Used to make this too. I agree Church cookbooks are the best...along with State Fair and the school fundraiser cookbooks. Nothing like home cooked food.

My mom used to make this but she would add a cup of chopped pecans to the crust mix and crushed up toffee pieces on top of the dessert. She called hers Chocolate Delight. Loved the topping.

I make this with slight variations. I put a cup of chopped pecans in the crust and I use chocolate fudge instant pudding instead of just chocolate. I use just one cup of confectioners sugar with the cream cheese and half of large container of cool whip. I layer it crust, cream cheese layer, chocolate pudding, rest of cool whip on top. Shaved Hershey bar on top. Delicious.

Thanks for sharing! A well known variation is with chopped pecans in the crust and lemon 🍋 pudding as the 3rd layer with the remaining coolwhip on top.

Whenever I make a new recipe from our church cookbook I try to send a note (yes, an actual handwritten note) to the person who submitted it letting them know how much we enjoyed it and that we thought of them as we did.

Pecans or Walnuts crushed with the bottom layer. It is really good. I did the flour the butter and CD pecans or Walnuts crushed.!

I have made this many many times, I add walnuts to my crust and sprinkle on top. I also use 1 1/2 Cups of flour, I think that is just the right amount. I just use the chocolate pudding and use the remaining cool whip on top as the last layer. Elaine's version looks just as good. Believe it or not this came from an old employee recipe book from Kmart back in the early 90s when I worked there, this is the only recipe I had memorized, lol. Oh, and you can always change up the pudding, I have done pistachio, with pistachio or pecans in the crust 🙂

I make that and put cool whip on top and that’s called four layer delight. It’s really good with either that crust or a graham cracker crust then the second layer then cherry pie filling on top then cool whip. Oh my, now I have to make these.

I’m from Buffalo NY, we call it slush cake! Made with any flavor pudding, crushed walnuts are added to the crust as well! 😋

We call it "Better than Robert Redford Cake". We top it with a layer of Cool Whip. I prefer chopped pecans instead of walnuts. Either will work.

I have seen many variations to this recipe and have tried several. The variation I grew up with had chopped pecans in the crust, same cream cheese mixture, but instead of mixing the pudding and the cool whip together, I make the pudding using the pie version (less milk), spread that on top of the cream cheese layer and then top the pudding layer with cool whip. I am going to have to try this version next time I make it. Other variations included using something else besides the pudding layer, like blueberry pie filling. Thanks for the recipe ideas!

Thank you for reminding me of this dessert! My recipe file has been in storage for 3 years so this recipe had completely been forgotten. But I used to make it all the time when my husband was still alive. (He had to help me eat it or I'd it all myself!) I would add chopped pecans to the crust & the name was Chocolate Yum!! So good... Thank you for the great memories.

I have made that for years. I put cool whip on top fir fourth layer and call it 4 layer delight. It is good with several flavors of instant pudding. I did add 1/2 cup crushed pecans to crust mixture . A few years ago Jello came out with a instant pumpkin flavor of pudding mix. OMG. It beat any pumpkin pie I ever made and was easier and made more dessert.I got it originally from a church cookbook and have seen it repeated many times. Almost always with crushed pecans in the crust.

I always put a handful of instant coffee in my chocolate pudding or brownies and it will make the chocolate taste better.

I’ve been making this for years and I first ate it at a church pot luck. It was called” Lucky if There is Any Left.” It had a cup of pecans in the crust. We didn’t add the cool whip to the pudding. We added it to the top and sprinkle with more pecans. You can also replace the pudding with strawberries and strawberry gel. You can also do lemon pudding.

Yes this is more similar to the one I made, no cool whip in the pudding. It’s more decadent and richer without it, to me anyway.

Catherine, I’ve made this dessert many times. The crust I made was flour, butter and pecans chipped up. The chocolate and cream cheese. We always called it chocolate delight.

This is called “Four Layer Delight” in one of my Church Cookbooks from back in the 70’s😁. My families FAVORITE !! It can be frozen also. I make it with Chocolate Fudge instant pudding or Devil’s Food. The fourth layer is Cool Whip.

I live in Nashville Tennessee and that cake is been around for a long time it used to be called Barbara mandrell cake. But instead of the crust it was crushed nuts. I don't know what kind of nuts it was my mother used to make it but it was some kind of crushed nuts for the crust. But I like your version better. I just love your videos.

I'm all for Church Cookbook recipes! Brings me back to my childhood and enjoying Sunday dinners in our Church Fellowship Hall. This dessert was a HUGE hit at all functions and at home, except we called it "Chocolate Torte" 😋 So good!

I’ve had this before and it is really delicious. My husband doesn’t eat chocolate so I have tried with lemon and strawberry pudding and both are also delicious!
