The day finals is here! Last Friday I live streamed on Twitch the Friday night qualifier for the Catan Community open tournament. I am going to share all the games played on Friday to give you a full open qualifier experience.
Quick update - I made the playoffs BUT Catan Community had changed the time for semis 4 hours earlier than usual. I clearly missed the fine print on this one and unfortunately missed a chance to play in the Sunday event. We do have a day finals though and it's this game right here!
Please be respect to all the players who will be featured during this series. If you are enjoying the content, please don't forget to like and subscribe to continue to keep the channel growing!
Stay great and enjoy!

Hi Drew! Been following your channel since you started i. Your videos have become (almost) a daily routine and I really appreciate the top notch Catan strategy insight you provide. In my opinion, it's unrivaled on KZfaq. What I appreciate the most in your videos, though, is your general demeanor and attitude towards the game - responding to unforeseen events like being ploughed with optimism and resilience. The mentality you inspire has taught me to become a better Catan player. However, there have been a few videos where I notice your frustration (such as your former tournament video). I don't blame you for becoming frustrated at times, it's natural. However, during post-game analysis I would love for you to reflect more on how events during the game affected your mentality, and whether or not you could have reacted better in those specific situations. I think this could provide value both to you and your viewers. Cheers, keep the content up!

Thank you for sharing the kind words, and you are right that I am not immune to bad moments or frustration. For me, I’ve played in probably close to 50+ tournaments at this point and what I’ve learned is to reset before each game and move on. Even if it’s a good game, you have to go into the next game with a clean slate. This is generally why I don’t mention too much about my mentality or emotions as it’s generally better to not let those negative emotions stew or stay around - Letting go and staying focused is huge for me… when I can. The short answer is “Yes, I could react better in certain situations.” I try my best to be unbiased in my analysis but it’s difficult to encompass all the nuances. If I mention 1 thing, I am sure I will forget something else. Lol Appreciate the feedback and I will keep it in the back of my mind next time around in those situations.

One technique is called 'labelling', and to get the most out of it, you need to practice it in every day life, not just high stress situations. However, even just doing it in the moment will have a marked impact on mood if done correctly. It's a concept used in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and has proven track record in treatment of PTSD, addiction, depression, anxiety, etc. The general concept is that you see your emotion from a distance and accept it as something that happens, but without having to get caught up in it. Having the emotion is not within your control so shouldn't bear judgement, how you react to the emotion is within your control. Here's how it works: 1. Before the game, try to think about the likely situations that could trigger the emotional state where you feel out of control. Consider how you would prefer to handle this situation and picture yourself doing it. This primes you to be on the lookout and react with intention. 2. In the moment when you're triggered, describe to yourself in your head the emotion you have right now and what caused it to be. Tip: instead of "I am ", say "I am feeling " E.g. "I'm feeling anger right now. I'm feeling anger because I just got robbed even though another player is in the lead." It's important that you do this with acceptance and no judgement. It's understandable that this situation could generate a feeling of frustration or anger, and that doesn't make you bad. If anything, take a moment to congratulate yourself on recognising your emotional state mindfully instead of getting caught up in it. 3. Then move your attention from what you're feeling right now, to what you want to do instead. E.g. in Colonist it could be "Let's go back to tracking Red's hand." or "Let's focus on my next objective and how I'm going to accomplish it after that curve in the road." The anger or frustration can remain in your peripheral awareness for a bit while you do this, just don't make it the focus of your attention. It should quickly fade. If you practice this technique in other situations, like if your train is delayed or another driver cuts you off, it will come more easily.

I was wondering if oranges best second placement might have been 6-5 for the free road towards the 6-3-12? This play would kill black’s road game while strengthening orange’s. It’s unlikely that black would prioritize the race to the 6-3-12 over the 3-1 port. And orange easily could have got sheep for first settle on 6-3-12 from drew through the VC. Great game Drew as always

 @DandyDrew - Catan You use a lot of strategies that I've seen played in other social games. It's pretty neat to watch. Small things like being bluntly honest when you are in a dominant position go so long, for whatever reason the honesty disarms people. I liked when you were "complaining" about black not hitting you, it confused Orange to some extent to the point that he was still amicable with you, realizing a little too late that he was causing himself to lose

Amazing sportsmanship on oranges part! Regarding orange on the last pick I kinda like the 5/6 starting road and point at the 4/9, or give yourself a second win condition with roads ands proactively block blacks road network. Gotta expect to 4 for 1 for a sheep early but that’s fine, the 4/9 is a monster position and you have solid production. Wheat might also be an easy 1 to 1 trade for sheep. Maybe the players are just too good and will proactively block that setup?

So with the road situation, early on it already looks like black is gonna get it. They have the connect and a lot of road material. How do you decide to fight it or maybe just give it? And if orange has to fight it, since they can get a connect too, who's gonna fight red on OWS and army? Realistically that would be orange too right? Such a pickle if you're orange here.

Do you intentionally not get settlement to port when you clearly had the cards? To not make it look like you’re winning? Therefore you get dev cards?
@dandydrew
@dandydrew Жыл бұрын
The settle wasn’t going away. Better I keep the devs flowing to make sure I secure army and look for things such as VPs and monos. The ore port isn’t really that great considering I want to use the ore for devs and cities.
@ZZubZZero
@ZZubZZero Жыл бұрын
How do you feel about getting a VP as first dev card? I had it too in my last 3 or 4 games, that the first dev card I buy is a VP. It just feels so bad, resources are costly early in the game and I'd much better like a robber to deblock myself or steal a valuable resource, securing a certain position. Or any other dev card to do that. It's still a point I know but it just feels like I 'wasted' 3 resources and get behind in tempo.
@dandydrew
@dandydrew Жыл бұрын
VPs on the whole are a great thing. The time they are a problem early.is when you can ONLY win with getting army and you lose pacing to secure it. With my setup, I have a good amount of flexibility to where I don’t necessarily NEED army to win. This is the main issue with going full OWS - If you don’t secure army, it’s very difficult to win unless you get god tier pulls.

Not so sure that’s the case at all. By tossing out the ore, I lose a lot of middle game potential for cities and devs, which is one of the main reasons I won this game in the first place. You can make the case that I can better Port the brick but that’s coming in coordinated with wood anyways so it’s generally useful. Also taking away the 3:1 does bring a lot more notice to orange who needs a port in this game… better I keep him with options and not hurt his game too much for long term cooperation. Ultimately porting the ore is way too slow.

Usually really like your content, but the last few videos I've watched have not been as good for me. Too much working with others - making it way too easy for you. It's borderline collusion. One thing when you're working together to take out a much stronger opponent...another thing when a player keeps feeding a stronger opponent. Not a fun thing when you're on the other side of it in the game or as a spectator.
@dandydrew
@dandydrew Жыл бұрын
Too much working with others in a trading and cooperation based strategy game? Would you prefer we all mute each other, not trade or dealmake, and pray that the dice treat us well enough so that we win? You have to realize the skill of being able to work tables and communicate effectively is one of the most impactful skills in Catan at the highest level. You might not like that dynamic but that’s how the game goes. The skill gap becomes a lot more immense and noticeable when you initiative the communication aspect. I prefer a meta where the luck element can be mitigated the most and VC is one of the best ways to do that. Thanks for the comment!
@novascotia1903
@novascotia1903 Жыл бұрын
@@dandydrew Thanks for your response. I didn't say that you shouldn't make deals or talk with each other. The problem was you were talking primarily with only one of the others. Orange basically acted like your farm team in this game - aside from the very end of the game - he did exactly what you told him to do. Sure it's not your fault he did this - but if everyone was on the audio call - it would have been a more level playing field. No one likes to watch a blowout game in sports, especially if all the calls are going their way. It's also kinda synonymous to large market teams trading for all the big time players - the audience then wants to cheer for the underdog. In other words, I started cheering for the others, because to me it seemed unfair how the two of you were collaborating so early on and throughout the duration of the game regardless of how well people were doing. Anyways, I'm not here to start a fight or anything and I think you do an excellent job of breaking down the different strategies of the game of Catan (perhaps the best at it) - but I do think there is a line with trading and making deals that turns it from being a good strategic move to being collusion. I'll leave you with one last analogy...do you cheat on a test if you can get a way with it and it helps you be successful on a test? (In other words, at what point in catan would you not accept a trade that is clearly unfair - say someone offered you a 4 for 1 that would help you win?). Cheers, and have a great weekend!
@dandydrew
@dandydrew Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the thoughtful response. I understand your point of view - I wish everyone joined VC for this game but they decided not to. Yes, I did cooperate with orange but I also wasn’t getting robbed by black or blue, and pulled near perfect development cards at the right time. Things certainly went my way and I don’t think it was purely because I had a farm team in this case. All the other devs were bought from my production and steals. You bring up an interesting point about fairness and collusion/cheating. You have to understand that orange won 3 of his qualifying games to get to the day final - He isn’t a bad player by any means to be able to do that. At the same time, I am one of the strongest voice chat players in the online scene. I’ve found if you want to play in competitive scenes like discord and you aren’t aware of some of these strategies, you will learn pretty fast they are out there or fall behind. Orange messaged me after the game and said he learned a lot after that game. I love that attitude as it shows me he will continue to improve. If a table is going to give me a clear advantage in using my communication skills, then I will take it every time. Kingmaking (or cheating) trades are something completely different and you know when they are happening. It’s a matter of a player’s intent. I understand maybe the audience might not like the dynamic overall but this is the reality of competitive online games (sometimes). Let’s hope future games have everyone in VC next time. Appreciate your response and support! :)
