Neil was The Man. Saw them live many times, and have seen this video hundreds of times. I still just sit here watching with my mouth hanging open in awe. Miss him.

He was a humble man who loved with all of his heart. He also could keep a different beat with each of his limbs.

Good...Oz! Not too many people know that about Neil Peart. I heard him mention it in an interview (not sure exactly how he described it) but essentially he got so good at drums that he could do like "fills" etc to where he had different timing with every limb...purposefully, almost sounded like he was off time/out of time...tempo. Everybody who reads this can hear some of it at about the 7:30 mark here. !!!! Genius!

"Ladies and gentlemen, the Professor on the drum kit"!

Shoot. You may have seen this comment from me B4. But I wanted to make shue you saw the in the right palce.: As an amateur drummer, I want to say thanks for your “Shout out to all the drummers” But, we really don’t want the recognition, we (I) just want it to sound good. And Niel “WORKED”. He worked on every drum hit he did. He said this in a few interviews that he always just wanted to be the best he could be. Even in the R40 tour (40 years since the band was established), Neil said “time” was an enemy. But an enemy he would not let get the best of him. His body was going through the natural phase of aging. But that just made Niel work harder. We should all strive to be like Niel. Whether it’s drumming or processing packages at a package processing plant. Dot the best and strive for more. That’s what made Niel the professor of his craft. I can’t tell you how the passing of Niel has affected me, But I think if Niel and I had this conversation he would say “Just relax and do what you do your best… And always strive to better what you do”. Don’t get lazy and say you have already reached your best. Because your best has yet to come. No Matter what your age. Niel knew this. He is a model for us all. Look at his writings of Rush’s songs. Mostly just “Happy”, but always with a message.

I hope they paid their drum tech (or techs!) well cuz that set is insane! Setting that up and keeping it in perfect condition thru a whole tour must be crazy!

For more of Neil's best drum work, I recommend The Trees from Exit Stage Left. Cheers from Toronto! 🥁 🥁 🐐 🐐

This is a huge blessing man who in his prime of fame and Fortune, was humble enough to seek out two Drum teachers and take lessons with them as if he was a beginner 12 year old , Neil lost his daughter to a car accident and shortly after his wife passed from Cancer , He took time off from the band and just Rode his motorcycle all around The USA and Canada to reflect by him self

See these guys didn’t have social media, and their fans were not only dedicated, loyal to the band but also very protective at the concerts in Ontario Canada

At the end, Niel actually caught the drum stick the wrong way (With the but end out) But he immediately noticed this, flipped it around with his fingers on one hand and, even after this, he left himself with plenty of time for that next “hit” on the drums. This is why he is called the professor. He didn’t even panic. He just knew how to get the job done and he did it. Effortlessly.

to Give you a little music lesson, before you were born there was a Musical Era called the BIG BANDs Era that your parent may have told you about- in that Era were musicians like Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis jr, Dean Martin and many others, but within this ERA that was an inspiration to Neil was a Drummer called Buddy Rich who played with these Entertainers at times....you can watch him on this Platform as well. there was many other drummers at this era not so well known as Buddy Rich, but a guy called Gene Krupa one of Neil Drum teachers who taught him some of the music you just heard at the end of this solo, but having said that. Neil also traveled the world learning different sounds from many places and introduced them into his playing..as the band progressed over the years, these musicians were inspiration to Neil as he introduced his different sounds of playing to the band and the world.......Neil was inspiration to other famous drummers and other musician in groups as he was an inspiration to RUSH's FANS

Big sections of this solo he's doing that boom-chick-chick thing steadily with his feet while he's doing entirely different things with his hands. I can hardly walk and chew gum at the same time 😂

It’s not as much about Niel’s speed and timing as it is about his creativity. Look at how Niel brought the “drum solo” to the audience. With the pounding bass drum at the beginning to the melodic xylophone to the horns he triggered at the end. His creativity in the songs he plays with Rush is like no other I have ever heard or will hear again. Whether he's the GOAT of drumming or not, that all just depends on your taste. It’s all subjective and I’m ok if he’s not considered “the best”. I just know what his drumming does to my sole. The seamlessly smooth transition to the next phrase of the song it largely (But not solely) Niel!

On the Drummer World home page there's an article 15 Greatest Drummers of All Time. It names Ringo Starr, John Bonham, the Indian percussionist Trilok Gurtu, and the remaining 12 are all jazz drummers. Just so you know.

Watch John Bonham’s long version solo, & his in my opinion is the greatest, & with a kit 1/4 that size. Bonzo also pounds out the drums with his hands.

No doubt is one of the greatest. Do you know who emulated looked up to as a drummer. Who he called the archetype of drumming ? Go find a video on you tube .when he was younger. Not the recent which was still great.watch TOAD live by CREAM. GINGER BAKER backers solo is like 11 minutes. Long. You will see the king . no one had. AturL time.which is GINGER could move all his hands and feet at different speeds. . only VINGER can do that
