Nice to see this video. I have watched it one other time. You went through based upon July 2016 and the water level, at almost the exact same time I did. 20 foot expedition canoe full cover. And I did not escape quite unscathed. The hole you showed off your bow in Big Drop 3,, laughing,, ate me. Had it bailed out and on my way 30 minutes later Wanna do it again.

Nice work in a canoe! I just barely started learning how to paddle a canoe, and I love it! Cataract seems like it would be very tricky and intimidating in one.

@@WholesomeFolsom75 There are canoes,,, and there are canoes. I tend toward long travel,, reasonable gear,, fair amount of food, up to 2 months. So I paddle an expedition canoe 20' and 42" beam, full cover, skirts integral to the cover. In white water ALWAYS on my knees. Of all these things, the feature I most suggest is paddle on your knees in white water,, perhaps thigh straps,, but I do not like thigh straps. The reason for on your knees is to allow the boat to leap and gyrate beneath you and you just stay centered and riding a line down and through. If you sit in a seat,, the boat will throw you left and right, same with a saddle. My craft running Class IIIs and Class IVs will twist left and right often up to 45 and more degrees,, knees can allow this and still leave you quiet in the center. Same with nose high or low,, the knees allow that motion as well and , again,, allow me to stay in the center of the bull ride. . I normally sit the stern seat in flat water,, ballast in the bow to about 45 % of total. I like the bow a bit fluffy so it can respond rapidly. Ballast is drinking water and food most,,, I add rocks as the water is consumed. I add rocks if paddling against the wind (Too normal on western rivers) The one thing to warn you about is speed in the initial drop into a major rapid. You absolute cannot,, must not enter behind a raft within 200 yards. You MUST stay in the wave train after the rapids. My canoe has hit 18 mph GPS many times,, the eddy line is going the other way. Most white water canoes are durable hard shell plastic banana boats, center seat and air bags front and rear. Lots and lots of fun,, but they cannot carry food and gear. 2016 was a full Powell for me. Cataract was on the way. Launched mid June, Green River , Wyoming,, Hauled out Lake Havasu City, Labor Day. Just beginning planning for next summer. Thinking Green River, Utah to the Confluence and then Cat and Lake Powell,,, haul out at Page AZ. (At least to Hite.) You handled your dory very well, expertly, in the video. You'll have no trouble switching to a canoe if you wish to.

@@Sailor376also I appreciate your comments about canoeing... I plan on doing a lot more in the future. My current situation is that I received a very tattered whitewater canoe for free. I ended up cleaning up all the worn through areas and filling areas in with epoxy mixed with certain fillers for what I wanted to accomplish. Then I faired and fiberglassed the canoe and re-painted it. I've taken it out for a couple weekends on the Green River, and it seems great. It was originally a Royalex canoe, made by Mohawk. I patched the flotation bags so they seem good now. I figure I can take the flotation bags out and load it full of gear and food in dry bags and waterproof barrels for some pretty decent outings.

@@WholesomeFolsom75 I think my first suggestion if you are going to do,, Deso/Gray? Full cover. I even throw a few 6 dollar inflatable mattresses under the cover to give it a convex shape,, to shed water. Class I and Class II,, you only deal with spray and splash,, Well packed good attention to total flotation, dry bags waterproof cases, etc. spray deck optional. Class III spray decks start earning their living, fair amount of water comes in. Class IV and Class V spray deck, full cover and skirts required. There will from time to time solid water coming down thew deck to you, 1 to 4 feet deep. My canoe has gone full submarine several times. Paddling a canoe through big white water,,, you kinda stay in the middle, kneeling up or down,, the boat must be allowed to gyrate left, right, up, down,,, but you stay quiet and head straight through,, skiing moguls,, a twisty trail bike? You stay quiet in the middle. Watch Michelle Jeniker (?) run high hurdles,,, her head almost does not move up or down. Her head comes straight and level down the track.. Same for running a canoe through big white water. Let the boat seek the path, you just stay centered. With ample yahooing and a bottle of Jack Daniels or other to greet the end of the day. If you want a buddy for Cat or other,, give a hollar. If I can, I will.

Low water... the holes are mostly rocks and shallow pourovers... The boat I have is made of wood... Yeah, I missed some waves I should have hit, but first time down cataract, and rowing a boat I put a year, and thousands of dollars into building, I was being conservative. Troll away Mr. Derf
