Went to Mass Christmas morning as I am away with relatives....no carols just 'Christian' rock music complete with electric guitar solo not even live just amplified playback on CD.... after communion we sat through a X Factor style rendition of O Holy Night followed by the congregation giving her a round of applause like a concert!! The whole carry on was had zero to do do with any understanding of what the liturgy is.... deeply distressing and upsetting

I Brought up as Catholic, but i left the church and became an atheist for more than 30 years, but God brought me back to believe in him, i started studying religions, Islam, budism, protestants, new age... But some how i found Jesus and Mather Mary, , i went in a Catholic church and i was disappointed with the Mass it was a copy of a Anglican Mass mixed with pop singing of protestants. I started studying and i discovered that existed a older tradicional mass that was in latin, i called my mum and she told me that was true when she was younger the Mass was in latin, but one day changed, she said your father Love The old Mass, feel weeks ago i found a church with latin mass, i was lost in the celebration, but i felt like god was there with me.

Very Catholic granny. & I’m a confirmation teacher here in the states. Does “old” or “new” mean the Tabernacle & altar is any less important? The core of us as Catholics isn’t only about the mass. We’re there for Jesus and the Holy Spirit and we shouldn’t be distracted with such minor debates about things that don’t matter. As long as I’m lucky enough to be near the tabernacle then I’m lucky enough! I went to Israel this year and stayed in the holy city beside the holy Sepulchre and I was there at 430am/5am everyday visiting Him in silence. Excellent talk.. your frustration with the state of affairs is palpable. .In recent years I started going occasionally to the TLM for a lot of the reasons you just outlined. I love the holiness and silence, the reverence towards the Eucharist which is sadly lacking elsewhere with so many congregations that can act like they're in the market place at times. . . I went to Mass yesterday in Glenstal Abbey and think the Benedictines have definitely got their act together regarding a marriage between the 2 strands.. Beautiful liturgy in English, interspersed with Latin hymns and wonderful sense of reverence on Christmas day.. I think the middle ground, that place between the 2 extremes is certainly achievable if more N O priests would work a bit more of the TLM approach to acknowledge the greatness of God present in the Eucharist and slow down a little, while the TLM advocates frankly be a bit more relaxed and less rigid. This is the Catholic Church which the gates of Hell will never prevail against, despite our best efforts. Finally, Thank you you all at Immaculata productions, your efforts are appreciated. Thank you Father for your talk. I’m sorry to say my experience over the past three years has been that there is a growing hostility by bishops and priests towards the very few of us presenting ourselves kneeling and wishing to receive on the tongue. The blighted and very dubious ‘pandemic’ we are going through has been taken full advantage of in order to further marginalise the traditionally minded. Many sanctuaries have been commandeered by forceful women whose aggression is enough to drive any man from the faith. Funerals - especially in Ireland have become a form of cabaret with personal belongings of the deceased being taken onto the alter during mass and all kinds of testimonies and praises showered on the deceased, plus favoured songs being sung as hymns. I’m not a critic of Vatican II, but most of what goes on in Novus Ordo masses these days is nothing to do with V II. Communion in the hand was only ever intended to be offered by indult, yet it has become the ‘enforced norm’ by the radical, liberals in the church. In fact, it’s fair to say that the N O Mass he’s been completely sabotaged by the liberal elite, of whom many great popes warned us - eg Leo XIII (RIP), Pope St Pius X, Pius X and Pius X. I admire you zeal for unity and I share it, but the great problem is that TRUTH and error don’t mix well! It can do though, and the proof is to be seen in the Brompton Oratory in London (and in its sister church in Manchester - St Chads), but reverence abounds at both. Equally, both have retained their Alter Rails, although they will abide by people’s personal wishes. Interestingly however, the vast majority receive kneeling! What possessed bishops and PPs to rip out these sacred in the first place do you suppose? Kneeling and in the hand remains the ‘Universal Rite’ and, please God, always will. So I fear your talk today represents a gross over simplification of a very real and deeply troubled Church. Young people today are very aware of these problems (I’m in my 70’s myself by the way) and I see them coming in droves to our TLM masses in Warrington. Yes we need prayer, but not just to ask Gos to solve these problems, but rather to ask Him for the Grace to be able resolve them by a very serious effort to remove the errors which caused them in the first instance. This is not a simple issue which can be massaged into the past.

The Church is really our mother. She is like any mother trying to get her children to stop shouting and fighting at each other and just get along and love each other.

I am a daily mass goer. I have been forced to look for another parish, where novus ordo is said with reverence. You know straight away a well said Mass when you see one. MANY priests do not pray the mass with sufficient reverence, ESPECIALLY the Consecration.

Father Brendan, there is nothing wrong with the Novus Ordo Mass. What has turned us off is the complete lack of respect shown to God under the "spirit of Vatican II." When people go to Mass, they should want the one hour to be about God and them on an individual basis; One on one. The Traditional Latin Mass (TLM) folks are only asked to be allowed to worship God as Catholics have done for over a thousand years, quietly and devoutly. Holy Communion should be received on the tongue while kneeling, given out by a priest or deacon. This is all we want to do; to worship God devoutly and in peace. Now, the folks that want to continue to attend their Novus Ordo parish, we hold nothing against them and respect their right to worship God in the Novus Ordo Mass. However, we should not be persecuted either for wanting the TLM. I expect that in the long run, the TLM will win out simply due to the blessings that God is pouring out upon it. To those "Modernists" who have infected the Church and seek to destroy the TLM, they would be well advised to recall the words of rabbi Gamaliel (Acts 5:34-39). If the resurgence of the TLM is from God, then no power on earth or hell will stop it.

I was raised on novus ordo mass. Few times I was as well present at old rite mass. While, it is true, that if the mass is celebrated with due respect, faith and love, novus ordo version might be almost as good...why Isay almost...Fr Chad Ripperger, priest and exorcist explain how devil reacts on old rites prayers..and knew rites prayers. Body, blood, soul and divinity of Christ is present in both mass. But in spiritual battle fr Chad explains how new ways of celebrating mass and newways of babtism( which in new rite is done without exorcised prayers, which was taken out from it after 2. vat. conc.; and that is why he wittness a case of 7 months old baby, babtiesd in new rite, accualy being possesed by devil.... In old babtism rite baby was exorcised from any possible curses passed on by family or other people who can for example curs pregnet woman out of jeloussy(if another woman wanted that man,who was taken by pregnant woman...etc\ and devil himsel manifested it many times that new rite is not as effective in combat with him. I go to an Old Order Low mass where it is often celebrated by a priest who tends to garble the Latin at 100 miles an hour. The form and components of the mass are nevertheless still superior to the New Mass in spite of this and there not being any great bells and smells added on. And there is still no room in Old Mass for going off piste with any of the craziness seen in the New. Essentially, the worst that can be ever be said is the celebrant rushed through it.

Thanks for your insight Father, happy new year to you. I'll throw in my penny's worth. Born and raised in Dublin, I sailed nicely in my very young years through the liturgical changes. Emigrated to France in the late eighties and discovered that the French seemed to be up on their feet for the entire duration of the Mass, I'm exaggerating a bit here. Anyway to cut a very long story short I went back to the Tridentine Mass of my childhood about 2007 or 08, not out nostalgia, because I had all but forgotten it, totally. I wouldn't consider myself fanatical, I attend the NO Mass when on holidays in France, or back in Ireland for the summer holidays etc.. Here in Lyon the "traditional" community is thriving, teenagers, young families with lots of kiddies, apparently the number of Priestly vocations is proportionately higher than that of the wider Novus Ordo Church, although I personally feel very VERY much a part of the Catholic - Rome/Vatican Church. To be perfectly honest, I don't think I would go back to the NO Mass, unless circumstances (moving away from here...) dictated it. You could spend hours comparing the two Masses, no point in getting into to that here, too long winded, but I have to say I have been a tad disappointed occasionally when I assist at the NO Mass. Won't go into the nitty gritty, have a lot of examples though. Anyway, very interesting subject, glad to watch your inspiring little talks Father, take care of yourself in 2023👍🏻🥂

I’m old enough to remember when the Latin Mass was the only Mass we knew. Though I have no argument with anyone who prefers it, I don’t. I’ve been to a dozen or so Latin Masses over the past few years and leave it feeling empty, sometimes angry. (It brings back all the clericalism and Jansenistic scrupulosity that informed so much of the Catholicism of the pre-Conciliar Church I was raised in, in which the Mass was often sped through in 30 minutes or less. Liturgical abuses didn’t start with the NO; there were simply abuses of another kind.) Don’t get me wrong - I’m as opposed to the Cirque de Soleil extravaganzas that the NO is sometimes turned into as anyone, but there IS such a thing as a reverent NO, and I for one would prefer it to the TLM any Sunday of the year. (Also, please don’t refer to me as a “Novus Ordo Catholic.” I’m a Catholic. Period. And unless you are over 70, I’ve been one since before you were born.)

Father, I appreciate this video. However, I have gone to new mass time and again, they often feel very much like a Protestant mass. Most importantly, being denied Communion on the tongue on knee is scorned by Norvus Ordo priests. Happened to me at St. Pats in NYC number of times. At least when I attend traditional mass I know I won’t be denied Host on the tongue.

I recall a great story in the messenger of a priest celebrating Mass in the mud in a concentration camp with the simple bread and wine. Great work.

I moved to the Trad mass during the lockdown. I tried to make an effort but spiritually, I didn't feel it was superior to the novus ordo mass. I went quite regularly, but no one spoke to me there si it was uncomfortable after a while. I felt there was a superior clique about some of the people. Not approachable. Both masses are valid. I know many holy priests in the novus ordo so I'm happy to stick with it.

It's not the presentation of the Vetus Ordo vs. Novus Ordo that is the controversy. Instead, it's the difference in the "sensi fidei fidelium" that is transmitted that creates the controversy as to what is the central action of true Catholic worship. Is the Mass the priest's offering of the Christ's sacrifice of Calvery in an unbloody manner after which the faithful are invited to recieve or is the Mass the community's coming together for the "Breaking of the Bread* where the consecration of the bread and wine is just a vehicle for a community celebration and the only reason for the faithful to attend Mass- to receive Communion? Let's talk about Ireland and the loss of faith before talking about Germany. Germany was problematic for decades if not centuries. But Ireland was solidly Catholic up until a few decades ago. So, for young Traditional Catholics to want to return to the Mass that their ancestors were willing to die for, should be understood in terms of wanting the same "sensi fideli fidelium" as their Irish forefathers in the Faith.

Before the disaster of Vatican II, attendance at Mass was very high, vocations were at their highest, and divorce was low. Annulments were not passed out like candy the way they are now. After Vatican II, vocations plummeted, religious left the Church in droves, and attendance plummeted as well. Jesus said, "By their fruits you will know them." No one can ever tell me different. I went to parochial school from kindergarten through 7th grade, from 1961 through 1968, right in the middle of the Vatican II tragedy. Even as a child I remember being very troubled by all the awful changes. As a musician, I find the bland, horrible music used in the N.O. mess just another symptom of the horror of what has happened. Finally, I will pray for but never love Bergoglio. He is hastening the destruction of the church, but Jesus promised that the True Church would never be destroyed, thank God!

I think Americans feel a greater loss of the old Mass because we don't have the great cathedrals or even churchyards. I grew up in the old mass in the French Canadian Church. and when Vat 2 happened it destroyed my family and others. We had flipping folk mass on a stripped down altar!!! Even at 10 years old I was appalled! My father went mad and became a devotee of Ayn Rand and threw us all under the bus! Now I'm a bit more educated and think the fault lie in the bishops--- maybe the communists put in by Bella Dodd. ( Why didn't she get them out?) My soul longed for the old cathedral Mass in Latin and French and all of it. Its not an accident that Church attendence shrank. The first time I went to Europe, I visited every cathedral I could. In America the bishops are knocking them down for low income housing. You're Irish. How much heart break can you take? ❤ I have found with Jesus in my life it doesn't matter the style of the Mass. It's Christ and Our Lady that matter and the love they grant us all.

If you think it's bad in the West, look at the situation of the Syro-Malabars in Kerala these days... Stuff like that can be avoided with up-front diplomacy and de-escalation. There's not much of that going on, it's just festering and will continue to do so until a real solution is found. I don't foresee riots etc. in cathedrals over TLM (like in India), but it is not going to get better without very strong but tactful Roman leadership. Zuppi, FWIW, might be just the one we need from the next conclave... I think the TLM will have a significant role to play in Ireland's recovery of the Faith. The kids seem mostly to be either totally uninterested or all-in and have no recollection of the last Council or the ideological wars coming from it, nor do they have any direct memory of the evil things done by priests who celebrated the old liturgy. They just look around and see old women holding hands singing bland songs at the NO, and they see a well-celebrated TLM where there are other young people, and for them it's a no-brainer. Pouring cold water on that is a bad idea. I'm with Gamaliel - if it's from God, leave it alone... if it's not from God, leave it alone...

From US you are right Father. I am 47...never been to a TLM. Saw one on TV it is very reverent and beautiful. I go to a reverent NO in a historic Catholic Church in my town...tabernacle behind altar check...statue of blessed mother check, statue if St Joseph and baby Jesus check....High Cross of Crucified Lord Check...good Polish priest check. Eucharist same priceless. We just have to fix the irreverent modernists that screwed up some NO...the mass is the mass...you dont go for the music, the priest or for social hour you go for Jesus in the Eucharist.

I like your channel Father, and I’m grateful to God that you’ve answered the call to your vocation and that you clearly take it seriously. But your characterization of us trads as purely about aesthetics is frankly a straw man. The content of the Mass was changed, some 75-80% of the prayers were removed. No more prayers at the foot of the altar for instance. Read “Work of Human Hands” by the late Fr Cekada for an excellent and approachable book on the subject. As a matter of fact the words for all 7 sacraments was changed, including the Divine Office. They created a new liturgical calendar too… There is outright heresy in the documents of Vatican 2. Lumen Gentium 1, 8, 15, and 16 just to name a few but there’s more. (See the videos of the late Fr Hesse for more.) So please don’t say we’re just about aesthetics; yes that’s part of our attraction to the old Mass. We want the Faith, the Faith of generations before us, and the Mass of the saints and martyrs. We want the faith as it was for our forbears before the modernists took a wrecking ball to it in the 1970s. I appreciate your willingness to wade into some tough issues Father, but for trads it’s about much much more than reverence and aesthetics. Once you attend Mass concelebrated in the Tridentine Rite, it becomes even more apparent what the issues are in the Novus Ordo rite. It is my sincere view that every single parish throughout Ireland should allow the weekly Mass to be concelebrated in both rites. But sadly this "radical" idea won't get any traction from the Irish episcopacy.

If people have that true relationship with Jesus, that inner relationship where they are guided by the Holy Spirit and they have the lens of Christ, they wouldn't want to change anything because it's the sacraments where we receive the graces. Cleanse your souls people of the world and receive Christ into your souls. Let's make more space for him in our hearts and grow in virtue.

Well said Father! I have no problem with a well celebrated ,NO mass,. I attended the TLM until I was 14, when the changes happened. My parents were very upset at the loss of the TLM at the time. My complaint about the NO is the choice given to priests in prayers in the NO eg a number of Eucharistic prayers with the result that the mist beautiful of all no 1 is never prayed. Also mist priests do not use the Confiteor but use the shortened form. There is something so humbling about the congregation and priest confessing they are sinners and asking both heaven and the congregation to pray for them.

If I am to go back to my Catholic school education where I learned in physics that for every action is an equal and opposite reaction then apply that logic to the "pontificate" of Frankie the Argentine which has been one of promoting far left wing liberal/progressive communist ideology, and as he keeps it up the more people turn away in favor of tradition. Why would one be surprised the wish for honoring tradition is rising? Also if the youth are seeking out a more traditional mass aren't we as the faithful supposed to take that as a sign from God? By all means dismiss a lot of what the youth do as youthful indiscretion but we are all told the call to come to mass is from God and we should be more heedful to that than confrontational. If there is one sure way to scatter people away, tell them to get in line and shut up. I will tell you Fr. that as someone at this very moment being called back to mass I am finding it a bit difficult too considering that the Catholic church is telling me as a straight white male that I must repent for my sins, all of them including new age sins like "white privilege", while telling sodomites to gleefully wallow in their sin.
