience sailing in storms.

A discussion that never gets old! We bought our monohull (Catalina 42) instead of a catamaran, simply due to price. We just couldn’t afford to even consider a catamaran. But, all things being equal, we would have gone for a cat. Just for the room. Offshore, I’d rather be in a mono hull, but we just don’t spend much time offshore. Enjoyed your video!

The way I evaluate the relative values in comparing mono-hulls v. catamarans must include price per square foot and/or price per cubic foot. When you do that the catamarans often work out to cost less and are a better value. Also, I believe that all categories are not equal; and therefore, a weighted average to account for which factors are more important than others must be used. This weighted average is highly personal but look to what you do most often and what categories contribute to increasing your confidence in sailing or enjoyment at both anchor or sailing. Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose has videos which use five categories: safety & design, build quality, interior design, performance, and value for money. Their videos offer lots of valuable information. My issue is whether each category is of equal weight. Thanks for sharing.

My husband and I had this discussion for years. He was a 4th generation boat builder. Our first boat together was a small racing catamaran. The question of speed always made us lean towards the catamaran as our choice to circumnavigate the world. My best friend (husband) went to work one day & at the age of 50 died of a heart attack. My point is: do your homework... but, just go for it! These folks did and I loved their collaboration. ~ Love from a fellow Texas sailor💙

That wonderful keel on Ruby Rose makes her a my favorite monohull. I like heavy displacement mono and cat sailboats for their comfort in rough seas and their load carrying capacity, compared to low displacement ones. Speed is nice but it rates below a high displacement boat for cruising. If my choice was between a Southerly or a Lagoon of the same length, I would chose the Lagoon. This was an excellent discussion and I cannot wait for Part 2.....thank you, both couples!!!!

Having sailed a 36' McGregor cat in the Marshall islands, three things: 1. No bruise sailing. Boat doesn't heel over anywhere like a mono hull. 2. Most stable position of heavy keeled monohull is on the bottom. Most stable position for most cats is just upside down. We could fill our cat with water and sail away. 3. Speed 4. Watched a long term cruising family jump over the side and swim to shore at an anchorage during a typhoon. Their boat was pitching an rolling too much to allow sleep. (Of course being on the shore watching their boat didn't make sleeping very easy either). Our Cat was just going thru some more gentle pitching motion. No roll. TWO HULLS TO CLEAN. While we had seen 22kts under sail, the normal cruise speed was more like 9kts and even then on some seas you had to watch jumping off the back of a wave into the face of another, risking pitchpoleing. Didn't enjoy passages as they, even with the numerous squalls, were boring. We didn't have an autopilot though so constant hand steering was required.

Not something I'm terribly interested in, mainly because I couldn't drag my wife on to a sailboat with a brace of Clydesdales, but informative nonetheless. Personally I think it's basically the Ford/Chevy debate. Everyone on each side thinks they have the better craft but you all did a really good job showing that the debate is really all about 10% and the other 90% is about equal. Good job you two, and keep the videos coming.

It seems the comparison is always being made with both types being similarly sized....not fair. Of course a 43 Cat is superior to a 40 Mono except in deep water gale conditions. The comparison I would make is between a 40- 45 Cat and a 55-65 Mono. I think the " at anchor" space and comfort is similar in that context. As far as at sail? It depends on the type of motion you prefer. Regardless..nice video as usual by both couples and a interesting subject.

So glad you posted this. As previously commented, I was in the market for a 30-35' cat. Every marina that I want to be in can't accommodate the beam unless I take a 50' slip. So, now I'm looking for a 40-50' mono, full length shallow keel, sloop rigged center cockpit. The one thing it must have is a separate shower stall. Everything else can be dealt with or changed.

One thing that SV Delos found with their series on Cat vs Mono was the Cat sailors say you have to de-tune the sails a bit to keep the stresses down on a cat. With a mono it automatically spills wind by healing. The cat won't do that so the shrouds take on a lot more stress. This sounds like a wise discovery and ultimately it means the potential speed gap between a cat and a mono is less.

A conversation on which sailboat is best , Catamaran or Monohull , for that long and not turning into at least one call for a " Man overboard " is simply amazing ! Shows Sailors do have more fun ! I think for the question for survival is that a mono in a really bad storm , can flip all the way around and up again , were as a cat flips , and it is just holding on praying for help to arrive . Although very rare , thank God ! There was a movie about this in 2015 called "Abandoned " which took place near New Zealand . Your video was Great on a never ending subject !

so buy a Monohull if you want to sail and be safe(r) in rough weather, big waves and strong winds and buy a Catamaran when you are more planning of living in a huge area in the tropics and pray there is no hurricane? Cats have for sure more space but no, i just dont trust them on long hauls enough... thing is I actually never see a cat in the the North Sea or the Baltic sea but a lot here in Asia. Stay safe

Great comparison, looking forward to part 2. I noted your conversation on Antifouling and from experience we had a 51 monohull with a 7 foot draft and now a 48 foot Catamaran with 4 ft draft. We use less antifouling on the catamaran as there is so much less surface area below the waterline, even though we have 2 hulls. Keep up the great work guys and thanks.

I am not sure about how delayed are your episodes are but the Zatara (Sailing Zatara) is in Tahiti this week and they did make that change from a monohull to a Cat and Keith has sworn that he would never go back. This is the second time they’re in Tahiti and they started with the same experience as the two of you at around the same time. Nice to see you 4 crazy kids together. Good personalities on one boat. When I took ASA 106 one of the guys in my class said "there are plenty of boats to dream about but choosing one will get you out there before dreaming about the perfect boat, there are plenty of hunters all over the world, what does that tell you"... this was after a conversation about how hunters are pretty but we all feel like we wouldn't go off shore in one. We were on an Island Packet 40... that think was like driving an Abrams and we were in a gail for 3 days... It was crazy! But that was pretty good advice I think. As for the storm... It was Wild and I was lucky to be part of the group. The school said they felt like we were about the best students they have so they didn't ground us. We set sail and all hell broke loose as we sailed out of the Chesapeake.

Cool conversation. Couple of notes I’d add. When I compare the two, for space and price its a 40 foot cat vs a 46 foot mono to get comparable value. So, bottom paint, two skinny hulls vs one fat hull the difference isn’t double. Engine maintenance? The quantity of oil is negligible. The real factor is doing the job twice. When it’s a repeatable task the time drops with proficiency which you have more of plus the recent with doing it twice. Plus, with two people, do it simultaneously and you have the benefit of a race or methodology or whatever. Slower if you only have one drain pan. Speed. Compare the happy medium that you actually operate in. Max vs max isn’t usually that realistic in cruisers. What about sailing around weather or a squall? The wind is usually within the sweet spot for either style so better speed with the cat gives you more options and therefore safety. That’s enough iPad typing for now. Thanks for the content and conversation.

I'll throw in my two cents having spent time on both. If you plan on living on it with more than two people Catamaran is hands down the best option. More stable, faster cruise on sail and it's basically a floating condo, can't beat it, no monohull can compete. If you're going bigger than 55ft you can probably get away with either
@geraldthomas9253

The one thing I've heard repeatedly regarding the cat vs mono argument is the point of sail. The reason that mono-hulls can sail tighter is because their keel is larger. If you increase the keel on the cat it'll make that same angle, as shown by cats using dagger boards.

Another aspect of the debate that seldom gets addressed is the issue of beaching. Very, very few cats seem to be built with beaching in mind, but a number of the shallow-/swing keel monos come equipped with twin rudders so the boat can be beached and dried out. Their Southerly is one such boat. On the cat side, boats such as the Maverick and Antares are both explicitly designed to enable beaching. I suspect your Leopard, with its skegged rudders and shaft drives, would beach just fine, even if it isn't expressly encouraged.

In a nut shell, cats sail ON the water, mono’s sail IN the water. Cats are faster, more spacious, better to entertain on. Monos are cheaper to own, safer in heavy weather, and Point marginally higher. They also cost less. After a Cyclone/Hurricane, you may see monos washed up on beaches, but you don’t see them flipped upside down like a turtle on their back. Cats are faster, much more spacious and deep down, I think 98% of us mono owners have a deep secret fantasy of owning a nice cat one day...

Pretty much it. But when I get my nice cat, it will be when my heavy weather sailing is over. Also Cats have shallower drafts. Also I've heard that Cats are not good upwind - and the difference is more than marginal - but I don't have my own experience on Cats.

I’m a fan of both your channels, and have really enjoyed this whole cat vs mono storyline. Re. The comment about ‘how much boat the engine is pushing through the water.’ Remember, cats tend to ride on top of the water, and monos go through the water. So even though you’re pushing 2 hulls instead of one, overall, I would imagine there is less surface area ‘in the water’, especially if you take into account the heavy keel. Also, regarding hauling a cat out for emergency repairs, if you get the right cat (daggerboards, etc) you can beach it. Lastly, I always feel like sailing in a mono is like 5 people living in a pup-tent on a hill. Whereas, a catamaran is more like a London apartment (flat). Obviously this is subjective, and not all monos are that small and claustrophobic, but you get the idea. Looking forward to part 2.

This may come up in the comfort discussion, but here is my take. I'm looking to buy a boat to cruise with when I retire in 1706 days. I'm looking specifically at mono halls. My plan is to single hand or sail with 1 additional crew. My issue with the catamaran is that there is too much room. My friends will want to come and stay, and stay, and stay..... You get the idea. I'm going to cruise to get away from everybody! As always, a great video! I really enjoy watching you two. I only started watching you when Nick and Terysa were posting their videos from being on board for a week. I've been following Yacht Ruby Rose for awhile now. Sail on, Rick

I’m an armchair KZfaq sailor. For some reason I luv watching sailing channels and dreaming of living the life that you guys are living. For me I don’t think I could deal with being healed over all the time when on a lengthy passage. For that reason I would have to go with a catamaran and also having so much additional space. Damn I wish I hadn’t pissed so much money away in my younger years and saved more so I could afford to buy a cat and see the world. Maybe in my next life. 😢

Nice seeing the four of you together again. Two great couples. It seems your having N&T crew on your boat has converted Nick to a catamaran as they are currently shopping for one. One misconception I would like to add to the debate about "extra costs for 2 engines on a cat". Let's say you change oil on an engine every 100 hours, for example. If you alternate the running your Cat engines, port side for 100 and starboard for the next 100, you are changing oil the exact same amount as on a monohull! You are just getting HALF the wear and tear. By the time you have to replace both engines, a monohull, under the same sailing conditions with a similar engine size, will have needed to replace their's twice.

One thing I didn’t hear discussed was sailing pleasure, the thrill of 20 degrees of lean hard into the wind does it for me, I’m a biker, maybe cats for cagers , ( drivers ) and mono’s for those that feel alive.

I guess the living at an angle conversation will be in the comfort video. Although I like the look of a monohull, the 2 engines and flat sailing surface (okay, semi flat sailing surface) would sell me on the cat. 🐈 And the trampoline. Because it is a great place to sit.

For me, the only reason why l would never go to a catamaran is that Monohull has a keel and even if it's flipped over monohull will return back in a normal position where Catamaran will never do that.

Catamaran's have a lot of practical benefits. I can't help but think that you get less bang for your buck with them though in terms of quality. I'm paying 2x for many systems, such as engines, props, cabinetry. Most of the catamarans I see look like ikea condos on floats. It's really hard to find a catamaran which hits all of the criteria I'd expect in a price point I'm happy with. Monohulls just seem sturdier, and while smaller per foot, they cost less. It feels like the density of value/$ spent is higher on a monohull, but you have to put up with the various monohull negatives. This video doesn't make the decision easier XD. Cost, Performance, Safety, Comfort. Monohull, Catamaran, maybe a tie, catamaran. I would actually give the safety rating to the monohull. They are clearly designed for water, whereas catamarans are designed for comfort. Catamarans attempt to defy nature, while monohulls embrace it. Bouyancy is not something a monohull deals with so much as it embraces. I'd trust a monohull in a storm much more than a catamaran, which clearly has many more stress points and less capability for "wading" through the water. On the other hand, a sailboat can sink if punctured... Still, I think the odds of a boat threatening puncture is less than ending up in a moderate storm.

Really price point should be the standard for comparing sailboats, feet are subjective since cats are almost twice in area and more expensive. Maybe comparing a 43 ft cat vs a 50 ft mono would be better. The thing I liked the most of what you said is that catamarans retain more value, that’s important. Anyway I would like to know what you can get with 250,000 dlls in cats and monohauls . I liked your video a lot though. To be honest I had other channels that I preferred in the past but now you’re on the top of my list. You are great people.

To put the money and maintenance thing into perspective when trying to convince my wife sailing is in our near future, I think I broke through to her when I explained that this winter alone, I have spent 60 hours removing snow from our driveway on our acreage, and the snow blower cost $23000. This process repeats itself every year with nothing to show for it except a road that can be used without getting stuck in the middle of it. (Canadian)

Hi I've been on a Catamaran before several years ago and prefer Catamarans as a passenger, long hauls are great as long as you don't mixed tides and lose a mast, and yet I'd ride again.I think catamarans will be the ride of the future.

I would like to make an observation on the speed issue of Catamarans. Nicki and Jason have a Cat built for comfort and so it is heavier and gets less speed. On the other hand a Cat like La Vagabond is equipped for speed and as such reaches as much as 22+ knots at peak of sailing.
