Catching Shad In Deep Water - Taped Cast Net

Catching shad is an essential part of fishing for catfish (or many other species of fish. Our water has been unseasonably cool and the shad have been really scattered with some of them still in deep water so I headed out to catch some bait and try to catch a. few blue catfish. I headed out to the deep water to catch shad using my taped cast net.
A taped cast net works really well when you get into deeper water as the tape around the perimeter of the net keeps the net open, which means you'll catch more shad so I'm covering the essentials of catching shad in deep water and then showing the ins and outs of catching shad using a taped cast net.

What cast net do you use most often? Have you ever used a taped net?

1/2" Barracuda 10' most of the time. Have a 1/4" Betts Super Pro 10' for the little shad when crappie fishing. Then, the 1" mesh Fitec 10' for the big gizzards! Had the Barracuda taped this past winter for deep bait but the tape finally let go. Bait was at 30' under my light and I was only catching 6 to 8 per throw. After the tape let go and I ripped it all off, the next 2 casts got 2 baits. Tape really makes a difference in deep water.

Bait Buster Bait Cast Net 1/2" Sq. Mesh Green (7 Ft.) for most of the year. I use a Bett's deep hole taped net with I believe 5/8 inch mesh, 7 ft. Has 50 foot of rope tied to it from the factory which is perfect. I'm surprised youre still catching your shad in deep open water but not sure when you filmed this. Most of the shad in deep water have thinned out enough to where I don't mess with them but have been catching them up the creek in 10-12 fow. Water temp in main lake is 60 degrees and up the creek is 63 degrees.

Nice job Chad! I could give you some net throwing pointers. No telling what you could catch if you could get that net to pancake. Check out the Calusa method. That is the way I learned to throw one and I can pancake a 10 footer but not in that kind of wind. Good job I always enjoy your videos and I hope to meet you someday. Peace

I have a Garmin livescope and my taped net will stay open at 10 feet all the way down and no tape will close to under 5 feet before it gets 15 feet down. Both my nets are 7 foot radius, and the taped nets are more forgiving on bad throws.
