Here is a game from the Catan Community Saturday night qualifier. This was game 3. I was coming off of 2 losses of the night and really wanted to just play a good game and table. Well... I got it! This was an incredible game and full of twists and turns.

So interesting watching the table work together. Great game. Amazing when Sparrow was leaping ahead and you all managed to stop him. Must have been frustrating for Sparrow. My sympathies. Drew being sneaky AF. That was fun when it was coming to the end game.

Crazy game never thought I would be on this end of the scene especially to think I was just watching these vids only 4 months ago seeing catan for the first time. Can't believe if I just robbed you at the end putting you at 3 wood then I would have had around a 50% chance to win this game that orbit.

GG, but id say be extra careful when dealing with table generals like Drew... He used you longer than you should have let him imho. He talked you guys into some extremely advantageous ports and out of blocking him multiple times when he was on 8/9 and had winning rolls. Almost even talked his way out of getting road taken from him lol.

Typical game. one guy is blazing ahead, the other three gang up and pull him down, suddenly one of the other three is ahead, now there is infighting and finally the original topper comes last. haha. I'm typically the original leader who gets ganged upon
@shadesonbroadway

That’s exactly why pacing is super important. Good players will collaborate against the leader to have the best chance themselves :)
@dandydrew
@dandydrew 11 ай бұрын
Typical in the sense that the leader was getting blocked BUT the amount of collaboration, trading, coordinating blocks, and balancing is something you just don’t see in auto-matches. I think if Sparrow just focuses on building points he most likely still wins. Going into the dev deck was not the call for him given that it was relatively dry.

Yeah, I was left with the same feeling. Drew played the game well by shifting focus onto Sparrow even when he should have been the target. I'm happy that Sparrow at least convinced the table to give black the road. That was the right play for the board. And I believe maybe Drew got a bit too emotional just at that point, probably lost a bit of sympathy from the other players. But then again, it is super difficult to keep the mental in such a long game, where you've been fighting just for a chance, and then seeing the game slip out of your hands. Feel like you guys could have chatted a bit more with Sparrow post game though and given some recognition. Got a feeling that he probably left the game feeling a bit down, which is not nice when he played it well.

You realize me coordinating the board gave everyone a chance to have winning rolls in this game? To say anyone got “seduced” in this situation seems like a strange read given how close we were to losing in the first 30 minutes. Some games require strong leadership and players listening for the right person to make it work.

I'm surprised that this is fun for y'all. All the gaslighting and misdirection from you midgame makes it super cringe to watch. What's worse is that you seem to try to leverage your position and rank as authority figure in the community to convince people that their decision making is poor when it clearly isn't. I've got a love-hate relationship with your content Drew. On the one hand I love all the tactics and strategy you have taught me, on the other hand seeing such a nice and genuine person turn into a lying scumbag for the sake of the game really makes me question why I play. I'm not convinced that this is an essential part of the game. I wish you the best of luck with your games in the future, though I hope I never have the misfortune of playing with you. EDIT - after seeing other comments, it sounds like everyone signed up for being gaslit and lied to and found it enjoyable. So while I would never want this in one of my games it sounds like it was expected here.

@@dandydrew I think the comment was more than unproductive, as it highlights my perspective on key issues facing our community - one's that I'd love to see community spokespeople take more acute stances on. That said, I respect your desire for positivity in the comments (one of your most admirable traits) and can appreciate that you aren't making any commitments to changing your gameplay tactics. While I may feel certain ways, there's no doubt that your content drives more people towards this game, which hopefully helps us build a stronger community. Best of luck to you, and thanks for all your hard work.

It sounds moreso that your issue is with the game, than the creator. If you are looking at high level competitive play, this is what it looks like. If you want light hearted casual fun, there are plenty of channels out there for you. Catan is a game of manipulation. Plain and simple. One thing I will add, is what one says or does in a game does not reflect who that person is outside of the game. Drew is a standup guy, these kind of comments aren't constructive.
@808pierce
@808pierce 11 ай бұрын
@@shadesonbroadway Thanks for the thoughtful comment. I agree this is what high-level comp play looks like currently. I disagree that this means Catan is a game of manipulation or that it aught to be that way. I haven't heard a good moral justification for why it should be a part of the game. Catan isn't a free-for-all. The game has a ton of examples of having a moral code which gets upheld at a community level. There's widespread agreement on the moral problems with griefing and card dumping. Most see this as problematic behavior because it tears at what makes the game fun for people. I don't think most people don't want to be gaslit when they play catan. I certainly am not expecting to be lied to like we see here, the same way that I'm not expecting to be revenge robbed all game by the first person that I place the robber on. I'm aware that in certain circles lying is seen as both a core part of the fun and expected to happen. If I join a game expecting gaslighting I'm agreeing to it being acceptable (no problem with that), but I don't think most players are expecting to be gaslight when they fire up colonist. I take issue because this kind of lying seeps into the rest of the community and is justified as "high-level" play rather than a niche offshoot where people get to live out fantasies of manipulation. People watch these videos and then lie to/gaslight other players that are not expecting or wanting this, and that bothers me. Lastly, about my comment being not constructive - I disagree. I'm championing a claim on the expected morality in game in an effort to both discourage Drew from doing this, and also to show others that Drew's take on acceptable play isn't universal. To be clear, I'm not calling Drew a lying scumbag out-of-game, but I am calling him a lying scumbag in-game. No one seems to disagree that he lies in game to gain advantage. If what you do in-game isn't a reflection of your out-of-game character, then my assessments of your in-game character shouldn't bother you out of game. But I think that these accusations of people's in-game character bother people in the "high-level" community because they want to feel like their in-game persona has integrity and it bothers them that not everyone agrees that this kind of behavior in-game is morally acceptable. And perhaps my main point is that it's only acceptable if people are expecting and wanting it to happen. Hence why I wouldn't want to play with Drew. That said, upon reflection and reading the comments from other players it seems like everyone here signed up to be gaslit and found that enjoyable, so I'll take my opinion somewhere else :p
