To everyone commenting and watching this video: We didn't make it to degrade Eastonmade or Andrew. We feel like we did everything in our power to have this process go smoothly. We were so excited and anxious to have a quality splitter and to work with what we thought was a reputable company. Our experience was less than that of everyone we had talked with and in our own research. We are disappointed in how a lot of things have been handled. We emailed and called Eastonmade several times before posting this video. We took videos to document the entire process. After multiple calls and emails with Henri, we wanted to share our experience. It is not our hope to gain publicity or subscribers by this video alone. Our channel's focus is about the adventures we go on as a family. The wood business is simply a part of our lives. We appreciate the time each of you has taken to view and comment on this video. Thanks again for your time and understanding.

@@bruceg5729 Thanks for watching and commenting Bruce. I'm not sure what is going on at Eastonmade since the second day I had the machine. The machine is going to the local Briggs & Stratton dealership near me to be checked out. I don't want to risk running the machine and ruining the engine so I guess I foot the bill on this one.

@@bfoutdooradventures I would run the snot out of it hoping it does break and then Henri would honor the warranty! I do believe that engine will be fine in the long run. The water coming out of the cylinder was reasonably clear so it couldn’t have been in there too long. I suspect Chris from Wolfe ridge is sabotaging eastonmade splitters because he is getting his lunch eaten by them.

I picked up my 12-22 yesterday at the Eastonmade factory on my open trailer. Coming home I ran into several snowstorms, complete whiteouts.I will definitely check my crankcase tomorrow before I start it. Never use automotive oil in a small engine as they have removed the Zinc from automotive oils as it poisons the catalytic converter through the PCV valve. I always start with Amsoil break in oil and then switch to Amsoil small engine oil after 30 hours. Always a good idea to check these things before starting because sick and jealous people will sometimes vandalize things they are incapable of ever having.

Hello B&F. I'm sorry to hear about your experience with your Easton Made Axis. I found your video due to my search for a commerical splitter. I had a very similar experience a few years ago when I ordered two Buyer's products 8' long topside aluminum tool boxes for my work truck. I meet up with the delivery driver in a storefront parking lot on Maryland's Eastern Shore. When the drive opened up the door to offload my order, a rush of hot air came out from the truck body. Outside Temperature was around 95° but inside was much hotter. I asking the driver about how long my order had been sitting in this truck. His reply, I don't know it was already loaded when he did the pickup. I opened the very dry cardboard boxes when I got home. Opening each aluminum box. I was very surprised to find about 2 quart's of water in one box and about 1 quart in the other 🤯. I called the vendor (Cherokee truck equipment) from which I purchased the boxes. They told me it sounded like a condensation issue as they were being transported. They told me to reply back after I mount the boxes to see if there is any upcoming water intrusion. Gladly to say the boxes are bone dry Now that they're mounted on my truck. (Wow condensation) I never had thought it would build up so fast. I hope Easton made recognizes your issue and brings a resolution.

Thanks for watching Ron. Sometimes it's amazing how things can happen and you don't realize it's possible. I'm pretty confident the engine water issue was not condensation due to the splitter was finished the week of the 5th and shipped. I received it 4 days later on a covered truck. I'm inclined to believe the engine was sitting outside before installing it and wasn't tested after the installation. Between the cylinder and crank holding water I estimate it had almost a cup of water in it.

Good morning, sorry to hear about the issue with your new Axis. This is long, so grab a cup of coffee😉 There’s only three ways water could get into the cylinder and it appears evident that it wasn’t through the intake port or you would have had carburetor issues as well as a wet air filter. That leaves the exhaust valve or the spark plug hole which would mean tampering. The exhaust appears to have an elbow directing downward, so unless it was inverted in storage that should eliminate that option. So, unless the factory never fired it up to test it, then vandalism is likely the case and you are simply the victim of someone else’s bad behavior. SEA FOAM or HEET Isopropyl (red bottle) I would suggest adding about an ounce of either to the crankcase oil to eliminate any leftover moisture. I would do this for numerous oil changes and do it after a couple hours of run time. I’ve done it countless times over the course of many years to engines and hydraulic systems alike with great success. Being in the commercial mowing business, it’s rumored that equipment has been submerged in ponds and sometimes the intel doesn’t get reported for a while 🤬 Obviously, the rust in your cylinder is concerning to you, as it would be to anyone. I for one wouldn’t be too alarmed, especially considering it hasn’t been broken in yet. The rings will polish the cylinder surface as they seat themselves. Naturally, I hope that Andrew addresses the issue and replaces the engine. Even if only to ease your mind and clear his conscience. For your own peace, perform a compression test on it now and then again at the end of the summer after its well run in. I’m guessing that your numbers will come up just like any other new engine after the break in period. Again, I’m sorry you’re experiencing this problem. Bless’ns to ya, Tedd
@bfoutdooradventures
@bfoutdooradventures Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the advice Tedd. I will add some Sea Foam to the crankcase oil. We have ran the machine for a total of 7 minutes on two oil changes to flush it out. Thanks for the reassurance on the engine, i know you are very knowledgeable about engines. .

@@bfoutdooradventures I suppose the legal standard is what a reasonable person would reasonably expect. One possible remedy is for Eastonmade to give you a partial refund and call it even. I would say, get a professional assessment of the damage as a basis for a lawsuit. If it was simply the rain that got in there I suppose that would be a design defect from Briggs, and it will happen again. Vandalism is a possibility. Perhaps the engine was laying down when it got rained on if it did.
@jakebredthauer5100
@jakebredthauer5100 6 ай бұрын
@@bfoutdooradventures I would not call it "catastrophic". It was only a small amount of water for a small amount of time. If the metal surfaces were cleaned and oiled, you would probably not be able to detect any damage at all with a naked-eye inspection. I deleted part of my earlier comment because I changed my mind about how serious it is. Because I have never heard of this problem before, I do not believe it was caused by condensation. If it were condensation, it would be happening all of the time.

Thanks for watching and commenting Todd. As far as we were told by the service department at Eastonmade on thursday, they expect the engine to be fine and don't feel it needs to be replaced. Hi Larry and Robin, Thanks for watching. 💕 We are thinking the same thing happened to them. Which is GREAT for them! It will take time to work through the kinks a day ger their business flowing like it should. It does stink that we are caught in the growing pains. What is really bothering us is that we were told that the engine is "fine," according to Henri at Eastonmade. They didn't want to really even hear or see what was happening. I can understand the wait time, but not other people getting to use one for free before a paying customer. I can understand how things get missed during final inspection, but not being ignored afterward. We are only asking for the engine to be replaced. We are going to follow up with the Briggs and Straton Dealer near us to have the engine fully inspected. That's at our own cost. We know the engine is compromised. We are looking to see how compromised and how much it will affect the engines' life expectancy as well as our warranty through them as this isn't something that likely happened during the manufacturing of the engine. Happy Mothers Day, Robin! 💕

Hi Tim, we really appreciate your comment. We agree that the water in the engine is a very hard thing to explain. My best guess is that it missed a step during the final stage of production. Or it ran for a minute or two, just to test the lines, and then was shut off. Our hope is for the engine to be replaced, to save on future costs that weren't our fault. Thanks for watching and commenting Sneak. I'm in agreement with you on the test before it left the factory. The machine is a well built machine but somewhere along the line a process failed and caused the issue. Waited a year for it to be shipped which was no big deal as I figured it would be worth the wait. It shipped during the winter and by the time it arrived in Oregon it was so badly corroded it quite literally looked like it was fifteen years old. And that is truly no exaggeration. Andrew sent me a new starter assembly which I appreciated but I had to pay a service center to do the work. The machine still looks terrible. I know that arguably it just a splitter but I expected a gold standard and was very disappointed. Every time I look at the machine it still pisses me off. From my experience I think Andrew is making a terrible mistake by not wrapping or covering his machines during transit, especially during the winter months when they are exposed to the road chemicals.

Hi Jimbo505, Thanks for your comment! Those are our thoughts entirely. We do realize and understand how quickly his business has grown. With that comes a lot of adjusting and growing pains. I realize, maybe more than Francis, that the wait time is par for what many experience. However, the issue lies in that the wait time is always changing. The follow-up with customer service was lacking. Even an email stating the estimated delivery day would be May 2023, instead of radio silence, would have been great! Giving Andrew bad publicity is not our intent. He has always seemed to be a genuine person with great business morals. Our only hope is to have the engine replaced. I saw another video on You tube where there was a little metal deflector on the end of the exhaust to push the hot gases away from the engine . Hi Kev, after much research and watching countless videos, it is the reason we went with the Eastonmade Axis. I truly believe they are a good company and am not sure why we are having this issue. I spoke with Henri directly and got his email address for sending the video and pics. I am unsure how long the water was in the machine since it came to me that way, and it was supposedly just out of production the week before. The trucking company picked it up on Friday the 5th of May and delivered it on the 9th on a covered trailer. @Skidder Kev I too have heard stories of people having to drain and dry out their engine, Just not from the factory. It's not something we did and have to accept responsibilty for and hope for the best for the engine, like swamping an atv that was our fault. If you purchased a brand new expensive piece of logging equipment and it was delivered on a trailer to you and you discover the engine full of water, would you just accept it and hope for the best? The point we were making is this is not a garage sale or Facebook item that we bought and accept the condition its in. Sorry if I come off rude, I don't mean to, but how would you feel and handle the issue if it was yours and your money involved? Thanks for commenting.

The water most likely got sucked in it from being on the delivery truck. If both the valves where open( Valve overlap), 70 mph airflow can create a venturi pulling rain water in as it went down the freeway. I've had it happen to me towing my splitter and forgetting to shut the gas off before I left., When I got there the cylinder was completely flooded with gas. Sucks that it happens , they really need to plug the mufflers as part of the shipment on an open deck trailer delivery. If one valve is shut ( most common) it don't really matter and most of the time one of them always will be shut.

I know they are swamped with orders, but it appears there is a breakdown in the system. I hope they make it right for you. Also, I thought you were getting the electric start? A new 14 hp Honda, twin cylinder with electric start is about $1600. You may be better off with that instead of the Briggs. Does everything else work good?

Thanks for watching Jennie & Jeff. Yes, we were upset, but we wanted to figure out how it happened. Production or transportation was our thought. We were going to go electric but we figured the battery would go dead during the winter months when we would only use it occasionally and didn't want to remove the battery and put it back in everytime we went to use it. The machine does pull over easy for a 14hp engine. It will be stored outside since we don't have a building on our land tall enough to get it into. The machine is at the shop getting inspecte, and it did start up after the oil flush I did on it. It has 5 minutes of run time on it from testing the engine and hydraulics. We are working with Eastonmade on the issue.

Hi Patrick, thanks for watching and commenting. I'm not sure whether it was or wasn't checked at the factory, but I would only assume they did in order to check the hydraulics and engine function. Didn't you post a Shorts the other day with the Axis running and making a few splits? What happened to that video and where was the Axis between then and when you discovered the water in the engine? I think someone vandalized your machine, doesn't seem like this could have happened any other way.
@bfoutdooradventures
@bfoutdooradventures Жыл бұрын
Hi Dan, we did post a video of Brittany making two splits of firewood AFTER I removed the water from the engine and oil, to check to see if the machine still ran. We ran it for five minutes to circulate the new oil and dumped it to replace it with a second batch of new oil to flush more water out of the crankcase. We were waiting for a response from Eastonmade and when we received the response that they weren't going to replace the engine we pulled the video. The motor runs and the hydraulics work, but the longevity of a $2000 engine is our concern. We discovered the water immediately after bringing it home from delivery at my work, since the engine couldn't be pulled over to demonstrate it for fellow employees. I contacted Eastonmade the next morning ( they were already closed on the day of delivery) and spoke with Henri. As i stated in the video, Henri said he had one machine previously that had the same issue and we came to the conclusion it may be hydrolocked from possible gas leaking into the cylinder during transport-filling the cylinder with fuel (simple fix- pull plug and turn over engine to release the excess gas from the cylinder).The only way for vandalism to happen would have been at the Eastonmade factory or in transit on an enclosed semi. We assumed Eastonmade would stand by their product, and we would start making videos this weekend with no mention of the issue we were having, and just run the machine while waiting for a replacement engine. If you noticed in the comments of that video, Eastonmade commented and apologized for the long wait time, but nothing about the engine issue we were dealing with them on. Had we known at that time they were not going to stand behind the product, we would not have posted that video.Thanks for watching and commenting.

Would be pretty damn sad if someone vandalized it. Is the only way I can think of for that much water to get into the engine. Even with the exhaust deflector pointed up, would take a helluva lot of rain to get that much water into it. Such a scenario is beyond unlikely with the way it was covered during transport.

Hiya Del! Our thoughts are that the engine missed a final check on the production line. Which I truly understand happens. Human errors. Our biggest issue is that they don't find this to be an issue. And the wait times could be explained if they had been the first to reach out instead of Francis reaching out many times to just be lead along. There are a few USA made upright splitters. Garland Fabrications is one we recently saw. It is less than an Eastonmade and less of a wait time. I can't say how it is on durability. I haven't seen one in person. There are a lot of things we still like about the Axis. What is making us really skeptical is how long the engine will last. 🍻🍻 As always, have a great weekend. ❤️ ya

That's the same as our Briggs & Stratton engine on our wood splitter (not Eastonmade). It’s the engine. The roads also have to be dry when you tow it or you’ll get water in the engine and hydraulic fluid. Hydraulic fluid isn’t cheap either.

Hello just watched your video and even though it was done seven months ago you have aon your hands. I’ve been a mechanic for over 30 years and the only way water can get into an air cooled engine is from the air filter, box or the muffler. The only scenario I can put together is after Easton made ran their checks for hydraulic function and operation and then they set it aside for the shipping company to pick it up. During that time it must’ve rained in the water got into the engine through probably the muffler has the air filter has a cover on it, and once the shipping company. picked it up and delivered it to you. This is a Easton made warranty issue and not a Briggs & Stratton warranty issue. The salesman telling you you have a three-year warranty is a bunch of hogwash. His name is not on the dotted line and he will not be around in three years when you start having engine compression problems do too the piston rings prematurely failing in loss of compression and power. I am not a big fan of Briggs & Stratton engines as a rattle too much. I have seen some access machines using the Honda engines which are much quieter And smoother. But that is a personal opinion of mine. You have to work with what you have. Good luck.

I would be royally pissed! But not at anyone just yet. Thumbs down to anyone that says just run it like that, I'm pretty sure those same people would be just as horrified as you. You pay that much for anything and receive it in that condition, expectations are any reputable company will make it right, no matter the cost. With what has been on Andrew's mind of late, (family crisis) whats going on in the business, hasn't been on the forefront, but I think Henry is cautiously moving forward (i hope) and researching where the ball dropped before he can commit to which way to go.. Knee jerk reaction from any company is to do root cause analysis before commiting to resolution. I suspect this level of support has to go to the top (Andrew). As having had experience in the service industry, I'm sure that is the direction being taken at this point.. It's too early to point fingers or assume whats wrong will not be corrected .... but based on posting from almost every Eastonmade user, I don't think you have to worry, but if not, this could jeopardize any good good standing Andrew has strived to achieve.. I sincerely hope Andrew resolves this publicly on your channel and his...and uses your experience as an example of the commitment Eastonmade is known for. Saying best of luck is hollow from a complete stranger, but I have faith in the commitment Andrew has for his customers!

I just learned tonight after watching Andrew's video ( I still watch eastonmade videos because I find it interesting on what they are doing and how they do things) that he has had a family medical situation. I hope his wife is doing good and hope she makes a speedy recovery. The issue I have is not life threating and can be resolved in time one way or another. The least Henri could do is communicate if, in fact, they are looking into it or not. There has been no communication since he denied damage to the engine, and stated it didn't need to be replaced last week, even after I sent the video to him.

Talk to a guy in your area that works on small engines and get his opinion but I am sure it will be fine I have done all my own mechanical work my whole life and it was not run with the water thats good I would like to know how the water got in the engine. I had a 12 HP power lock up on me do to lack of oil my fault it took me a big pipe wrench to get it to turn again put the oil back in and it run fine for the life of the rider and was still running when I sold it for 50 bucks the mowing deck had rusted out that is tough good luck and make more videos love seeing you 2 working together

Thanks for watching Mike,. Your channel was the one that made me decide on ordering the axis in the first place. I agree, I do believe they make an excellent machine and are very, very dependable machines. The only problem is, this Machine will not be. Besides the 16 plus months to wait to receive it, now we have a machine that is comprimised. I just wish they would have taken responsibility for it and not brushed it off onto an engine manufacturing issue in the future. Thank you for watching and your comment in support of our dilemma. 🙂

Eastonmade SHOULD replace the engine... period. They can afford it. Water got in there from either air filter, or intake or through muffler, exhaust side if either sides valve was open, water would go in... Number of issues there, hydrolock, rod, piston or valve damage... Just say no damage like that, and you want to use the machine... have enough oil on hand to change oil two times after short runs. Get some Marvel Mystery Oil, pull spark plug, pour a small amount in cylinder and spin engine with plug out. Put plug back, fill with clean oil and add a little MMO to oil and run engine. See if it sounds ok. Chances are, if no hydrolock damage, it will probably be ok. Not saying it is right, but you can use machine if Eastonmade wimps out and does not do the right thing. Good luck.

Hi Dale thanks for watching. I would agree with you 100% but the issue was the water coming out was rusty. Rusty water means the cast iron cylinder and rings were rusted and the water was in the engine for a while, long enough to cause internal rusting.

Sounds like bad gas was put in it. It could have started and ran when gas was mixed but after settling the water would have seperated then rested on the bottom of tank and got sucked into the cylinder.

Thanks for watching Buckin. The water didn't enter through the sparkplug or airbox because both were tight and airbox was dry with no water spots. The only point of entry I can think of is the exhaust also, but the exhaust tip is pointed down.

Sorry, but if B&S sold Easton on their engine being reliable for, Outdoor, Equipment, they are 100% responsible - there was natural Water intrusion.(i.e. Rain or melting snow) Easton did NOT Modify the engine itself in the manufacture of the Splitter and simply Bolted it in place in the assembly process. *Now, if the Splitter was to get submerged or be sabotaged by some disgruntled individual, then neither company is responsible and perhaps - Insurance - would cover any damages.

Thanks for watching and commenting Dan. Brittany and I made the video so others would know what to expect and how long it might take. We never imagined that it would be damaged, but hopefully, the engine will last. I've had others comment saying the engine does not sound like it's running right. I am not a mechanic, so I can't say one way or the other. As for now, Brittany really likes the machine a lot and thinks it does a great job splitting. I think Eastonmade could use some improvement on keeping customers informed throughout the process by reaching out to the customer periodically and letting them know wait times for the machines they ordered.As far as the life of the engine only time will tell.

I had so many issues with my Axis I would not buy one I'm actually have mine for sale. They had to ship a new Hydraulic tank, lift cylinder, outrigger leg. The machine is just not a safe machine in my opinion as well as many other professional people who have run it. Look at the videos about wood being pushed apart instead of split because Andrew doesn't believe in having a sharp wedge. The Hand cranking of that very heavy conveyor with a boat winch that came with no instruction of use. Several times the thing came crashing down. The overall apperance looked like it had been sitting outside for years. The hydraulic tank was overfull of oil and blew out of the cap all over me and the ground. The paint peeled off the Hyd. tank and so Andre sent a new tank. The pump is not big enough to run the splitter and conveyor at the same time. The conveyor always stops. The fact that you have to use a ratchet strap or something to install the pin onto the lift cylinder is crazy and the tray is super heavy. The cylinder will not hold up the wood when it is in the tray. So they sent me another cylinder. The tray comes up and down at random speeds that most the time the wood ends up on the ground. The other thing is now the wedge sticks in the down mode and well it's dangerous if your not paying attention. I also told them that the wedge should be a different color so you don't get used to it and if your not paying attention where your hands are because it just all looks the same. I went round and round with Henri and Andrew and well They need to go back to the drawing board with this machine. All The operation controls should be from the operators side. I hate having to walk around the machine to shut it off and make the conveyor work . I put a electric winch on to raise and lower the conveyor and the tray. You would think Andrew could of thought about this stuff. I've had mine now for awhile and well Wolfe ridge just came out with a machine that looks like they have addressed all the issues I've talked about and then some .I really wanted this machine so I could go do portable jobs. I hope this helps anyone thinking about an Axis. I would look at a different machine. I also own a powers split. It runs circles around the Axis. I'm a women whos been doing firewood for over 25 years and also own a Blockbuster 12-20. I know what I'm talking about with machines. I really don't like running this Axis. If someone really wants one contact me. I'm in California. Thanks for reading this I just felt that someone who makes a living with different firewood machines and the Axis should give an honest opinion. Your welcome to call me direct. 707-498-1122

Hi W Ridgewood, with water sitting in the engine for an unknown amount of time, and it rusting, we have concerns over micro pitting. Our bigger concern is that the engine will fail before its life expectancy. It may fail before the 3 yr warranty. Our Briggs and Straton dealer said the engine is most likely compromised. We are delivering it to them on Monday to have the engine fully inspected. In our research time, we found that Eastonmade had great customer service. The machines were top knotch. We tested two different machines from other customers in our area. They had only great things to say about Eastonmade as well. However, this video was documenting our specific situation. Thanks for your feedback. We hope you have a great weekend!
