I believe Watkins makes a "root beer" flavoring you could also use possibly in your whipped topping and it would take the place of the ice cream taste that comes with mixing a float🍺

Hi Catherine from another Catharine 🇨🇦😊. Thank goodness you’re not using Cool Whip! Gross stuff! Another float that is fantastic is Orange Crush pop with vanilla ice cream. Really foams up in the glass when you put the ice cream into the glass with a small amount of the pop in it. Once you have as many scoops of ice cream in as you want, then I recommend holding the glass over the sink while very slowly pour in the pop. It is sooooooo refreshing! I’m going to try this pie with A&W Root Beer, then I’ll ty one with with Orange Crush. YUM!! Thank you for hoping this recipe. 😊😊. Cathy

FWIW, there are A&W root beer flavor packets, intended for use in a bottle of water. You can usually find them at a dollar store. Most I've seen are sugar free. This may have been what your sister was talking about. I bet you could add one or two of these packets to your recipe to really boost the root beer flavor...😉

A little bit weak on the root beer flavour. Skip the milk and just use straight root beer with the pudding. There is enough creaminess texture and mouthfeel with the heavy cream. Try it.

We make it with red pop and pineapple Mt. Dew ,cool whip, coconut, cherries yummy pretty much the same and call it a Hawaiian. You can also add a little cream cheese to come the pudding and pop mixture
